Tutorial: FFR on a dance mat

OK, well before I start off, I’ve only made a few tutorials, so sorry in advance if it sucks. First things first: there are a few essentials you need in order to play FFR on a mat.

    1. Dance mat
    2. PS2 > USB Converter (this is mine: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?cat...oducts_id=255&)
    3. JoyToKey [info page: (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016...y/english.html) or install: (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016...y/jtk374en.zip)]

Chances are you have your mat hooked in and the proper drivers installed, so we can skip that stage. Download JoyToKey from the second JoyToKey link above. Extract the zip to somewhere easy to access. Open JoyToKey.exe. Click “Create” and title it FFR. All the buttons should be set to disabled in your FFR config file now, all you need to do now is configure them. Do not use the top four buttons labeled “LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN” (these are reserved for joysticks, and aren’t used on a dance mat). JoyToKey has a list of 32 buttons, and four of the numbered ones correspond to the UP, DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT buttons on your mat. Now you have to figure out just which button numbers your computer assigned to the UP, DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT. You can do this as follows:
Start > Control Panel > Game Controllers … highlight the controller that is your dance mat. If there is only one to choose from, this is your mat. Click the Properties button. A new window should pop up, go to the “Test” tab. You should see buttons 1-16.
Go to your mat and step on the LEFT arrow. One of the numbers on screen should light up (for me button 16 lit up). Repeat this for RIGHT, UP, and DOWN. Remember what arrow is which button and go back to JoyToKey. In JoyToKey, go to the number of the button that corresponds to your left arrow. Double-click the number; a dialog box should pop-up. Hit the left arrow key on your KEYBOARD, then click OK. Repeat this for the other 3 arrows. Now minimize JoyToKey but do NOT close. Go to FFR or a text file and see if when you press an arrow on your mat if you were successful. Your mat should now be operating just as your arrow keys would. Before you go and play FFR I would recommended turning the repeat rate and repeat delay down under keyboard properties, since holding an arrow while dancing an FFR song would register multiple BOOs. You should be able to make this less of a nuisance by turning the rate and delay down. You can do this in Control Panel under Keyboard.

Any questions, reply here or IM me: jallen1788 and I’d be glad to help you.

Feel free to come back and post pics of how well you can step FFR songs. Many are a lot harder than most StepMania. It would be amazing if anyone could pass Flight of the Bumblebee, let me know if you do.

Thanks to Spazzbite for the JoyToKey idea, and thanks to 87x for helping me figure everything out.

*EDIT* I found a way to disable keys from repeating when being held down. This is useful because when u step FFR songs holding the arrow down registers a boo, as well as hitting the wrong arrow. In order to disable keys from repeating go to "Accessibility Options" under control panel. Click Settings under the FilterKeys section. Click the radio button next to "Ignore Repeated Keystrokes." Click OK but don't forget to check the box next to "Use FilterKeys" before clicking OK again. Click OK to exit accessibility options. Now you can hold down an arrow as long as you want and it won't register a boo, but like I said before, if you hit the wrong arrow you will still register a boo.

Nice tutorial. I'll try it out tomorrow.

    -_-

EDIT: It would be good if it didnt' erase your settings after you closed it.
