    Re: Simfile Database

I would like a new simfile database. If this ever gets made, you should make it so we can select our favorite artists and we get a notification to our email or something whenever they upload a new file

I just need a secure place to backup my files since media fire send space etc aren't very secure unless you pay for the premium account

        Re: Simfile Database

Creating a simfile database is a great start, just don't create a whole damn new community to go along with it as that will unnecessarily add onto the whole separation problem in SM where each community isolates themselves from the others. I've expressed countless times about how difficult it is to find an exact starting place for SM as there's so many different communities to choose from as opposed to the single, one place that has everything (re: other games).

If you guys need someone to do the coding shit, I'm more than able to. I just need details, and probably someone to do the graphical part of it. I'm not artsy at all lol, I just know how to code.

            Re: Simfile Database

There's no real intent on making another community for the sake of separating (hence the reason why guests of the forum can upload files as well); it's there just to host files for people to enjoy.

EDIT: p.s. read Kayla's post, we have a simfile storage/database on our forums as a temporary solution, and IF you decide that you want an account, you can have account based storage

we at least ask that you tag your name properly, lol

              Re: Simfile Database

I like this idea. I've always preferred downloading singles as opposed to packs, but at the moment there is no good place to do that. It would be important to figure out right away whether files would be hosted on the site itself (opening yourself up to more legal responsibility, as well as higher cost) or on mediafire/another file host (running the risk of hosting a bunch of dead links).

If it were me, I would hold off until we see what Bemanistyle's redone file database looks like. I'm fairly certain that they lost everything and aren't going to be restoring the old DB. Instead, they're using this opportunity to improve the system. However, they don't seem to consider it a high priority, as it's been 4 months since they got back up.

I would be willing to help out with code or design. I've got a mini-DB for my own files at http://charlo.gamemakersgarage.com/stepmania/ which I coded myself. It's searchable and has a tagging system for genres (http://charlo.gamemakersgarage.com/stepmania/genres.php).

                Re: Simfile Database

If I was considering doing this as a new community, I would have done it with Red Fraction. This would ONLY be a website that has the database on it.

The first issue is what to call the place? What would the domain name be called?

Stepmaniaonline.com isn't being used right now. But we all know what that is and used to be. Still, it could be a good idea. It is a general stepmania name that could imply anything is there, which could work for a simfile database

simfiledb.com is an idea that I'm suggesting, since it tells you right in the URL what it is.

                    Re: Simfile Database

Big support here. I don't download packs because I'm low on bandwidth and am often more interested in only one song instead of all of them. This would fix this issue. It would also help new users get opinions about their file in a more direct way, like it used to be (granted you add that feature in there).

                      Re: Simfile Database

+1 to simfiledb.com it's straight to the point.

But before we make jumps to domain names and such, we should probably figure out who's doing what. From what I know, Charlo is more experienced with database coding than I am. We should figure out what host we want. Transfer caps/bandwidth is the thing we would probably be worried about, but they're some good hosts out there for cheap.

We should also figure out how we want to design the database. There's some suggestions to some interesting features that users would like.

if it's going to be an entire website it'd be cool to have featured simfiles/simfile artists (up-and-coming folks not people everyone already knows obv)

lol if it were mega-gay it would be like "pick a genre and then a sub-genre"
                            just make them somewhat general

B-b-but how am I going to tell the post-avant jazzcore files from the progressive dreamfunk files?

I think a good system would be to pre-populate the database with genres, then if people really think that their file doesn't fit into an existing genre or would fit better with a different genre, they can submit it for addition to the site.
