For me I use 1.5x and thats it. Though the autofail does help.
Unless you get nervous, then autofail will only make things worse.
When I try to use autofail, and it fails me, it just gets me a little frustrated.
Until finally I can't even PA the song.
First off, don't switch play style because someone says its easier. I think of it like a batting stance, lots of people have lots of ways, and how it feels most comfortable is the correct one for you.
First, some people like autofail and some don't. Some say it makes them nervous so they are better off without it. I personally love it because when i dont use it, im constantly looking at the score to see if i had a good that i missed, and that causes me to miss arrows. At least with autofail on, i can be sure that so far, everything is perfect. So experiment with autofail to see if it is right for you.
Secondly, start easy and get harder. Just go to the sticky with the song difficuulties and go down the list.
Final AAA count: 86+1+19 = 106 (I'm Done)

I think I have another opinion on autofail. As cosmic said, it does make you paranoid that you'd fail, but I have to object about looking at the arrows. You are playing a game that is based on getting the correct rhythm, not getting the arrows to its destination. From the previous posts, dark and hidden have been suggested which are pretty useful on training and preparing yourself for the correct beats. And about starting with easy songs, I find it kind of ironic that I AAA parachute (stupid clowns) in one try and spent almost 3 days trying to AAA moonlight sonata and raindrops. my point? look for songs with a distinctive beat rather then browse by the difficulty.
Spread is a somewhat big debate topic, but I think its vital to play Guru songs or any wall-ish song later on. example is torinouta, with its almost wall steps ( 4 arrows same time almost), playing regular, sometimes your keys won't go through depending on the computer and keyboard, it will start beeping. Not completely sure, but theres a limitation on how many keys of the same row you can press. Spread however, is 2 on the arrow pad and 2 on the number pad which does bypasses the racist (ya, im a hater) limitation. Thus, you can play easier and WONT miss on those wall-ish songs
( I've attempted torinouta on regular about 200 times, and I FINALLY full comboed it yesterday -_- spread)
