It's definitely not what it was during the height of DDR and Guitar Hero, but I wouldn't say it has died out entirely. It has just become more of a niche.

EDIT: I should say in North America. I have heard that arcades, along with rhythm gaming, are still quite popular in Japan.

I also still stand by my point that Facebook has potential to get this community growing again and maybe quite popular. But as mentioned in a few other threads, there are things that need to be done before we do a big Facebook publicity push (such as site revamping, song offset sync fixes, more finalized and standardized engine UI [I mean let's face it, we have three engines commonly used for one game], and lag reduction to somehow manage).
I think that implementing FFR (at least just the game) onto facebook would be awesome. The community seems to be worried too much about execution... it doesn't hurt to plop the .swf onto a page and generate a button that allows one to create a username. I'm sure there's much to it like justin_ator says but the way I see it, the community is foregoing a wonderful opportunity either because it's lazy (although I doubt) or because it has "better" things to do...

              Re: FFR's future?

some would say ffr is always dying

but i don't think that's true, i think it's fairly stable right now, as in we have people that come here still for like 5+ years or more. It might have been more popular at one time (before the site went down for 10 months in 2010) but i think right now it's stable and for the most part the people that have been here a really long time will still continue to come here (even if they don't all play they're still a part of the community).

as for growth, it's possible even right now, we have the game, the forums, the profiles; things people like in general it's just a matter of if people are interested enough to join us.

                Re: FFR's future?

The game's got a strong core which ensures that there'll pretty much always be some kind of a base; it won't "die out" unless the bills stop being paid.

That said it'd be nice to see injections of fresh blood, because of what that could mean to the community, eg new stepartists, more motivation for stepartists to submit to batches, more permissions etc etc. Right now what's done around the website like tournaments and events mainly cater to existing players. Drawing new players in (and keeping them) is much tougher: the long-awaited interface upgrade (plz), widgets (great when they existed), etc. If there was some way of porting fiffer to general game websites like kongregate that'd be great.

of course it's not like anyone's getting paid to actually do any of this so i don't like the idea of expecting any of it. I don't much play the game anymore but appreciate all the effort that's put into it behind the scene, and will happily wait and see what developments come next
