    Speed question

Ok so I've played on 1.9x for a few years now, but I'm starting to be able to get some decent PA's on 80+ songs
If I adapt to play at a higher speed, say 2.3x or something, will that help improve my scores on those high end difficulty songs, or does it not matter at all what speed I play on?

    Re: Speed question

Speedmod is a preference unique to players that lengthens or shortens the gap between notes and general scrolling speed.

Being on a higher speedmod would help you read a pattern that is really tight, although you won't have near as much time to hit it before it passes your receptors.

      As said, it really depends.

Dossar plays on 2.25x which is below the average
Staiain plays on 3.8x which is a lot above the average

      Both are epic as fuck.

If you aren't already doing this, you can't say you're stuck. Plateauing doesn't really exist, if you aren't improving it means you haven't put in the effort needed to improve, or your effort has been misapplied. It's more of a problem at really high levels, but never totally concrete.

Didn't Dossar use to play on 1.75x?

Increasing your speedmod will definately help you read faster songs.
is expressing my inability to create a creative signature an act of creativity in and of itself?

I always found comfort in lower speedmods so I could relax on denser things but yeah comes down to preference :v

If you're on Velocity or Legacy, 1.9x is fine. I don't see any benefit from going any higher than 2.0x. It's all preference though.

                  Re: Speed question

after observing *lots* of different players, I've noticed the following. reading speed is mostly a factor of:

                  - current ability to actually do the notes

                  - monitor type

                  - window size

when you observe players playing DDR/IIDX on arcade machines, there is not NEARLY as much variation in reading speed. a lot of this variation comes from different monitor types, different window sizes and so on.

                      Re: Speed question

On the Velocity and Legacy engines you have a small area to read. I used 1.75x on those engines because it wasn't too slow but also not too fast at the same time and anything outside was visually disgusting/made the game play choppy. 0.25x intervals for speedmods are what work for me mainly because it allows for nice spacing in between notes.

Since R^3 has a larger reading area, I bumped my speedmod to 2.25x for that. Most other players seem to be able to read a higher speed and just react from what they see, but with complex charts I find it much more efficient to lower the speed and look at the sections beforehand (isolation, etc.) so you have more time to react.

In short: Find a speed that's not too slow and not too fast. It's good to have a balance between reaction time but also having enough spacing between notes for readability. Too much spacing from a high speed modifier can give the illusion that a part is slower or easier than it actually is.
