I was thinking of practicing the latter.
I play on ASKL but I only view the receptors as one four receptor bunch, not two two receptor bunches. Usually when I see a pattern appear my muscle memory automatically hits the right keys, so I view the stepfile one screenfull at a time. Just keep on playing and your body will do the work for you. (Unless you play mash files, where the only way to beat them is to smash the keyboard with a hammer multiple times.)

Even mash files have skill associated with them; less so on ffr, where you just have to be hitting faster than the notes are coming, but on sm you get combo breakers for hitting but inaccurately, so even if it's too fast to read properly, you still have to mash at the rough density the notes are coming at.

My SUPER SECRET TECHNIQUE is to take benedryl or any other drowsy allergy pills. It helps me relax (I once FCed Shind Bad because of it).

I personally prefer to be hyped up on energy drinks. I can't imagine how hard I would suck after a Benedryl.

post-dumps abstractly represent the existential nihilism that the song invokes in the listener with negative space, evoking the ephemeral nature of the mind - the journey of stepmania begins in hope yet soon becomes corroded into a dialectic of futility, leaving only a sense of dread and the unlikelihood of a new synthesis

I sometimes just find myself watching the combo go up while sub-consciously hitting all the arrows then thinking "Dear god I'm not even paying attention". Pretty much though practise you pick up on patterns and will be able to look at a wall of arrows and know instantly how to react to them.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot. I find myself thinking about that awkward moment today and why it happened while I'm FC'ing some Difficult song. x_x It's like, [i]"Whoa, I'm not even looking at the arrows, I wonder how long I can do this!"

I remember doing the same during those long Endurance Races in Gran Turismo 3.

I can FC and PA much better if I stare at the place where the "perfect!" comes up.
I screw up horribly if it is above that.
(I once turned off the combo and Accuracy meter in the subby beta, and I have never failed so badly)
