I still fail to see how omitting information synthesizes a speed mod other than changing the duration of time available to see a given note. It doesn't change spacing, which is primarily where much of the strength of a speed mod is derived.

The other thing a speed mod does is cause there to be less information on the screen for the eyes/brain to process at once, making reading patterns much easier.

At least that's my theory. I know from personal experience that back before speedmods I couldn't even read CIA Rave without screencut and could AAA easily with, and others had similar experiences, so clearly it helped for some reason.

Re: does anyone still use the half screen method?

I don't just use Cut screen at 1.25x speed mod. I mean, I can easily read up to 1.75x and do pretty well. I've been using the cut-screen method for quite a time now, just like everybody else, but I didn't drop the lot. I kept my cut-screen to good use, but increased the speed-mod slightly.

I don't really care about all the technical aspects of screencutting and vision, but all I know is that I play well with 1.25x cut screen (or 1.5x slightly less cutscreen), and that's all that matters.

Some patterns I still read better on 1x screencut. I could AAA some songs on 1x which I can't get better than 5-0-0-0 on using 1.75x. e.g. Choprite, Rottel-da-Station, The Lunatic Princess-

          Also, THIS.

edit: of course, there are also patterns I read better on 1.75x. I can't really PA parts of TGWP using 1x.

                I need to screen-cut on 2x speed. =[

I definitely agree with you in speed mods are definitely preferable to screen cutting any day. However, for those of us like me who just can't get used to the timing with speed mods, screen cutting makes a HUGE difference on 1X speed. I personally think there are two purposes to a speed mod. One, to create more space between the arrows, and two, to have fewer arrows on the screen which doesn't overload your brain. The space between arrows doesn't bother me since I am so used to the spacing on 1X speed... and the screen cut accomplishes the other purpose.

Just as some evidence... here is a score on None Would Escape without screen cutting on 1X. (this is the one FMO I have AAA'd just for comparison)

As you can see... HUGE HUGE difference.

Re: does anyone still use the half screen method?

Most people who play SM/FFR a lot can probably read around C1000-1100 or so without failing, and ~600-800 comfortably. Spacing matters, but it's insignificant compared with the reaction time. Less reaction time = automatic reduction of the possible margin of error on any arrow. Up to a point, you could probably have a Cmod high enough that it would be impossible for you to get a good in FFR (or a perfect in SM). Of course, that'd mean that the entire screen was within the marvelous window. But who'd want to specialize that much and learn to read that fast?

I still screen cut at 1.0x, until I can't see the combo number (over half I guess).

wow i love how everyone seems to not screencut anymore
ive been screencutting on 1x since i found out about it, and before speed mods, honestly for me, it gets rid of the combo counter, and arrows farther down, which normally distract me from the top arrows, plus by giving myself less time to react i hit more accurately... though i dont understand how that works, its ok, because when you show friends ffr with screencutting, they are very impressed =D
