Re: Which music game is the best?

I've only recently tried Technika, but it's ridiculously addicting. Definitely the kind of game that will put a hole in your wallet quickly.

As far as the best music game, I can't really choose for "best" because they all are rhythm games in their own way. As for my personal favorites, I will have to say PIU first, then ITG second. Despite the customization, the people who chart aggressively seem to want to chart things the same way - i.e. no crossovers/no mines and it just promotes a single way of being good.

    My thoughts, though.

      There is no best.

I do enjoy the following though, or used to (in no particular order):

      O2Jam
      BMS KB
      IIDX CS
      DJMax Trilogy
DJMax PSP (all of it, cept' haven't tried P3)
      Pop'n Music
      Pop'n PSP
      RockFever
      FeelTheBeats
      FFR
      Ez2dj
      ...stepmania
      PiU
      DDR (X, with edits)

Games which I rarely get the chance to play, or when I'm visiting other countries
      DJMax Technika
      IIDX AC
      ITG (well, a hacked cabinet)
Drummania (I'd play this more if there was a functioning cab)

      Games which I don't play
      Jubeat
      Taiko no Tatsujin
      Guitarfreakz
      OSU

I apologize in advance for the tangential post here.

As a person who keeps abreast of current ITG simfile releases, I gotta say that's not true at all. On what are you basing that inaccurate generalization? The only popular simfile author I can think of who might fit that description is Mad Matt; he's notorious for despising crossovers.

Take the following three currently popular ITG step artists: zimlord, Mad Matt, and MWok. Their styles are all completely different. Now take me, as a player: I like most of zimlord's charts, maybe half of Mad Matt's charts, and almost none of MWok's charts. Several friends of mine like all three pretty equally. zimlord himself hates Mad Matt's charts and likes a fair amount of MWok's work. There's really no rhyme or reason to it; there's a lot of variety out there, and people like what they like. There is no one chart style that is inherently most popular these days.

DDR because I can play it. IIDX has the best music.

Re: Which music game is the best?

pump because of the current continuous development of the game and the fact that people are still playing it. Their music has stayed relatively the same which is good for consistency, contrarily to DDR which has strayed away from its original jpop/beatmania/etc. song choices and now plays generic shit that's basically unplayable. That and Pump nightmare charts are so easily accessible compared to any other rhythm game it's awesome and the focus on the charts becomes more important because people will actually bother to play them. Pump also challenges the player to do stuff that's traditionally not done on dance games (granted, there's still a lot of bullshit charts, take a look at handom character that pass CZ). It really lets the player explore different ways to hit certain patterns/crossovers/quads and such, which I find helps keep the monotony away.

Only problem with ITG is that for some people custom songs are still inaccessible and they don't see the opportunity to add new material whereas Pump and DDR constantly release new official material and features. Don't get me wrong, custom songs from r21freak and such are still really chill to play, but it just feels like another stepmania pack with nothing really added to the gameplay.

Personally I like pop'n best as a non-dancing rhythm game but that's because it's still relatively new to me and I've only played it twice

Re: Which music game is the best?

It seems like Guitar Hero isnt getting any bread ITT. And thats not cool, because that is a rhythm game, too.

Ah, the hell with it. Activision isn't producing any more GH games anyway. GH5 (or was it GHWOW...?) was their last one. Makes me sad, because I have been playing GH since it came out. And now its going to be discontinued... It's a damn shame! There are so many songs that I wanted to see a GH file for.

Rockband, silly. Harmonix made GH 1 and 2, then moved on to RB, letting activision screw up GH. They are now on RB3, and there are more downloadable songs then you count. Its also just an all around better game.

Speaking of Harmonix, this thread needs more appreciation for Frequency/Amplitude. Those games are freaking amazing.

Now all thats left is Rock Band. FUCC Rock Band...

EDIT: Well, apparently the problem was making songs for the GH game. Shit, if that was really the problem, a project should be executed for a GH alternative, like Roxor Games did ITG. Im sure RedOctane would help.... OH WAIT. ACTIVISION OWNS THEM. Guess thats not happening.

I find it funny how GH is still referred to as that because after the 5th installment (World Tour or something like that), it has been about more than guitars.

Rock Band had the right idea pretty much from the start, completely killing the GH series... it's about time.
So I've returned. Maybe I can stick around for awhile.

there really shouldn't be an "objectively" best game.

I happen to agree with those who are saying the rock band games are superior, but more importantly, harmonix didn't pump out sequel after sequel to cash in on the brief rhythm game craze. activision deserves the worst.

audiosurf is really neat, I think. you can play any song you'd like without someone having to labor over making a particular notechart or whatever for it. sure, the generated levels aren't incredibly accurate or intricate, but the game's accessible nature makes it SO worth the measly price tag. just picked up a new cd from your favorite artist? boom, you can play through the whole thing immediately. there are also some alternatives that serve the same purpose really, beat hazard being one. audiosurf is just my personal favorite.
