    Help with jumpstreams

My biggest flaw at the moment is that I'm stupidly bad at dense jumpstreams. I can do them moderately well but once it starts getting too fast I just can't read it for shit no matter how hard I concentrate and I just flail and get a ton of garbage. The main songs I've been trying to gauge improvement with are Defection and Makiba since they are super heavy on jumpstreams (I have horrible scores on both of them compared to lots of other songs in the same range).

I could really use some good tips on how to practice this sort of thing in ways that I could actually improve since just simply playing the various songs a lot doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. I've seen people saying stuff like "Just make a chart in stepmania and practice there", but does that really help with FFR? The timing, look, and feel are completely different.

With the official coming up soon I want to get this nailed down ASAP since it's frustrating as hell playing in a range I can usually get close to SDGs on most songs but end up with 50+ goods and a bunch of other crap.

there really isn't a silver bullet to getting better at jumpstream other than to just play hard enough jumpstream files such that you can barely read and play them but you don't have to mash to hit. use rates if you find some file is too easy and want to add variety.

Slow speedmod down, and just practice them a lot.

Slower jumpstreams. Etude To A Dragon is a popular recommendation for getting used to the idea of seeing jumps inside of 16th streams. Alternatively, you could use Rcubed's rates function to slow down a song to get a better idea of what's going on.

The one tip I would give is that you have to have some idea of what's going on in the mind of the sim artist. They want to follow the music and emphasize specific sounds with jumps while at the same time making the entirety of the file fun to play. Sometimes it helps just to know that there is a method to the madness you're looking at, even if you don't yet know anything past that.

Some other files in the area of Defection and Makiba that I suggest you try for jumpstreams include the following:

-S.E.B. in B.E.D. Sanzath uses a new idea of using a non-layered stream at first to get your fingers used to moving at the required speeds for the song, though the ending is tough. Also uses some color theory in the second half.

-K8107: A great trilling/anchor practice file. Very useful for developing the necessary control.

-Euromorroc (Clean Edit): The middle is rough, I'll admit, but the patterns in the ending flow very well. While not technically a jumpstream since they only occur every other 4th note, the 182 bpm will still give you a nice workout.

-Ambient Angels: Another tournament file, this one repeats patterns quite a bit. So if you mess it up once, don't worry, it's coming up again!

practise trills and onehand trills, find the most optimal trill position for your hands (mine is when i raise only my right arm oddly enough), see how high bpm you can trill with consistency and practise reading patterns.

              I agree.

Play Stepmania if you really want to get better.

climax theory is hardly a new idea

I haven't tried slower speedmods...I've been trying sligtly faster to see if having stuff spaced out helps but didn't consider slower. Worth a shot :P

I have 2-4 already (link to 1 doesn't work and 5 isn't out yet as far as I can tell) but they are mostly songs that are WAY above anything I can even get close to doing. I suppose slowing down the speed a lot might help.

Slow down the rate on the songs that are too hard. Don't just play songs that are comfortable though. You won't improve. Play songs that you can't do well on and watch your improvement. Just don't play files you need to mash just to pass.

Well i had trouble with jumpstream too a while back, what i did was practice songs with a lot of jumps rather than play jumpstream. Once i had a good feeling for hitting jumps, jumpstream felt much easier. So my advice is to play songs with lots of fast jumps to get used to them.

Listen to this man, this has been proven to work multiple times

If you have problems reading JS in general:

Alternatively, I sometimes read jumpstreams as 2 sides instead of all 4 receptors at once:

You'll feel more comfortable the more you play jumpstreams and learn how to read them (by separating streams or reading gaps, whichever is more comfortable for a certain pattern) and you'll eventually combine the reading methods with more complicated patterns. Key is to stay calm at all times though because nervousness will not get you anywhere. If you feel your heart racing just take a breath (even if you miss something, because missing something doesn't really matter that much when you're still learning).

edit: also, a song I used to practice a lot on was Seven. AAA'd that song (at the time a challenging) before I AAA'd any Very Difficult song lol.
