Re: Help
I found this in the FFR Hand Positions Guide
Index: Index is probobly the most unique hand style there is. It uses only the index fingers of both hands.* Surprisingly enough, many elites (such as Novacaine) use this position.
*note: most index player alternate index fingers instead of assigning 2 arrow keys to each finger
Fingering: Your 2 index fingers alternate, and hit the designated arrow. Btw, index fingers don't use the number pad, just the 4 normal arrows keys.
Advantages:
1. With this position, you can use more then one finger for one key which may help you on jackhammers.
2. Trills can be more comfortable and easier with this position.
Disadvantages:
1. You may accidently miss the arrow.
2. It may be harder for fast songs.
3. Jumpstreams may be harder with this position.
4. Hands and Quads.Comment

Re: Help
are you supposed to alternate hands every note? like if i do that, for instance on alpha helix, i find my left index hitting the right arrow and my right index hitting the left arrow, which im pretty sure isnt right. i need someone to tell me exactly how to do itComment

Re: Help
In most cases, that's exactly how index works, but like actual steps, you do tend to have crossovers.
In that case, unlike feet where you can twist your body, you use one finger to hit consecutive crossover steps (which is why many prefer to use more than 2 fingers in this game). This gets really hard to do when you start indexing songs like Gradeus (I'm weird, because I do the crossovers like how you'd do it on feet about half of the song).
e.g. Gradeus has a 4-8-6-8-4 16th step near the first 350 combo. In that part, you'd hit the 4 with your left naturally, then 8 with your right naturally, but the 6 is hit with your right hand as well by sliding or a fast finger (same goes for the 8-4 part); otherwise, you can hit it as the left finger hits the 6 causing your left index to go over/under your right index and can get awkward if you don't practice the song that way.Last edited by Kotarouchan; 03-22-2007, 10:11 AM.Comment

Re: Help
For those who don't know, the keys your indexes should be using:
Left Index: Left, Up, Down
Right Index, Right, Up, Down
If the streams you are playing are index friendly, then you shouldn't have to double step/hit two consecutive arrows with the same index finger. You should be able to switch fingers for every arrow of the stream. If you're not, you're doing it wrong. (Remember, this is for index friendly streams)
What Katarou is saying is that, on crossovers (the one he explains (the 48684 crossover):
- 4 will be hit with your left hand. You should never have to hit the first arrow to a left handed crossover with your right index.
- 8 should be hit with your right hand
- 6 to unskilled/lazy indexers would also be hit with your right hand because when you actually try to do a crossover with your hands, on index, your hands and fingers get twisted up and are likely to cause you to miss and lose your combo. So you'd have to switch keys very quickly with this one finger, if you're doing it the "lazy" way.
- Given that you've hit the 8 and the 6 key with your right index, you will most likely hit the second 8 and the second 4 keys (the last two arrows of the crossover) with your left index. Doing the same thing that you just did with your right index, just flipped around.
Skilled indexers should actually be able to hit this pattern as a crossover. Left finger should be able to hit 4, 6, and 4 again with your left hand, and the right index finger will be used for both 8 keys and shouldn't move until the crossover is finished.Comment

That's what I do, but I thought giving the other way would sound easier to do n_n'Comment

Re: Help
Index is much more flexible than spread. I do do crossovers occasionally. Somewhere around 600-700 [going by memory], I do a crossover on CIA Rave.
I generally do left-down and up-right, but it can change - if necessary, especially on trills, I can use both fingers on left-down or both on up-right; it depends on the needs of the song.Originally posted by MalReynoldsit just goes with what I said
