Tons of people have probably realized this, often you find people won't play you because when in MP, people sometimes know your skill, often toward the top players. For example, I wouldn't never willingly play laggy in mp just to lose a bunch of levels 
My suggestion is to somehow implement something like this:
Add a section to MP that has area to join games, that are set up with difficulty to difficulty, such as you can join a player looking to play a song from difficulty 9 to 12 in MP, without knowing who or what song you'll be playing. After the one song is complete, both players can choose to play another random song within the original difficulty limit of the room, or head back to the lobby to find another game.
Once you join a game, you will still have no clue who you are playing, show the song title at the bottom when it is randomly picked.
Of course, I didn't want to think too hard about all the things that could be done with this and additions to it and such, being no matter how hard I try to think, someone will always suggest something awesome similar to the original.
Edit: dunno why I didn't think of this 2 seconds ago before I posted, but instead of automatically having your name hidden, on the search page, have a check box to hide your username if you want.
