May-hem: DAY TWO
…will be slightly delayed due to me just getting home and being absolutely exhausted. I’m trying to think of a slightly better way to execute this and a forum thread will likely be the solution.

May-hem + new simfile batch
Not sure if good or bad…
Anyway, two important things are happening tomorrow.
The May-hem event starts tomorrow (May 1st) at 4 PM server time. A few notes about this event that I’ll explain quickly:
- 1.) All screenshots and replays will be posted on the front page comments. This is a bit different from your normal event that takes place in a thread.
- 2.) There will be four challenges every day. These challenges will progress in difficulty throughout the month — the first day will be an absolute snoozefest for just about everyone; the last day will be near impossible. Read the requirements carefully, as some of them will require you to save a replay, rather than a screenshot.
- 3.) Challenges will only be up for one day (hence “daily”): if you cannot accomplish a day’s challenge before the next set of challenges are up, you can’t earn the…
- 4.) …reward. There are rewards tacked onto each challenge based on the difficulty of them. They start off very low/minor and will grow quickly.
- 5.) A boss challenge will exist every day, and will make up part of the four daily challenges. These are a bit harder than the other three and will always be worth the most in terms of credits. These will always be in a red font color.
On another note, the FFR Simfile Batch is supposed to open on May 1st, so while you’re waiting for the snoozefest challenges to pass on by, make a simfile and submit it to FFR.
FFR Batch reopens on May 1st!
Just a friendly reminder for everyone that the FFR simfile batch will open on May 1st. There have been some changes to the submission guidelines:
jimerax:
Submission Cap definition was changed due to submission system change.
[Submission Cap by Simfile Artist Point]
Maximum number of files you can submit in a period (2 months):
Negative SAP points – 1 file
0 – 9 points – 2 files
10 – 16 points – 3 files
17 – 39 points – 4 files
40 points or more – 5 files
(Period 1) Jan-Feb, (Period 2)Mar-Apr, (Period 3) May-Jun, (Period 4) Jul-Aug, (Period 5) Sep-Oct, (Period 6) Nov-Dec
For example, if you have 12 SAP then you can submit maximum 3 files in May-June period. After Jul, you can submit 3 more files. Also, when the judgement is done and your SAP/Submission Cap is increased, you can submit more files in the next period.
Any updates involving the FFR batch will be posted in the Queue/Batch Discussion Thread by one of our batch managers (bmah or jimerax). As usual, feel free to ask any questions you might have in the thread or in the comments below.

May Events on the Horizon
May is only a week away, and there are two scheduled events for this month that demand some community attention.
The first of the two events is a rehash of the Multiplayer Tournament conceived by former administrator psychoangel691; some of you might remember playing in it and recall that it was a pretty awesome experience, despite the few complaints about performance issues and lag, which a lot of people tie MP with altogether. Thanks to the efforts of resident developer Velocity and FFR’s 8th Official Tournament D2 champion (who is quite the skillful coder himself!?) arcnmx, those of you using the R^3 engine will now be able to partake in the event while being able to communicate/play with others on older engines!
As usual, the issue that arises: which older engine should be used? As of now, the intentions are to still use the Legacy engine, as it is the oldest engine and the engine that a good majority of the community has at the very least touched. You are free to comment on which engine works better for you in the comments below.
The second event is intended to attract all forms of players. Titled “May-hem” (name subject to change?), daily challenges will be posted from the first of the month all the way to the last day of the month, with each challenge having a small prize. These prizes will build up quickly if you’re able to do all of them! The earliest days will have challenges that our most unseasoned of players can do, and the difficulty will increase throughout the month. There will be a good mix of actual PA/FC/AAA challenges thrown in with some unorthodox anti-PA and strange requirements. There should be a good deal of fun for everyone!
Until next time, keep keysmashing (or don’t, go ahead and do other boring things if that’s your prerogative).

And now, for the real purpose of this front page post.
The next event that the FFR staff has for the site still requires some thinking, but it’s a bit more conventional and straight forward. As indicated by the image to the left, the next event that the FFR Events Team has for you is a crossword, and of course, is FFR-related. Thanks to the help of Velocity, bmah, and the collaborative effort of the other members of the Event staff, we have a real enjoyable multi-category Flash-based puzzle for you guys to try.
Oh, almost forgot to mention… this isn’t like your typical crossword where you can take your time. This is another competitive event with prizes involved, and the fastest solves will get better prizes. Different categories have different prizes based off of difficulty, so speed is of the essence!
This event will begin on the 19th at 7 PM server time, but signups close on the 19th at 5 PM server time.
The official thread for the Crossword event has been up for a little while now. If you haven’t noticed it lingering in the FFR events area, you can click this link to get to the first post of the thread for more details.
Have fun, everyone!

Songs of the Week (April 6-13, 2013)
Despite its very existence hinging on a necessity for widespread community participation and involvement, FFR still somehow manages to maintain the status of being a somewhat lonely game. A plain black background that contains absolutely zero semblance of conscious life, arrows that nonchalantly collide with their respective receptors over and over again for no real purpose other than because it’s what they were born to do, and the question of what happens to a player after their life bar hits zero all work together in tandem with one another to instill many with a sensation of unease as they play. Files are lovingly raised by their parents, the song and step artists, only to get placed into the big scary engine and never interact with their loved ones ever again. It is in the hopes of combating the crippling loneliness that is experienced by songs and players alike that I have created something of a romantic matchmaking system for files. After running quite a few tests and consulting my thirteen year old next door neighbor who already has a significant other and makes fun of me for not having one every goddamn chance he gets, I have determined the perfect partner for each and every release that came out either this week or last week. Each pairing is scientifically accurate, legally binding and ultimately inescapable. Let’s view the results, shall we?

Pairing One: asdfmovie song and dr1
Now, before you folks at home start to think that the matchmaking system is lazy just because it paired up the first and second releases together, it would be a wise decision to learn the reasoning behind the system’s decision beforehand. There exists an incredibly strong bond between these two releases, one that is perhaps greater than all others. A desire for wealth, or in this case credits, is what drives these two releases along in life and dictates all that they do. asdfmovie song requires you to pay it the sum of 1234 credits to play, and dr1 forces you to prove to it that you have at least 36,000 credits saved up in your bank account before it’ll even show up for you on the song list. Even though their selfish pursuit of material gains has led both of these once-noble releases irrevocably astray, that doesn’t mean that they have abandoned love just yet. Once asdfmovie song and dr1 are joined together hand in hand they will undoubtedly conjure up an endless amount of new and innovative ways to steal your hard earned credits away from you. It’s a match made in heaven…maybe.
Pairing Two: Öngyilkos Vasárnap and Myriagon
Sometimes bonds can be formed as a direct result of one party requiring something that the other one possesses and vice versa. It may appear to be a selfish move on the surface, but it is nevertheless essential if we wish to live our lives to their fullest potential. Öngyilkos Vasárnap, a more somber selection from eccentric breakcore mastermind Venetian Snares, heavily samples Gloomy Sunday, a song with an associated urban legend stating that many of those that listen to the piece are driven to commit suicide. Myriagon, which is named after a polygon that possesses ten thousand sides, is energetic and playful while at the same time vaguely dark and grim. On the one side we have a release that’s too heavily drawn towards the negative with only a tiny penchant for the positive, and on the other a release that harbors negativity but is unable to grapple with its emotions due to stiflingly false positivity. By taking what the other possesses in excess and using it to balance themselves out, Öngyilkos Vasárnap and Myriagon will be able to richer, more fulfilling lives.
Pairing Three: Snow and In The Clouds
Never in a million years would you have expected to see these two crazy characters thrown together, am I right? Snow, found In The Clouds? Wow, what a crazy connection that absolutely nobody could’ve ever seen coming! However, don’t be fooled: the similarities between these two run much deeper than their names alone. Both are found within the Misc genre, and Snow is not only exactly double the length of In The Clouds but is just shy of double the difficulty too. It’s as if one is mild and the other is spicy, one is cold while the other is warm, or one prefers salad as an appetizer while the other more often than not opts for soup at the onset of their meal. The differing approach to similar foundations makes these two releases great for each other.
Pairing Four: Lorem Ipsum and Introduction
A lone microphone stands in the center of an otherwise barren and darkened stage. A single spotlight falls upon the slender microphone stand as a man dressed in anachronistically Gothic clothing steps out from behind the velvet curtain backdrop and approaches the light. “Think about the world that you deem as constituting your reality,” he begins to say, his voice gruff and noticeably devoid of emotion. “The vocals in Lorem Ipsum and the vocals in Introduction are both done by Vocaloids. There aren’t any quote-unquote real people singing in either of these songs. It’s all computer software– nothing more, nothing less. You think you know reality? Think again.” As soon as he finishes speaking, the man turns away and leaves the stage just as quickly as he had appeared. Only a few seconds of uncomfortable silence are allowed to pass by before the audience begins to horrifically scream in unison.
Pairing Five: Your One and Arsonist
Being picked last when it came to sporting events always hurt Arsonist a fair bit and was probably one of the major contributors that lead it towards turning to a life of crime. The wayward song would often spend its schoolnights staying out late in unsavory areas, painting the town green with its 64th notes and giving authorities a headache with its constant swing steps intermingled with jumpstreams. It wasn’t until meeting Your One, the self-described hardcore tourist from the UK that just so happened to come across Arsonist while it was in the midst of living up to its name, that Arsonist began to change. It only took a few months after that fateful evening for the song to learn about empathy, obtain happiness, and become instilled with purpose. No longer did its creativity get channeled into harmful outlets. At the same time, Your One learned to be less uptight, to sympathize with others and admit when it was wrong. However, out of all the things that these two gained from being around one another, perhaps the most valuable and precious was their everlasting love and unmatched karaoke prowess.
Pairing Six: W and Resistance 4
They say that opposites attract, and there is perhaps no better example of this old adage than in the pairing of W and Resistance 4. W, which is the easiest of this set of releases, would never have come across Resistance 4, which is conversely the most difficult of the releases, had it not been for a chance encounter in FFR Federally Mandated Park #34. Resistance 4 was jumping around like a maniac, kicking up dust with its numerous hands and quads, while W was across the way picking wildflowers all by itself. A sudden and overpoweringly strong gust of wind had blown W’s handful of daisies directly in Resistance 4′s face, something that engendered the file to howl like a frenzied wolf at the top of its lungs. The ever-shy W fervently apologized with a face that was as glowing red as the sun itself, but its words fell on deaf ears. Resistance 4 was helplessly entranced with W’s beauty, so much so that it didn’t even realize until quite some time afterwards that it had uttered its first ever set of somewhat coherent words: “Would you like to go and get, like, a coffee or somethin’ with me sometime or, like, whatever?”
And there you have it: twelve releases and six happy couples. As mentioned before, these marriages are legally binding. Any song that attempts to back out of the future that the matchmaking system has decided for it shall be reprimanded by being thrown into the Punishment genre where they’ll be forced to make awkward conversation with all of the off-sync, half-completed and otherwise incoherent pieces that have laid dormant in the My Creations folder of those who don’t even remember installing Stepmania in the first place. As always, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on any of the new releases either in the comments section of this post or over in the respective topics on the forums. If you wish to throw yourself into the fray and undergo the matchmaking process as well, then you’re unfortunately out of luck because the government has shut down the program due to the so-called “unethical treatment of human specimens.” Everybody behind the program is probably going to go to jail, myself included. Please tell my wife that she was okay in small doses.

Songs of the Week (March 31st, 2013)
Although we hate to admit it, reverting back to the usual Song of the Week format carries along a vaguely melancholic connotation. The past eight weeks of our lives were imbibed with a wide spectrum of emotions thanks to the 8th Official Tournament, but now that the contest has reached its conclusion we are more or less forced to continue on with our everyday lives as per the norm. The fierce rivalries, unexpected companionships, stellar new releases and nights spent ruthlessly pounding away at your keyboard in the hopes of shaving one or two goods off of your best score are nothing more than distant memories now. In addition, both the winners of each division (SallowKnight, arcnmx, beary605, ___________, PriestREA, alloyus and samurai7694 respectively) and plopadop, the person responsible for making the front page posts, have stopped visiting the site ever since the night of the tournament’s conclusion. Since we figure that they’re still out and about celebrating their victory, we will continue on with our regular releases and hope that they will return to us in due course.
Dizzay by Doormouse (Xayphon) – Guru [76] / 3:15 / Funk / Free Jazz Breaks
Go *60* Go by Kid Whatever (Wayward Vagabond) – Expert [64] / 2:52 / Dance2 / Nu Funky Breaks
Spirits by Godspeed (SKG_Scintill) – Master [73] / 2:07 / Rock / Instrumental Rock
The Big Crunch by Danimal Cannon (kommisar) – Guru [76] / 3:29 / Arcade / Chiptune
Turn the Light by tigerlily feat. TAMMY KOOL (bmah) – Very Tricky [41] / 1:58 / Hip-Hop / Electro R&B
Twisted Hide and Seek by championanwar (Silvuh) – Beginner [2] / 1:06 / Classical / Instrumental
Our first of this week’s selection of releases comes to us from an artist that should be no stranger to those that are familiar with the breakcore genre or western rhythm gaming in general. Stepped by IDM aficionado Xaphon, this interesting piece by breakcore pioneer Doormouse blends two genres that at first glance may not have [To all those that still remember my existence, do not worry. My disappearance is but an illusion. I am still here, right beside you in everything that you do. I have found a purpose that gives me strength and fulfillment. If you live your life then I assure you that you will not forget me, for I am all that is. -SallowKnight] makes this a challenge for sure. Throw on your finest pair of sunglasses and pimp walk down to the Funk section if you want to give this one a try.
Next up is a modern take on a song that lives in infamy thanks to one of FFR’s most well known and beloved of predecessors. Don’t let the artist name fool you; Takoyaki, which was the artist attributed to Go *60* Go when it first appeared in the seminal In the Groove 2, is in actuality [It's true that I didn't ask for this outcome, but now that all of the pieces have fallen into place I can say with all honesty that I'm pleased with the results. I'm a part of something bigger, something much grander than I ever thought existed. I'm happy in my role, so you should be too. Just remember that you are never alone. Thank you for everything. -arcmx] so perhaps a St. Patrick’s Day release would have been more fitting?
The combination of Godspeed’s music and SKG_Scintill’s steps is not one that is foreign to FFR. In fact, out of SKG_Scintill’s ten in-game files at the time of this post, four of them can claim to be part of this dynamic duo. However, judging by the high amount of praise that each and every one of these files have received, it’s fairly safe to [There's much that I don't understand, both in this world and the one that I was once a resident of, but that doesn't mean that I'm not satisfied. Even without knowing the exact antecedents that led to this outcome, there nevertheless exists a solid understanding within me towards the purpose that I now serve. I hold a universal truth. That's why I'm happy and will continue to be for eons to come. -beary605] surprise that the Rock section is the home of this piece.
Speaking of artist pairings that have been proven time and time again to work well with one another, this week’s second veteran release is the sort of addition to the FFR roster that one would come to expect from veteran stepman and lover of all things chiptune kommisar. Danimal Cannon’s The Big Crunch stays true to its name as it tests players with dense and speedy jumpstream, colorful [The old Gods grew tired of their positions and thus a necessity to replace them arose. This is what I believe. It may not be entirely correct, but it is what I hold close to my heart. There is truth in everything that exists, from the lakes to the trees to the empty space that separates us all. I am that truth now. Thank you, everybody and everything. I will serve you well. -___________] of bleeps and bloops then check out– yup, you guessed it– the Arcade section.
If you ever happen to come across a song with a title that’s almost in correct English but not quite there, then the chances that you’ve stumbled across a bmah file are fairly high. Our next release, Turn the Light, provides all that much more validation towards this theory. Adding to the relatively sparse but continually expanding collection of songs in the Hip-Hop section, Turn the Light is an undeniably funky piece that’s rife with [I don't mean to imply that I spent the entirety of my life up until this point without purpose, but I certainly didn't have all that much of an idea towards what I had been striding towards. The knowledge of what existed beyond the distant horizon was unobtainable until now. The revelations that I have received as a direct result of my position makes me more than willing to accept my fate. Don't worry about me. I'm happy with where I am, and always will be as well. -PriestREA] you know where to go!
Last but not certainly not least we have a release that should be highly agreeable for players that are either just starting out on their arrow smashing journey or want a break from attempting to parse their way through solid walls of cascading arrows. Resident FFR user and active musician championanwar’s Twisted Hide and Seek comes in at a cozy two on the one-hundred point difficulty rating scale, which is in stark contrast [We are one and we are separate. We exist and we do not. There is nothing that we are not, yet at the same time there is nothing that we are. We bring stability, volatility, happiness, sadness, and every possible emotion in between. You will never thank us and you will never bemoan us, for you do not know that we are with you. Even if you are not aware of us, we will always watch over you and everything that you do. We do this because we love you. - alloyus, samurai7694] perfect for anybody.
And that’s it for this week! As always, feel free to share your opinions [Halogen, are you reading this?] or on the comments section of this post. Even though the tournament is over [I know that you won't remember everything in its entirety, but there must be something left in your consciousness that pertains to the two months that you spent in that place.] much to look forward to. If you’re interested in participating, then check out [I don't know why we of all people were chosen, but the simple fact remains that we were. I know that you were only trying to do what you thought was “right,” even if in the end it turned out that it wasn't, so for that reason I can't blame you. Neither of us knew what was happening. Being able to take any sort of action despite our soul-crushing despair, be it positive or negative, is testament enough I think.] so make sure to keep an [I don't need to say that we will meet again when I and the others constitute yours and everyone else's existences. You have your purpose in the world and we have ours. We will serve this plane of existence with the utmost affection until the time comes to begin the process anew. Goodbye, and good luck. -plopadop] definitely stay tuned for that!

The Easter Bunny is on its way!
Our event bunny has conceived an event that will leave many of you spinning, and it is set to start tomorrow at 6 PM server time. Considering some of his past events, it might be wise to prepare your mind and body for serious thinking.
I will say this: if you’re a FFR user looking for support tokens or event tokens without arrow-smashing competition, this might be your yellow brick road.
Our event bunny also likes over-achievers. The first (or only) 100% completion will receive the extremely elusive Vrofl token.
If you’re interested, take a look at the official thread located here! There are a lot of prizes to be handed out for this event.
