today is the first time ive ever played FFR2, and I was wondering what 'Mods' means on the grade screen? Thanks.

speed mods, which speed up or slow down how fast the arrows come up the screen. there are other mods, which you can experiment with using... like tornado, blink, etc etc. mostly, they make the game harder, but can be a fun diversion from the norm.
