    Measuring Progress

This was super neat and deserves a thread imo, mainly because I want other people to try this and see if they get the same result.

Instead of trying to improve scores today, I decided to try playing files that gave me a fuckton of trouble when trying to AAA them over a year ago. These were files that I'd play 25+ times in any given session without any luck snagging the AAA, until one random 'miracle' run came by where I didn't get too nervous coming into the last 100 notes or so.

So I tried a bunch of these files today...and AAA'd them all on either the first or second try.

That actually made me smile. I know you can tell you're improving when you're getting better scores on more difficult files compared to what you got in the past, but this was a pretty cool way of measuring progress for myself. Whether it was nerves, massive inconsistency on my end, major mindblocks, or maybe the file was just slightly too difficult for my skill level at the time, coming back to these files (some of which I haven't played in over a year) and destroying them all first or second try felt pretty awesome.

I implore (yes, implore) anyone who reads this to try the same and post in the thread. You might be surprised at what you can nail on command now compared to a year ago.

Here's a few of the scores for anyone interested:

First try, had trouble with this file back when it was released since I used to jumptrill everything lol

Second try, ending is so much easier than it used to be (nerves gone helps a lot too)

    First try O_O

This was really neat. I cheated the AAA on this a year ago by playing Left. Never had I AAA'd this mirror/non-mirror since I couldn't read the trillstream sections well. Nailed them first try.

Second try. Holy ****, this was probably the ex-FMO that gave me the most trouble. At least 15 BFs back when I was trying to AAA it for the first time, always in different spots too.

First try, shocked. Always used to derp something different on this file, either the jacks, color-fucced jumpstream, or choke on the ending. Really content with this.

I do the same thing haha but it's on a more ridiculous scale. Songs I had hella trouble snagging the AAA 2 months ago I can smash easily now, it's mostly a mental block thing for me though. When I used to play way more casually back in the day when I first joined the site I did this too and it always kept me motivated as well as all the other factors that motivate me.

Yeah it's so much fun to know you can AAA the previous hard stuff without much trouble. I got Toxiferous AAA too recently for the Fire and Lightning tourney, I had not played for a week and when I came back I tried it and got AAA on second try (which was my second FFR game after that little break, no warm up at all)

What if I can't come close to my old fluke runs? At least it's easier now to AAA easy-mid FMOs, but on harder files I'm at a complete loss.

Flesvelka AAA first try after that rage video, lmfaoooooooo good game. I do this sometimes too but don't really see a huge difference. I think the main issue for me is that I'm not struggling against other charts now, but rather the same ones plus a few more. So like back in the day when I seriously struggled to nail Perfect Cherry Storm (2-0-0-0), but couldn't do things that were a bit harder for shit (like mid-high FMO's and getting around 20 goods). Now, I can do those mid-high FMO's (reduced to low SDG's on most, etc) but still cannot get that PCS AAA. That's the case with a lot of stuff for me lmao.

            Re: Measuring Progress

Haven't really made much noticeable progress honestly. For me it's usually just a case of getting 1-2 less goods and fixing flags, lol.

I've pretty much hit my plateau

I actually played a little bit yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see myself struggling a lot less on Tell v3 (went from like 26g offline down to 10-0-1-3).

I seem to be handling extremes a bit better now, too. When I first tried Rave7 during the 6th Official, I couldn't FC it, and my best score on it was 16-0-5-4 for the longest time. Now, I'm down to 2-0-0-1 (and I have an assortment of really good FC/non-FC scores as well). Same thing with do i smile? -- I couldn't get under 30g consistently, and now I'm landing in the teens/SDG area (albeit with misses). I've definitely made a noticeable improvement in the past few months.
