Television that makes you think or feel...

Are there any television shows out there that strike you as especially philisophical? Can a show grapple with thoughtful, unpleasant material and still hope to appeal to a greater audience? Does a show have to be widely watched at all to be great?

I'd like to give a nod to 'six feet under'. The characteres are wonderful, and the ideas and problems addressed by the show are presented to the viewer through the characters, not as nebulous abstractions that get worked out in silly monologues. Thankfully, those potentially abstract, debatable realities of faith, homosexuality, family, vocation, love, and the preciousness of life are not softened by any of this. they're made more jarring and worthy of our attention because of it.

Can't resist to reply to this. I've always seen the anime movie "Adolescence of Utena" as just that. REALLY long story short, it's a totally abstract setting that interprets the protagonist choosing to grow up. To explain it all would be way to hard though so I'll just leave it at that. Watch the movie then listen to the commentary if you're interested.

Pi is good, I have seen it like 4 times. I think a good quality TV show is either Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or Harvey Birdman.
