The grades are based on the score you get. But most of the time the Marvelous and the perfects usually the same when you AAA or AAAA a song.

You can get AAAA on any version with marvs.

You get an AAA if you hit no greats or anything below.
You get an AA most of the time if you fc the song, unless you get alot of greats. You can get AA with some misses/boo's and stuff if you have low greats.

The rest just depends.

Stepmania scoring broken down

How do we figure out what ranking we got? We must refer to what I call "Perfect Attack Points." They're pretty simple, and they work like this. You get 2 points for getting a Marvelous/Perfect, 1 point for getting a Great, etc. Then you add them all up to figure out your "PA Score."

2 points = Marvelous
2 points = Perfect
1 point = Great
0 points = Good
-4 points = Boo
-8 points = Miss
6 points = OK

Now, what percent of PA points out of the maximum possible PA points did you get? Here's how it breaks down:

All marvelous = AAAA
100% = AAA
93% - 99% = AA
80% - 92% = A
65% - 79% = B
45% - 64% = C
Less than 45% = D

How about an example? Let's say on a particular song I get 300 perfects, 50 greats, 4 goods, and 1 miss. That's a grand total of 642 PA points. The maximum on the song is 710 (since there are 355 steps.) So I got 642/710 PA points. Meaning I got 90.42% of the maximum possible. So I got an A.

NOTE THAT THE GAME ROUNDS DOWN! So if you got 92.9% of the max possible PA points, you got A, not AA. Sorry. This means the ONLY WAY you can AAA a song is to get nothing but perfects on it.

What about AAAA? For scoring purposes, Marvelous is treated the same as a Perfect in all respects. You get a ranking of AAAA on a song if and only if you got nothing but Marvelouses. It's pretty much extreme bragging rights for ridiculously good players.

So, how do you get ranked higher? Get rid of Boos and Misses. These things SLAUGHTER your score. 1 miss turns 4 perfects into Goods. Look at it this way: 300 perfects and 10 misses = 220 perfects, 80 goods, and 0 misses. Yes, it works out to be the same PA score. Misses kill!

The screenshot on the top proves my point about the game rounding down. I got 99.61% of the possible PA points on that song (also a hacked ini file song) but only got a AA, because the game rounded me down to a 99% instead of 100%.

The screenshot on the bottom illustrates my point that all greats is NOT a AA, because with all greats you only end up with half of the possible PA points. You get a C. (Yes, I used a hacked ini file to make this screenshot.)
