    Stepping Time

How long does it take you to step a song on average?
Tell me the longest and shortest time you've stepped stuff in, and the amount of time a, say 3 min song would take
I feel like im taking too long over thinking my steps :L

    Re: Stepping Time

shortest time I've stepped a song was 5 minutes using CTRL+R and the longest time taken is probably around 12-16 hours.

If you think you're taking too long making steps, lay out the basic beat of the music using notes, and then change them around that way, layering it.

Although, more people take less or more time than others.

      Re: Stepping Time

The time totally depends over the length of the song and the simplicity of the music (a standard eurobeat music will certainly be five times as fast to step than a dream theater song for instance). Throwing around the shortest and longest time spent on stepping a file really doesn't make much sense if you want to wrap your mind around what's "correct" or "normal".

There really isn't anything bad over spending a lot of time on a simfile. It's something that asks for carefulness and afterthought. I'd say spending 15 minutes over a simfile will certainly make it bad and superficial, so you really shouldn't take the "shortest time spent" in account. You have to think about it being properly synced, it has to also be fun to tap, it has to ~feel~ right to play when you're in the player's shoes.

If you want an average though, I'd say two to four hours isn't an overstatement for a music with ~regular complexity~ (no bpm change, not overly simple, but doesn't involve a too prominent use of 0.5x rate either, and doesn't require to use 64th and 48th), that is around 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The time can easily increase depending on your conditions, any reason that can cross your mind is certainly a valid one.

You shouldn't fear to spend a lot of time on a file, what matters is that it's good, not that you rounded it off in less than an hour

anything thats not dynamic (and less than 2 minutes), can be stepped in 15 minutes or so

add more time if you want a better quality simfile

            Re: Stepping Time

Mine usually take longer because I only chart when I feel like it. I rarely can sit down and do a whole chart in one session. Especially when most of what I chart is 3+ minutes. So anywhere from like 13 minutes or so would be my shortest and like 3 months time frame would be the longest I think? So probably on average would be like 2 weeks at least?

But if we're going off strictly time spent in the editor, probably about 4-5 hours or so? I tend to sit here and just watch the file on auto play a lot as I go. It weeds out a lot of the errors I do make (certainly not all of them though.)

Damn how can you resist the urge to test the sync and see how it feels by putting AutoPlay on

Shortest file I've made took me 10 seconds (You Suffer lol)
Longest? Some of my files I'd work on occasionally here and there, say 4 hours every month for several years (Bolt Thrower, Rave7, etc)

It really all depends on what your goal with the file is, you know, how high quality you are going to hold yourself to. And of course what type of music it is.

For your average static BPM 3 minute long song, I'd usually get it done in an hour or two unless there were some crazy difficult solos to sync.

For 3 min? Usually takes me a week to two months.

                  Yeah, I take forever.

                    Re: Stepping Time

Ultrabeatdown Supreme an 18 minute file with 15,000 arrows took me 2 and a half weeks to step in about 10-15 stepping sessions (about once a day) each lasting about an hour long. So in total like somewhere between 15-20 hours.

And then there's Everytime I Hear Your Name a file with 1464 arrows in 1min 45sec took me 20 minutes to step (this is the fastest I've ever made a file btw)

On average I want to say I step about 1000 arrows an hour.
And my average nps is 1000 per minute so 1 hour per minute

And normally I spend about 3 to 5 hours on a file (so a lot of my files have 3000-5000 arrows in them)

                      Re: Stepping Time

The longest I spent stepping something was about 150 hours, followed by 100, both over several months.
2-3 minute static tracks tend to take 1-5 hours to initially step, although I usually like to revisit them at least twice and spend several more hours making sure everything is as good as I can make it.

Shortest time was 30 minutes for a 2 minute song

Longest was 13ish hours for a 7 minute song

                        I average about 2 hours a minute
