Need help trying to run FFR on an Ubuntu VM on an M3 Macbook

I realize this is kind of a niche use of FFR, but it would be so cool if I could get it to work...

I am running an M3 Macbook owner by my employer. They run Microsoft Security software on it that disallows me from running programs outside of a whitelist. However, they allow me to run VMs on this laptop using a program called UTM, so I am thinking: could I run FFR from an Ubuntu VM and bypass detection?

However, I cannot get it to work. Wine seems to think it needs wine32 to run the game. When I try to install that, it tells me this package has been deprecated by libwine, a package that I apparently already have installed by installing Wine in the first place!

StackOverflow couldn't save me on this one. I recorded a quick 2m20s second video that illustrates this issue in context for anyone interested in helping.

Thanks for reading! I hope I'll get to show off our game to my co-workers

Not sure if this helps but if you can maybe switch to a different distro, probably an arch based distro. I run arch and ffr works fine from the wine package distributed from the package repository. Either that or find a way to install arch's wine package on ubuntu.

Thanks for the idea Creosm! I couldn't get Arch to work in desktop mode, but this made me realize... UTM supports running Windows 11, so I can use that instead of Wine.

And turns out, it works great! The framerate is not awesome, but it's certainly on par with the performance I could get out of my PC in 2015.

One thing I'll note for anyone who has trouble getting this to work, I had to use this section from the FAQ to get running. As soon as you start the Windows 11 VM under UTM, press a random key to launch the installer, otherwise you'll be stuck in the UEFI shell and will need to power off and try again.

      Consider this problem solved.

Also not sure if this helps, but I just got ffr to work on my M1 Pro flawlessly with whisky and dropping the R3 engine file into it. though
I understand this is a work computer, good luck!
