play more. higher your total score, better your rank. based solely on total score.

rank is updated about once a day.

Yup, that's it. The higher your total score, the better your rank. At the higher end, it's going to get harder to pass people, but at the lower end it's not *that* difficult to do. My initial rank was 8384 with about 59.2 million points (July 5) and went to 6452 with about 73.5 million points (July 8 ). Of course you have to wait for a rank update to be run before you'll get the increase even if you have the points. They are supposed to be done regularly, usually every day or two I've heard, but as you see there have only been two so far since I joined. I heard the rank updater was broken for a while so that's probably why. But now that I've got a stats sig, I don't really mind the wait. It gives me more time to earn more points to get a better rank.

The rank has been updated quite regularly now. Let's take a moment to honor the mods. w00t

        -edit-
Everything Dronak said was true by the way. On the lower end, if you raise by 100 mil, you'll go up about 2000 in rank. I was 512 and gained 120 mil since then, and I've barely went up 100 in rank. But, don't worry too much about rank, it doesn't mean too much. FFR is sheerly for fun

Yes, now that the updater program/script/whatever is working properly again, the updates have been much more frequent than for the first part of the time I've been here. And you're right, the ranks are more for fun than anything else. They don't measure skill, just points earned. So you can see who's played a lot and who hasn't. That's probably the main thing it's good for. You could be a really bad player, but if you played enough, you'd eventually have enough points to get a good rank. However, I do believe that the top ranked players are generally the most skilled players as well. I don't think they'd hit the very top end of the list if they weren't. And it is a lot easier to increase your rank on the lower end. To add to my previous list, I was ranked 4804 with about 93.3 million points on July 12 then 4654 with about 96.2 million points on July 13. Just 3 million points in 7 games was enough to raise my rank 150 places. I expect the changes to be slower now that I've reached 100 million total points.

Dronak what levels to you play? I mean which ones are you good at/practicing?
I play "One Last Battle" and "La Luna Caida" ALOT! i really like the stepfiles and songs..i have gained alot of points off these songs alone especially One Last Battle, i would have to say i started playing these levels for about 2 weeks now and have gained about 50 mill. from them and now im about 115 mill! and still goin strong. but levels like "Blank Knowing" tend to throw me off b/c of the stairs/ladders or whatever you call them. anyways yeah just play alot and have fun!

It sort of depends on what I feel like doing. I haven't gotten a full combo on all of the easier songs yet so sometimes I play them for that purpose. Lag often messes me up, but that's another topic. If I'm trying to get points, like I want X points before I go to bed and the ranks may be updated, I tend to play something like RainDrops or Terror from Beyond which has a lot of arrows and can give me somewhere around 700k points if I FC it.

When trying to improve and get a bit of a challenge to force me to get better, I try working on Standard or maybe Tricky level songs usually. That seems to be about my limit at the moment. Some of them I can pass, even if it is badly. Others I can't even get to the end of the song. I've been working on 136.6 a bit but it's always throwing me off for some reason. For a little while at least I was working on Bubbleman, too, after reading that it's not really as difficult as the game says. There are probably a couple more I tend to go back to for practice, but I can't remember which right now. One of the things I found out is that the density of the streams on some more difficult songs is high enough that I have trouble reading it, seeing which arrow's first, to know what order to press the keys. Some song I've been playing has color coded arrows, red, blue, and yellow. I kind of like this one for trying to learn to read the streams even if the color coding still confuses me a little. I can work more on hitting the keys and the technique for that once I can see the proper order of the arrows.

I'm also finding out that using one hand is getting harder. But when I try to use two hands, I usually end up doing worse. It just doesn't feel quite right to me so I usually slip back to one hand and just keep trying. I do need to work my index finger over to the down key more rather than almost always letting just my middle finger handle both up and down. I try, but sometimes it throws me off. I'll just need to practice more. I bet the harder songs have the potential to give you more points, but I'm not there yet. I've tried some of them just to see and do really poorly on them. I need to work up my skill on other lower level songs before I'm really ready for the harder ones.

P.S. -- Don't ask me what arrow patterns are called, I don't know. This is the only game like this that I've played. I'm trying to pick up the lingo and terms as I go along.

Edit: The song with the colored arrows I was talking about is Boss Machine (sonic2). Still a bit too hard for me. I don't think I've made it to the end yet. The doubles during the runs towards the beginning get me everytime.
