As far as I was aware, using the arrow keys with four fingers is just called "4-finger" and that to be able to say you are "spread" you had to actually spread your hands out so that they both had space, such as askl, zx./, etc.
So, if I'm playing what I thought was spread with vbnm, you're saying that isn't really spread, since my hands aren't spread out? Anyway, playing with just the arrow keys in NOT spread.
A setup like vbnm would still have your fingers spread out over a span. It doesn't necessarially mean there has to be a gap between two of your fingers.

I never did bother to try and use any letters, I just used 4 finger arrow stlyle and turned my keyboard around so my fingers aren't running into each other

I usually play 4-fingered (arrow keys) but my laptop broke and I'm stuck on a pretty crappy one with sucky arrow keys.. so I connected a second keyboard to the laptop and I use 2,6 on numpad and left, up on the external keyboard. I think I play better with spread, but it hurts my left hand >_<

Oh sadness and pain you people bring me! The pain! You leave me here weaping tears of sorrow.. omg so emo!
i'm trying to play spread as as-kl but its hard, my cousin wickedawsomeful changed to spread a while ago (siggy told me lol) and i asked him to show me, well actualy he made me do it with a program called hot keys that HE DIDNT MAKE UP (as he so put it) so i'm getting better but not good yet...!
It takes time to get good at any style. Changing from one style to another will make you drop in skill, but if you are changing to spread then you should improve faster, especially with a base set up of knowing how to play.
