    Some general technical questions

    Hello all,

I'm a noob here, registered about a week ago. Forgive me if my questions have been asked and answered before.

So far I've been playing in Firefox using Flash Player 10. For hotkeys I use FGHJ.

I did some reading on the forums, and I read that it may be a better idea to use the standalone Flash Player, version 8. Most of the threads on this topic are quite old, however. This brings up my first question: Is Flash Player version 8 still the way to go?

My next question is: where do I then download the FFR file I need to run it in the standalone?

Then one question about my hotkey setup. I use FGHJ. One problem I notice is pressing FG or HJ at the same time seems hard. I read many people use setups where their hands are further away from each other (ASKL, QWOP, etc). Is there a reason for this?

And one question about the scoring system: how is the score calculated after each song? I'm guessing it's a calculation based on your perfects, goods, avarages, boots, and max combo. Does anyone have the exact scoring algorithm?
That's all for now. Thanks to anyone willing to help me

Really depends of your keyboard. There is kinda "zones" on your keyboard.

You can't press more than X in such a zone.

I'm playing ASKL because FGHJ won't work most of the time (for a "ALL-arrows" move like in Children of bottom or Death piano).

Open up a text document (Word, notepad, etc.), than try pressing F, G, H, J, K and you should see that some aren't being write.

Then try pressing A, E, C, G, L, 0 (zero), 7 and then 2 (you may need someone else help lol). As you may see, most or all of them are being written.

So the reason some people do not FGHJ or HJKL is because of those "zones".

Playing in a standalone player isn't neccesary at all if you aren't experiencing any lag in a browser. The standalone player and ffr engine files are generally frowned upon by the admins so I'm not sure how good of an idea it is to distribute it here.

I believe people choose their setups depending on what is most comfortable for them. I would try experimenting with different distances and setups to find one that doesn't strain your hands and fingers. I personally use q,s,l,p.

I'm not sure about the exact algorithm for scoring but I know perfects are +100 and goods are +50. Boo's and averages and misses I am assuming subtract points. At the end of the song it multiplies that score by your max combo to get the final score.

Edit: I don't think his question related to having trouble hitting 3-4 notes at a time. Just that it is awkward to do so with that setup.

^ but I'm pretty sure that "zones" thing is the reason why some people ASKL instead of FGHJ.

The standalone has been given out by admins I don't see why using it would be an issue. The offline engine on the other hand may be a touchy subject.

Anyways I had made a temp FAQ that's not that old. Look at the OP here for all the information on the standalone player

            Each is worth...

and your greatest combo multiplied by 1000 is added to your final score.

So a perfect score is 1550 multiplied by the number of arrows in the file.

Thanks alot for the very helpful replies! This answers all my questions!

I'm now using the stand-alone. It's a lot less 'choppy' than in Firefox / Flash 10.

Hotkeys have been set up to SDKL and I'm loving it so far.

              Thanks!
