    LH/RH BPM-difference

    BPM difference is this metric I've been using to figure out how far behind my left hand is from my right hand in terms of 16ths.

    On index, my left hand is only 10bpm behind my right hand.

    On 6key (3 fingers) my left hand is 25bpm behind my right hand.

    I don't know what it is for 4 fingers one-handed, but my left hand would be substantially behind. Perhaps up to 40BPM.

    What I've been wondering is how many BPM increments you should consider substantial. 20? 30? This BPM difference lessens as you get better, too. My 6key difference used to be much greater.

    I don't quite understand how this makes sense. If you alternate between left and right every note then wouldn't they be the same? And even if they weren't, every few notes you would readjust your timing if you got off.

      It's about jacks or trills between one hand. My left hand's jacks are 15 BPM behind my right and trills are about 30.

        My left hand is behind my right hand by 60bpm. The gap use to be wider though at 90bpm

          Left hand is slower by around 35-40 BPM. I've had days where my left middle finger locks up and it causes me to miss lots of left arrows. About 80% of misses that ruin my good runs are the left arrow - sometimes my BPM difference is as great as 55-60.

            This is true in a general sense, but think about it this way: for double-steps (or whatever you want to call patterns that are like [Left+Right --> Up]) you have a choice between using your dominant hand and non-dominant hand for these kinds of patterns, since if you have your left hand on L and your right hand on R, you could either move your right hand up or your left hand up. In situations like these, you're not likely to use your non-dominant hand unless it provides you with some significant advantage over using your dominant hand -- like in the pattern [Up+Right --> Left] with your right hand on R and your left on U. Since situations like these are more uncommon than not, you'll end up using your dominant hand for a lot of double-step patterns. And since advanced index files (namely, files that are designed for spread players but we play anyway) have a lot of double steps, playing those will probably make your dominant hand faster by a slight amount.

                For vibrating I remember I used to be able to live through 210 bpm and combo 170 bpm on my right hand and barely even pass 160 bpm using my left.
                I passed jackhammer madness 1-handed aside from the trills.

                  I'm probably like 20 bpm difference (or less) when it comes to jacking. Not because I'm good at it with my left hand, but because I'm terrible at it with my right.

                    How does one accurately measure such a thing? Best I can think of is repeated trial and error with various known BPMs.

                      If we talk about sustaining at a certain speed then I would define that as a pattern lasting longer than 16 notes.

                      Left hand sustained trill speed ->220 (abnormally low for someone like me imo)
                      Right hand sustained trill speed -> 265ish
                      Difference - 45bpm

                      Left hand sustained wrist-jack speed -> 155*
                      Right hand sustained wrist-jack speed -> 165*
                      Difference - 10bpm

                      Left hand sustained vibrate speed -> 210
                      Right hand sustained vibrate speed -> 200
                      Difference - 10bpm

                      No idea why the left hand can vibrate better but it must have to do with positioning? I really don't know...either way the differences make sense except I think I have an abnormally slow left hand trill-wise.

                      *short duration (2-8 notes) can go much higher obviously.

                        Re: LH/RH BPM-difference

                        interesting. my RH vibrate speed is identical to yours, but LH is much lower and trill speed is substantially lower on both hands. Trill speed is about 177 for my left hand and 220 for my right.

                        It seems like a great part of getting better at this game is not only increasing your overall speed, but closing the gap between your dominant and nondominant hand. Which is to say, you might be able to improve more frequently by playing songs that primarily drain your nondominant hand, as opposed to songs that place equal emphasis on both or emphasis on the dominant hand. This would mean lower scores and you'd perceive yourself as sucking, but your overall skill would be going up faster.

                          I'm not gonna get into BPM, but my left hand is ridiculously slower than my right.

                            In terms of 16ths and comboing ability:

                            On trills, my left hand is ~20-30 BPM faster than my right hand, and my left hand trills at 190-200. I can wrist-jack at ~155 BPM on my right hand, and ~10-20 BPM lower on my left hand. It has been a while since I have actually measured, but that's what I estimate.
