    I want to say that it spawned from DDR and is technically getting a Great on the last note. Its definition has been expanded to just finishing with one Great no matter where it occurs.

    There are some gurus of the terminology here on FFR, so if I'm wrong, they'll tell you what's right.

      Was the 'great' arrow black? I think that was the reason for the color choice. Or that black represents death, and you want to kill yourself if you get one. :P

        I think what foilman said is probably right. I'm sure it goes back to DDR at some point, similar to other terms, like "AAA".
