FFR <-> DDR Skill Transfer?

I'm looking for someone who has experience changing between FFR and DDR. I'm interested in buying a used DDR set and pad (any recommendations? I'm shooting for less than $50), but I wonder if any skill from FFR will transfer to DDR.

Is it a large amount of skill transfer FFR -> DDR, or very little?
How about DDR -> FFR?

hmm, i wonder if that would actually transfer skill from ffr to ddr lol. especially if you use 4 finger spread instead of 1 hand for original arrow placements/judgements.

edit: unless youve already tested that candor?

DDR/ITG/PIU tests lower arm strength (if you're playing with a bar) and calf strength (raising your legs to hit notes). FFR/SM/other VSRGs with a keyboard tests finger strength, wrist strength and to a very small extent, forearm strength. You can connect the dots.

You'll be able to read better in DDR if you played a VSRG (like FFR) if you were significantly better at it, since you are able to read patterns a lot better. You'll only be able to recognise patterns significantly easier if you play index at a semi-high level. That's about it.

Ehh, i found that after being able to play 230 stream on a keyboard, 170 stream on a pad is easier to read. Its still hard for me to play on a pad, but it can help with reading of notes. You still need to move your feet.

It doesnt matter where you draw the line, everything leads to the same place... Over the line!

I fail standard charts on DDR so, not at all. Same concept, but no direct correlation. Only similarities.

its also very cardiovascular until you learn to how actually play and hit the innermost part of the arrows. which i have some trouble with after all these years of playing. when i get tired is when i start losing that ability lol

as for reading ability. you won't have any. you'll want a faster scroll rate on the game because of how you play this but you dont have the same muscle memory and reaction time as you would with FFR so you have to slow it down and its just a mess.

Re: FFR <-> DDR Skill Transfer?

I went well from DDR --> FFR, and am currently in D4, as well as constantly improving!
Technically it's DDR --> looking for a DDR keyboard game online --> StepMania --> FFR, but what's the difference in reality?

EDIT: Also, in DDR, I can now pass 10-footers (old difficulty scale) with some being an A! (ones with As include MAX 300, Paranoia Survivor 270, and Crazy Love!)
EDIT 2: You gotta play til you pass out in order for this skill to accomplish; as in FFR, you gotta play til your fingers can't move faster, as I'm still improving in that skill!

Hm. I'm getting some mixed answers here. Well thanks, everyone. I bought Dance Dance Revolution II for Wii for only $20 with the pad included, what a bargain!

Just throwing another question, how do you get a "level" icon at the bottom? Some people have "Level 70" at the bottom -- how do you qualify for that.

Oh god ew.... never played the Wii titles but, those are a good start as they are the easier DDRs (well, maybe not the wiimote gimmick but normal charts should be easier). I'd suggest grabbing a PS2 and finding all of those if you can. TONS of different files for you to go through and you should be able to get a cheap pad almost anywhere. Also, beware of the differences between home pad and arcade. I LOVE playing in the arcade, but those soft pads for home are terrible and, you're able to just glide your feet so you usually do better from home.

But, as others have said, I find reading charts is a lot easier when I go from FFR to ITG/DDR/PIU but, the physical part is something that you just have to keep doing over and over again. Your accuracy may go up as well. Mine seemed to when I went back to ITG on my computer when playing with keyboard.

Good luck!

you can read the arrows but not with your feet, with your hands. reading ability is all about muscle memory as well. which you won't have playing DDR for the first few months most likely.

The only thing FFR did for me was being able to play DDR/ITG at higher scroll speeds.

If you're playing on the foam mat that they include with the console DDR games, there isn't really much that can help you.

I doubt anyone can score well on anything DDR level 6 or above on those things.
