You know, maybe on the right hand side of the screen when you are in the middle of playing a song, it shows how many goods, avgs, etc. you have so far until the end of the song. Kind of like MP, when you play and viewers will see what your highest combo is and PA.
I like this idea more. To make it cover the idea of knowing when you want to fail, you could possibly set it so after a set number of goods/averages/boos, it will turn the font of the number bright red, so you can tell without looking at it. If that is too difficult to implement, just make it turn red at 1, so you know that you've gotten a good.
For example, you set it to 3 goods. You get a good, it turns to a white 1, you get another, it turns to a white 2, and when you get your third good, the number turns into a glaring red 3, and you can choose whether you want to continue for the fun of it, or just fail out and start over then and there.
You can put this at the bottom, instead of the score in #, because people usually don't care exactly what their score is anyway.
OR, we could just wait till they get speed mods to eliminate this problem AND the annoyance of screenshrinking at once. So basically, it's just a question of how much time it would take to implement.

Even after they have speedmods, inexperienced players may not be able to keep up with just how many goods/avg's they've had. When someone is playing only to improve their score, they might not be happy when they finish the song and see that they've done worse than before. It'd still be nice to keep a direct watch on how well you're actually doing through a song; or at least the choice of doing so.

How do we know that we got a good so that we can bail out?
You could change the color of the combo counter. One color = running AAA, another color = FC, another color = plain ol' combo. I don't think anyone screenshrinks to the point they can't see the combo number... but I'm probably wrong.

Point is, If you screencut as much as most of the real good people do You can't see if you get goods or not. You only discover at the end of the song. It would be something like stepmania's autofail if you get a miss option.
