I have always hated the layout of computer keys in relation to FFR and stepmania. It always felt very cramped and uncomfortable. Well, i found an (unofficial) solution using an X-box 360 controllers A B X and Y buttons!
What you will need:
1 WIRED X-box 360 controller (wireless is a bit more complicated)
A windows computer works best, not sure on status for mac and linux.
An open USB drive
And a bit of spare time :P
HERE WE GO!
Step 1: Not neccisarily a step, as much as a warning. Do NOT plug in your controller until I say so, or it will get a little tougher.
Step 2: Ok, since Microsoft, the people who MAKE the xbox controllers, also own windows, they make it pretty simple to get an Xbox 360 controller up and running with windows. All you have to do is go to
And fill out each part with what you have with you. Its pretty straightforward, I promise
When you fill the final question, click the "Go" button. It will give you the link for the driver you must download. Installing that is a matter of clicking OK a few times, and there you go
Step 3: Ok, you can plug in your controller now! It should say "Device detected", or something similar, and it will find and install the drivers you just downloaded. You know it worked when the upper left portion of your controller is lit up, like if it was in an actual Xbox. You could be done here, but we have a teeny problem...
Step 4: Go into FFR and try changing the keys to the xbox A B X and Y buttons. It doesnt take those as keys, so doesnt change when you press them. Since we cant teach FFR to speak controller, we will teach controller to speak FFR! You will need to download a neat little program called "Joy 2 Key". You can get it here (scroll to the bottom and click "Download"):
Step 5: Once its downloaded, go to the joy2key folder and you will see the a few files. Joy to key.exe is the program itself, and the rest of the folder is where other things are stored. If you are lazy, you can use my easy .cfg file here:
http://www.speedyshare.com/344443142.html (Please help with hosting, I'm new to this :P)
Once downloaded, drag the CFG into the joytokey folder.
Step 6: Now that you have the config, all thats left is to go into the joytokey folder, open "Joy to key.exe", and chose from the panel on the left "FFR".
Now:
A is considered a press of the down arrow
B is considered a press of the right arrow
X is left
And Y is up.
Set the default keys (Up down left and right) in ffr, and try out a song! Hope this works for everyone, and like I said, this is unofficial so dont use it with any competitions unless one of the big guys posts saying its OK.
P.S. It works the same way with stepmania! Enjoy!
