Stepmania "How To" for beginners

A quick “how to” for Stepmania

8=up key
4=left key
2=down key
6=right key

INDEXES

Crossovers (6,2,4,2,6)
Doing crossovers on indexes is a bitch. To do a 6,2,4,2,6 crossover, you would want your left index on 6 and your right index on 2. Press 4 with your right index, press 2 with your left index while moving your right index to hit 4. Then hit 2 again with your left index while moving your right index towards 6.
Helpful Stepfiles- The crossovers on eggmans quasar, apersons omega on oni, rhythm and police (official)
Butterfly Combo (6,8,2,4)

For this you want to hit 6 with your left index,8 with your right, 2 with your left and 4 with your right.
Helpful stepfiles-Butterfly official (heavy), eggman quasar

Trouble with reading 16th streams.
I used to have a lot of trouble with 16th streams. I didn't know what a speed mod was either. To access speed mods, hit start after you choose a song. Speed mods make a world of difference.

Good simfiles for beginners-
Max Series (officials)
So Deep (perfect sphere mix), (official, good for gallops)
Stalled Out And Sushi Bars (On FFR, dance category)

Good simfiles for overall practice-
One more lovely (eggman),
Stratosphere (fortress?) (skor?),
dignity (moogy),
Reality (reach) you want to build using rate mods
Quasar (eggman)

Some of these might seem difficult at first, practice them! Quasar is a good start to learn how to do long 16th streams. Foir reality, start on around 0.7 rate and build from there. Rate modifiers are on the second page of options.

NOTE-Playing on the number pad is difficult. Most people play on the regular arrow keys.

Please help add stuff! One handed section would be greatly appreciated. I also need to know some good songs for beginners, link would be nice to.

EDIT-Fixed some stuff, added some stuff
EDIT2-Added some stuff. changed some stuff

RE: Stepmania "How To"

I would change the 1, 2, 3, 4 to 2, 4, 6, 8 so it's easier to understand.

OMEGA is just crossovers starting at either Up or Down, nothing different than the crossovers starting at Left or Right.

This sounds like it could be very helpful. I myself am trying to improve my Stepmania skills. Most of the friends I have hate DDR so I can't get any help. Can't wait for this to be completed. Keep up the good work. It's already helping me.

I would change them to coorespond with the numpad:

8 = up
4 = left
6 = right
2 = down

I'm no noob to stepmania (I play spread set up with the numpad and the arrows) but I've wondered how to do: 2 3 4 1 with indexes. Four fingers takes the complication out of many things i suppose.

Edit: And you don't think that One More Lovely is a bit fast for beginners? Unless of course I'm thinking on a different level of "beginner".

Moogy made dignity.

NVLM made one too.

I'll have to try out the number pad. I use the regular arrow keys which works pretty well for me cause I have short, stubby fingers.

Guys, FF7 Battle (in the FFR Arcade section) is pretty good too, with its jumps, crossovers and gallops, all in the same song. I disagree with the 486(46) sections, though.

Um, shouldn't you add a section on 4 fingers, or is that coming?

Um, personally, I think someone else should do this.
