    Official Tourney Divisions?

I don't know if this should be in the tourney sub-forum or not, but I wanted to ask: What are the guidelines for sorting us in the official tourney? Like how do you decide what division someone is going to be in? Because people can be really good at say 1 or 2 songs of 10 difficulty, but in reality, they can't play the songs of that difficulty well for the most part. Is there anything is specific (other than the level rank as a whole) that you look at to decide on the division?
Many people were misplaced in the last tourney due to whatever reason. I for one was placed in Advanced, and was worse than so many of the Intermediate players. I kinda want to know what made me Advanced in the last official tourney.

If Sprite- or another mod could respond that would be excellent ^_^
    Thanks =D

Stats that should be considered: Tier points. You can generally get a very good feel directly from the tier point screen where some one is at.

If someone can FC FMO's it will show up. If someone has had good PA on some VC's it will show up. If someone has 0 TP's then I guess the level rank list should be looked at.

        Tier Point, Level Rank, etc.
also, there will be some minimum requirements/disqualification rules to block alts or cheaters.

The organizers can know how good the participants are, so don't worry.

          Re: Official Tourney Divisions?

I'm pretty sure the co-ordinators of the tournament are accurate in their decisions, like earlier said there would be tier points and levelranks to look at. Using my tier points (75) and my level rank (400 something) I think I would be placed in Intermediate. I would probably be a mid-intermediate / high -intermediate.

But generally it's nothing to worry about. If it needs be required, you'd probably be allowed to ask why you got placed in that role.

            Re: Official Tourney Divisions?

The thing people need to understand about the way these tourneys work is basically this: Before it even starts, somewhere around 90% of all particpiants have absolutely no chance to win.

Sounds harsh, but when you have an open tourney with no qualifiers that's the reality of it.

The last official tourney I was put into intermediate. I was eliminated by the 4th round. Does that mean I should have been in beginner? Not necessarily. The idea that you should be put in a division that you have a very good chance to win certainly sounds nice to each individual, but there is such a wide range and variance in actual skill, dedication and willingness to invest time among people who will sign up, that we would need probably 500 divisions or more to actually give -everyone- a shot.

It is unfortunately the case that there will be people in intermediate who've only been able to AAA songs that might get them soundly into round 3 or 4, there are going to be people in advanced who have just enough tier points to put them out of intermediate but where they will get stomped by the people -just- low enough to stay out of expert.

The prime sorting mechanism generally goes something like this:

Look at tier points. Over a certain amount is automatically the top division. None is most likely the bottom division, leave everyone else floating nebulously.

Look at top X levelranks that are -not- AAAs. If you're in the middle group, and your best non-AAAs are 11s and 12s, you're higher up than people whose best non-AAAs are 8s and 9s.

Beyond that, a lot of it will likely have to do with figuring out how many people need to be in each division (The lowest one is always largest, and up from there) and sorting people based on overall skill in a big list, and putting the top X of that list into one division, and the next X into the next one and so on.

I seem to recall the breakdown last time being beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, and I'd really like to push for 5 divisions this time, but that seemed to me to have been the basic policy last time, and I don't know why it would change overmuch.

Edit: Bluearrowll, with 75 tier points, 475 FCs, 84 skill tokens and an average rank of 445, I'd actually expect you to be in the low end of Advanced, rather than the high end of intermediate.

              Re: Official Tourney Divisions?

I think tier points should only count for people that will play VC+, as in expert and whatnot.
Example: Personally, I can SDG most 9's and 10's, and FC a few 11's, but I only have 80-ish tier points. However, my average rank of 227 reflects my consistent high scores.
EDIT: WAS 227, now I guess it's 229... time to get to work

But.... there's probably no point in talking about this at all, because the big guys in charge likely have already decided or are deciding on their methods without input from the FFR community. It's just my thoughts and my opinions..
              see everyone there!

                Re: Official Tourney Divisions?

I have been telling numerous amounts of people what devonin just said. Only about 10% of the people who sign up have a chance of winning.

To answer the OP's question, I am using average rank, FC's, AAA's, Tier Points, and top 10 non-AAA's. For the upper divisions, I know most of the people, so I will also be able to just judge by what I have seen and by what I already know about the person. I am hoping to have Devonin help me with the lower division people, since he will be able to judge them much more accurately than I can.

I only have 231 tier points, Intermediate plz.

Not a chance. And lets not turn this into a "What division would I be in/What division do I think I should be in/Post my stats" thread.

You misunderstood my post, Devonin. I'm saying going by tier points is an unreliable method, as I am a lot better then it shows. I only read the first post so you might have already explained this or not. :P

                          Re: Official Tourney Divisions?

we plan on having 5 divisions... and likely, 75 TPs will be enough to be in the 2nd highest. the goal is to have the highest division be very small... 16-24 people, 32 tops. The lowest division and the 2nd lowest division will likely have close to 1000 people each, IMO. the 3rd and 4th will both be groups of people who have TPs, but who knows where the cutoff will be... or if it will be a straight TP cutoff (likely won't). But I'm guessing 60+ TPs will get you into the 4th... but I could be wrong. It could be 100 that gets you into the 4th. To get into Expert, you'll need at least 400 or 450 TPs, or be a user who is well well known to have serious skills, even with less overall gamewhorage.

Also... no system will be perfect. People will be placed incorrectly. But few. I'd say less than 1% (which is less than 20 people if we have 2000 sign up). Sprite works damn hard to make this as perfect as possible, and devonin will as well.

ps - so as not to turn this into a "i have x TPs, where am i?" thread... i'm locking it. since the question has been answered thoroughly.
