Sudden process problem for Stepmania 3.9

- Stepmania comes up twice in the Applications list
- Mem Usage when I try to start it up again becomes 72k, nothing happens and it's not listed in the Applications on task manager but it's listed as a process and it prevents me from even shutting down my ****ing computer because it is literally impossible to stop even if I do shut down
- I have tried uninstalling and even deleting the folder but the same thing happened after reinstalling
- This just started happening today

Edit: Oh hey it's happening for Stepmania 5 too



So basically in short I can't even open up stepmania without it crashing, and when I try starting it up again, it stays as a permanent process that can't be stopped and it is literally impossible for me to shut down my laptop (I have to hold down the power button to shut it down).

Are the same songs installed on both versions? If not, how many songs are shared between versions?

Is your "GlobalOffsetSeconds" in your stepmania.ini set to 0.000?

There are currently no songs in my stepmania folders -- I moved them to another directory just to see if I could load up the game. There are no shared songs.

Did you do anything over the last couple of days on your computer that might have done this? (such as install a new program, download an update, etc.)

What I did do was download an update for ZoneAlarm... before that stepmania wasn't doing this.

I don't see how a Zonealarm update would suddenly make Stepmania an unstoppable process that doesn't even work though

Updates can do mysterious things, for example one time i installed a windows update, and then several programs such as word, excel would not open or function correctly at all.

Try uninstalling the update then see what happens.

okay good you answered my next question, so I can ask another:
does the game write out log.txt files during this time? and if so, could you post both the 3.9 and sm5 log.txt files somewhere?

(in my years of using StepMania I have not run into this :s)

also that's really weird about zonealarm.
