Over the past few years, I've stopped playing FFR for different reasons - busy with schoolwork, no time in general to play, or just losing "the passion" or interest in FFR in general. I've found that I get tired of playing this game because of it's repetitiveness and that, basically, I'm just sitting at a computer tapping at keys.
A few days ago, I thought I would try to clean up my levelranks to boost my average rank, just for fun. I'm only about 20 songs in which is a start, but through this I've remembered why I play this game so much: the feeling of accomplishment after completing a song with a good score is exhilarating. I know I'm not of the skill level as many of you all here, but I still find it awesome when I get pretty decent scores on some songs.
The one I just played recently was Devotion and Desire - sightread play so it cut off a good chunk of my avrank, and I did pretty well on it.
In a song like this, there isn't much time for a good break (at my level, probably easy for some but regardless). Near the end, there's a sort of fast triplet section that switches patterns for a good 30 seconds. I played through it, and my fingers tensed up. Eyes locked on the screen, making sure I hit the notes at the right time. I AAA it. In my mind, I'm literally screaming "HOLY SHIT YES" and I smirk a little. My adrenaline jumps some and I'm totally pumped. When the song ends, I sit back on my chair, and just sigh. Holy shit, that was probably the funnest FFR experience I've had in a while.
It's times like that when I realize why I love, and keep playing this game. There's such a variety of different genres, patterns, styles, difficulties and more that the game never really gets boring for me. I'm not saying I speak for everyone, because they have their own quirks and tastes. I mean hey, sometimes I get really pissed that I don't do well on a song and exclaim loudly how this game is a steaming pile of shit. But I don't mean it, I'm just mad that I didn't do better on the song. The game itself is really cool, and the whole "rhythm game" scene is something that when you start playing, you can never really leave it.
I think the thread on the philosophy of stepmania/rhythm gaming really substantiates this and adds to the discussion of rhythm gaming (albeit more than just the arrow-tapping side of it), so if you haven't read it, please do.
I don't know why I made this thread (probably just pumped up from playing), but I hope some of you take away from this that even if you don't do well on a song, appreciating why you continue to play this arrow-smashing game will boost your spirits.
