I have no idea where to put this. Well maybe, but the SM subforum is full of threads with people who know what they're doing. Mods can move this if needed.
I've been telling people I don't use SM because every time I try to set it up something goes wrong. If someone would be willing to help with setting up Stepmania via Skype or my Twitch stream or something (even on the forums, but having a view of my computer screen is probably useful), that'd be super cool. I'll give you credits too if you want.
I have SM 5 downloaded (should I use something else/what's the best version?), a crapton of songs/packs downloaded, and a theme to use (Staiain linked his in stream a couple times). I'm pretty certain that my Songs directly is set up correctly, as is the Theme folder.
Main issues:
Nothing wants to show up in SM, I've heard that maybe it only recognizes SSC files rather than SM files, but I dunno what that's about. Nothing else useful has come up from about 2 hours of searching, since it brings me to sites saying things I've already read that should work but didn't.
It's also set up completely different than I'm familiar with seeing from everyone else, probably due to not having changed any themes. (So it takes me a while to find the settings I'm looking for if I'm trying to navigate to stuff)
