you dont really use four fingers, unles you go 2 handed.if its one handed, its much easier using 3 fingers in my opinion. ( i tried 2handing at STepMania 4.0)(not hte greatest choice of my life)

He said take up - as in you play one style and then decide to go index to improve (usually the indexers either started like they did because they felt comfortable, or they were already good at a different style and wanted to have fun like you said)

I used index for a long time before switching to spread because I couldn't read fast enough to do spread without mashing.Comment

exactly - you started as index then. You saw that index was a style that restricted you from doing certain songs.
As stated earlier, index is basically for people who want to be unique and original because index is hard to adapt to I think personally. Don't get me wrong there are probably indexers who are better than me altogether but that's my point of view.Comment
