    About Difficulty (Fingers and Feet)

I'm new to games like this, but started getting curious about the difficulty levels of the different songs/levels. In particular, I was wondering if you've got to do things differently here, where we play with our fingers on a keyboard, than say in the arcades where you play with your feet on a dance pad. What determines the difficulty level of a song and how is it different for feet and fingers? Here are some things I was thinking of, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who know this stuff better than me.

The faster the rhythm, the harder it is. Runs of 1/4 notes usually aren't hard to hit, but going to 1/8 or shorter tends to be harder. I guess this works for both fingers and feet, but can you go further on the keyboard, to shorter notes than you could do on a pad? The tempo has some effect, too, in that the faster the song is the harder it can be to keep up or catch up and get back on beat after a mistake. I guess that has about the same effect for feet or fingers. Hitting two arrows simultaneously has to be harder on a pad where it most likely involves jumping (I've never played with my feet); on a keyboard that's no big deal. So runs of doubles, while I sometimes have trouble with them here, are probably even harder on a pad. Using them is probably more of a difficulty increase on the pad than the keyboard. I guess something similar could hold for the general pattern/order of arrows. Certain sequences may be harder to do with your feet than the keyboard. So what's used to make the keyboard stepfiles harder? Mainly faster, more complicated rhythms and a faster tempo? I'm just curious. Because I'm new I have to stick to easier levels and I'm a bit curious about what I can expect at the higher levels when I eventually get there. Plus I think the feet/finger difference is an interesting point and was wondering how that worked.

This is how I do it: If your mashing by the 3rd arrow, its 15.
If Your bored by the third arrow, its 2.
    works every time.

Well, it's nice to get some replies, at least the thread isn't being ignored. But does anyone have more serious replies? I am kind of interested in knowing what sort of moves make songs more difficult and if things are done differently fror keyboard and dance pad.

on feet, sometimes there are moves where you have to rotate your body and "cross over" on to other arrows. if you had a Left Down Right sequence you would step it Left Right Left. sometimes songs (exotic ethnic on ddr is a good example of this) throw large numbers of these at you, forcing you to consume more stamina by rotating your center of balance.

typically 8th note jumps or eigth notes leading into jumps make songs a bit more difficult, and obiviously increasing the speed or having "different" notes (such as triplets) can make a song harder.

a big difference is the sheer number of arrows. if i tired to play Legend of Max on feet, for instance, I might A it, but if I played it on keyboard I could easily AA it or AAA it. stamina becomes a huge factor in harder foot songs.

keyboard tends to be more about quick thinking and complicated arrow patterns. try runnymorning or CIA rave to get an example of this.

              Srry. Just kidding.
I dont know, if it just feels right for a score, I rate it.

I know you and ToshX were kidding, but I did want a real answer. Thanks for the info, NirvanaFreak0872. Thinking about it, I see that you're right. Stamina would be a much bigger factor in playing on a pad and moves that shift your center around (like those crossovers you mentioned) would wear you down faster. So because that and jumps and such don't have much of an effect on keyboard playing, it is basically speed and density of arrows that make keyboard levels hard. I gave both of those songs a try, just for fun. I think I got a combo of 4 in CIA rave and don't remember what I got in RunnyMorning. No surprise. But it did give me a look at the really high levels and you're right, it is basically a fast tempo with a ton of arrows. And people can do those? Wow.

One of the more difficult things in FFR is jumps thrown in seemingly randomly in the middle of fast streams. So jumps can have an effect on keyboard rating.
