I know I've been asking a lot of newbish questions recently... but nevertheless, another one. What is the exact procedure for getting permission from artists? Do I have to ask other people to get permission for me? If not, how exactly do I ask, and what conditions and terms do I specify? I know some artists are against the use of their music in earning money (ie. subscriptions). Should I introduce FFR as a whole to the music provider? Or should I not ask at all and just go by the terms they specify on their own page?

List of some artists I'd like to step and submit once submissions are open again (probably summer right?).

*Note: Most of these, with the exception of Yuuyu, are jpop artists who utilize vocaloids. They made some hit songs on nicovideo and allow free downloads of their music from various mirrors.

Usually, you can just ask them if you can use their song in a game that's similar to DDR, and explain it to them. Introduce them to the site, or whatever, but that's generally all you have to ask them, and MAKE SURE that you have a clear answer that you DEFINITELY have permission...

Ok... well for the record. I hereby state that Xx{Midday}xX grants permission for simfile artists to step our songs and use them for any music game. XD

Hmm... I'm still a bit uncertain about the contents of asking, but I guess I'll take a shot at it.

Just message the band/artists saying why you need the permission ect.. make it simple at first and if they ask for more details give em' more.

I've messaged/emailed so many artirts, turned down by a lot tho XD.

I'd say the number one reason for rejection is that the band doesn't own the rights to distribute their music, and the label, much larger and richer, is disinclined to give permission for free when they could charge royalties for it.

EnR tends to ask more "mainstream" artists, ones that are signed to American labels and don't like doing things for free... or are too large to need our publicity. That's why.

For smaller artists or international artists, it tends to be easier... they're more likely to give permission. They want people to hear their music, aren't really interested in making money off it, and/or need the publicity from our largely American userbase that likes Japanese music.


I'd suggest emailing or contacting the artists... try to be as personal as possible (aka, don't make it look like you're sending out a form letter to a ton of artists. try to personalize it a bit for each artist). inform that about FFR. that we're a very large DDR-like game on the internet, we have 1.5 million users, we have almost 1000 levels in our game from hundreds of artists of all shapes and sizes. Etc, etc. Inform them that the levels are free to play, we'll link to their website, they'll get publicity, the music won't be downloadable from our site, etc.

So... basically none of these artists would apply to that reason. XD Great! They all make their original music. Despite the whole controversy about YAMAHA having rights over the utilization over vocaloid song distribution, YAMAHA is losing against the artists, so the artists are free to do what they want with their original music. (In my opinion, YAMAHA saying that artists have to get permission for distributing their original music is like saying musicians have to get permission to play their live concerts if they're using a YAMAHA piano. That's plain stupid. YAMAHA declared that vocaloids would be treated as instruments.) Most of these artists, including the renowned OSTER Project, does this for sheer fun anyways.

Any particular reason why none of the vocaloid songs by OSTER Project has been released on FFR? I'm sure they would make great simfiles... I was wondering if it was permission related.

One more thing... while you're around Tass... when is submission going to open again?

So, if I wanted to make a stepfile of a song, I would have to come into contact with them somehow and ask them for permission... right? Just wondering... how do you make a stepfile?
