How do I download StepMania on Linux?

My computer runs Linux and I want to get StepMania. Problem is, I've always has some form of windows in my entire life and I have no clue what I'm doing. Can anybody help me out?

I'm actually on Windows too and haven't tried SM on Linux, but I just Googled it now and it doesn't look too bad (assuming the steps work).

First, it seems like you'll have to build from source.
You can either get the release tar here: http://www.stepmania.com/download/
Or you could clone the latest version from git.

Next, you could follow the instructions on their wiki to compile. (This link also includes git repo location).

...oh lol, or there's always Wine?? It provides a Windows compatibility layer for running Windows apps in Linux, but not sure how the performance would be for a game like SM, where timing is critical.

This is why I never understood why people use Linux. Even downloading a simple game like StepMania is complicated. Oh well, I'm trying out Wine right now. Will update progress soon.
EDIT: Now it's all downloaded and installed, but I have no fucking clue how to open it.

There's no desktop shortcut? Try looking for the executable in that folder (+ subdirs) or Program Files (should be under the wine c drive, which looks like c: from your ss).

Ps. Linux has its uses, okayy ;p Also I'm surprised there aren't more Linux gamers here who have something to say about Wine/SM xD guess you get to be surprised!

I can't find a shortcut. I re-installed it to create a shortcut, however it doesn't actually open anything. Just sits there and loads for ~15 seconds and then nothing.

Hmm try running it directly from the executable instead of the shortcut? If that doesn't work, check for log files somewhere (wish I could be more specific but this is guesswork unfortunately).

If that still doesn't work, try just downloading the tar file from the sm downloads page. It might actually have an executable in there that you can run I had assumed it would be source that you have to compile, but maybe not.

Edit: yes try that ^ and run ./stepmania

The problem I'm having here is that there's this file labeled as "stepmania.exe" in the programs folder. Trying to open it results in nothing happening. I would just download the source, however I have 0 idea of what I would need to do/have to be able to set up that version of StepMania.

I apologize for not knowing much but I have only ever used Windows XP and Windows 7 for basically my entire life.

No worries, Linux does have a bit of a learning curve it's important to just keep poking around and figuring things out ^^ btw don't be afraid to Google and look up whatever you need!

Also what architecture are you using ($arch)?

Also hmm okay I have a few ideas on where to go from here, but it probably involves more questions haha. I noticed you use Skype though, can we talk there instead?

Don't have skype on this computer. I do have it on my phone, but I have to keep the notifications off because they kill my phone battery.
I have 0 idea what my architecture is. I'm not big into computers, so my computer knowledge is very limited.

Props to Ilyair for lending a hand here. I wish I knew anything about any of this, haha. Looking to get my feet wet as well sometime, but I think I've been saying that for a few years now.

I tried that forum thread that Danceguy posted, didn't really help. However, I was able to download OpenITG and that is running smoothly so far. Thank you though to all of you that helped me out.
