Does anyone else find it weird that there are almost 2million members but only like 500 people actually online at one time?

I blame it partly on a large portion of the database leaving/quitting when the site went down for nearly a year.

Oh - and many people prefer Stepmania, including 4 of my friends. They'd rather play that than FFR and I'm certain many people feel the same... =[

This is very true, many people just make accounts and see that the site isn't really for them and they leave and forget all about it.

also, alt accounts and reregistrations after being banned/forgetting the last account

anyone recall what number of people were typically playing ffr every day back before the great plunge?

Not to mention that FFR was down for 10 months. A lot of people haven't returned yet.

typical number before the site went down was somwhere around 1400-1700 people online at one time roughly. Highest I ever saw was like 21xx something

There are just so many different types of users that make up that number. You just have the active members, alts, people who only come for profiles, some who just come and go, some who just sign up because they were told by a friend and only played once or twice, old members who were active at one point but died out, etc etc. The site being down also plays a big factor, but all in all, a lot of people still play FFR even if they dont have an account. That user currently online may seem low, but still a pretty decent chunk considering being down for so long. I think FFR just need a huge change to help get the site rolling again. New site layout, more active main page updates even if it isnt big news, more features, etc etc. Just have things rolling like they were back in the day when this place was booming. lol
