It seems to change when you mess up.

EDIT: Hypothesis: It shows the number of steps left in the song from the last point you messed up (broke combo).

EDIT 2: It seems to change whenever you log a boo, and show the number of arrows left in the song.

NO . It wasn't always there (at least i never recalled that it was) because i played one last battle yesterday and i think that it counted the numbers the way it normally did , but today it was the little white number . My guess is that he thought it got in the way of people seeing the arrows so he made it smaller. I don't know for certain i may be wrong.

It tells you how many steps are left after each miss/boo.

it messed around with it, its doesn't seem to go lower on a boo, seeing as that doesn't mess up your combo, but only on a miss, so i am supporting talismans theory (mine too but i didn't get to post)
