The sync on FFR is on-beat for the most part but becomes more of a nuanced issue when you're dealing with faster arrow patterns that can easily turn your "perfects" into "goods" when the syncing is off. In fact, for some songs (such as Strangeprogram) I've found myself actually muting the volume when I try for a higher score. To fix this, I think the best solution would be an autosync modeled after the AutoSync in Stepmania that aligns the song's arrows to a certain gap based on the user's input and keeps that value in your user account. I'm not sure how FFR would achieve this, however.
The reason I think the difference in sync occurs is during the conversion process--chart makers often sync the songs to their computer, and Stepmania syncing does vary quite a bit depending on the computer.
The second suggestion I'd like to make is re-ordering (or standardizing) difficulty. Right now there's several measures of difficulty: the 1-99 system mentioned in this thread, the )))))) system (I don't know what to call it), and the system where each difficulty has a name (such as "For Master's Only). I don't have a preference regarding either of these because difficulty ratings are arbitrary and artificial to begin with, but I think you should pick one and standardize it to make things easier.
The third suggestion I'd like to make is allowing the user to pick speed mods like in R2. Right now 1.75 is a bit too slow for me and 2.0 a bit too fast--my ideal would be somewhere around 1.88 or 1.85. I suspect other people have this same issue.
