Cutting - misconceptions and facts Posted on: February 4, 2008, at 04:12:22pm -Cutting does NOT mean you are emo. (and likewise: your "emo-ness" is not connected with your cutting) -Cutting does not mean you want to commit suicide. -Cutting is addictive. -Cutting is a way to release stress, anger, or pain. -Cutting feels good due to endorphines in the brain that release during the process. -Most "real" cutters (not dumb emo kids that think it is a way to be cool) hide their cuts very carefully and fear that people will find out about their problem (so if you think you have a friend that cuts, be careful how you talk to them about it). -Many cutters have a low tolerence for pain outside of cutting. -The majority of self-harmers (this covers a wider area than cutters) are between 11 and 25. -1 in 12 or 1 in 15 people in this age group have self-harmed before or are currently self-harming. -Reasons for cutting are various, but the two most popular are stress and dissociation (feeling numb, disconnected, or lost). -Most self-injury reasons are personal to the person involved and hard to explain to others. -Other reasons may include self-loathing (self-hatred), to draw attention (very unlikely in real cutters), sexual release, to feel in control, to make others feel guilty or bad, and/or to punish yourself. -Cutters are people too. Don't look down on them for their way of dealing with pain. Cutting is just like drinking or smoking to deal with stress. |
