I tried the radioshack adapter, and it has the same problem that most adapters do; it won't register up+down or left+right. You'll need to find the right adapter that can register all of the arrows.

That's because you have it on Axis Mode, not Button Mode. I had the same problem, so I changed it to Button Mode in the configuration settings, and now mine works perfectly fine.

I checked in the settings for the "USB joystick," and I didn't see it there.
