    Ads, bugs

I don't want to type all this out, so here's a log. The suggestion is to become less greedy, the whole site seems to be about making money now, another reason why so many people are leaving. Also don't add new features until all the current problems are solved. Instead, release fixes.

(3:13:09 PM) Npgamer: I went to ffr to play a game
(3:13:27 PM) Npgamer: It was all playing slow, so I right clicked an advertisement and set the quality of the advertisement to low, and then the game didn't lag anymore
(3:13:34 PM) Npgamer: So I was playing and got to a song that the other person didn't have
(3:13:47 PM) Npgamer: And had to reload the game because you can't pick a song again until refreshing
(3:13:49 PM) Npgamer: So I did that
(3:13:56 PM) Npgamer: There were two flash advertisements and I couldn't play
(3:14:00 PM) Npgamer: So I kept refreshing to make them go away
(3:14:15 PM) Npgamer: Finally one with netflix showed up, it wasn't flash, and I set the quality of the other one to low, and was able to play
(3:14:28 PM) Npgamer: Then afterwards, I went to a profile, and all the sudden there were all these noises
(3:14:34 PM) Npgamer: It was an advertisement in the chat or something
    (3:14:46 PM) Npgamer: There's a trend here

Dude, they're not trying to make money. The ads you see help pay for server costs and site upgrades. They can't control all the adverts we see. Sometimes you just need to refresh until a non flash ad comes up. As for the video that loads before profile chat, theres nothing you can really do other than subscribe.

I just don't agree with the idea of one giant site with high costs as opposed to lots of small sites with low costs and smaller communities. The current goal is to make FFR seem like a big deal, not to house small groups of players.. But that's just greedy.

Do you want FFR to remain free to play? If so, then they have no choice.

          Re: Ads, bugs

It was free before, when the site was smaller. There's no reason everything on the site can't be split into smaller pieces, with their own cost control mechanisms.

          Edit --

Hi Tass. I see you looking at this, and realize that you're going to lock it in a few seconds because you oppose the idea and refuse to listen. That's not a surprise.

it's not something i'm going to lock. i mean, this isn't the first thread on the flash ads. we KNOW they suck. synth has commented on them sucking.

but until we can find either a) a better ad company to work with that won't show those types of ads or b) find an alternative way of generating revenue to keep the site going... then they're going to stay.

but, trust me when i tell you... synth spends a LARGE portion of his day trying to get ad deals done. they just don't get done overnight.

there is a thread within the past few days where synth listed some options that we're considering...

I can pay you 10,000 dollars once I get a job. Which will be like, in a few months. I'll wire you the money in about 7 months :P

No thanks :P you need paypal, right? well, I'm not allowed to put money on mine, or pay for a sub at all, for that matter. I could, but I'm not allowed.

                      Re: Ads, bugs

The profile chat ads are easily defeated (as are normal ads)...but I don't mind those too much when I'm using IE, in any case. They're just a mild annoyance.

The main problem with flash ads on the Game page is that 3 flash objects running at the same time is not conducive to high speeds...so the best bet is the ideas discussed in the thread mentioned by Tass.
