Ugh, Poker. Posted on: February 17, 2009, at 09:23:47pm Last time I was in Vegas, the Venetian was running a daily noon $150 tournament that drew about 100 people. Solid tournament, good blind structure, etc. All around well run tournament. So I went there yesterday to enter it and have some fun... only, when I get there, it turns out they're running a 3 week long Deep Stack Extravaganza, and the day's noon tournament is $340 and not $150. I decide to pony up the extra 200 bucks anyway and enter, especially when I find out that there would be 300+ people. And, since I'm a fairly tight player, deep stack poker is more appealing to me than shove poker. Everyone started with 12,000 in chips. 40 minute rounds. 25/50, 50/100, 100/200. Then antes kicked in... 100/200 + 25, 200/400 + 25, 300/600 + 50, 400/800 + 75, 600/1200 + 100, 800/1600 + 200, 1000/2000 + 300, 1500/3000 + 500, etc. Break every 3 rounds, dinner break after round 10. So I play tight the first few rounds until I get jacks in late position still in the first round. Raise to 150. Guy to my immediate right re-raises to 600. He seemed fairly bright from talking to him for a few minutes, so I was already worried my jacks were no good. I call anyway, since it's real early and little extra relative to my stack. Flop comes jack-x-x for top set. I check, knowing he'll put out a continuation bet from his re-raise. He bets 1000. I think for a bit, inwardly giddy, and re-raise to 3000. He insta-shoves and has me covered. I, of course, insta-call... rainbow flow, no straight draw, sitting with top set. He has to have an over pair. And he shows Kings. Trip jacks hold up and I'm up to about 22,000. From there, I go about 3 full rounds (2 hours) without seeing a decent hand, except for getting river'd twice. I'm back down to about 13k and it's now into round 4. I get moved, and show a little strength upon sitting down, but the table is far more active than my first table. Get back to about 25k. Then I go another 2+ full rounds without a single decent hand and am back down to about 17k. At which point, all my waiting finally pays off and I get a string of good hands that hit and see myself around 40k going into the 3rd break, with about 100 people left. I'm a little under chip average, but healthy. Upon returning for round 10, 40 minutes from the dinner break, I get moved to a 3rd table... and get some decent hands that cost me a few grand each, and 1 bad play that costs me 10k. Now I'm down to about 18k at the dinner break, 73 players left. Back from dinner and a poo, we all know that we're the next table to break (again), and with the blinds at 1500/3000 with a 500 ante, I'm going to be eaten alive very quickly unless I make some moves. I push all in with Kings, the best hand I'd seen all tournament, and get no callers. At least that 1 shove got me an extra 9k chips, back to 25k. Then the table breaks. To my 4th table, I get nothing and am quickly back down to 19k, looking for anything I can push with. I get JQo in mid position, and decide that's the best I'll get. Folds around to the big blind who is an absolute hick idiot who I'd played with at another table... who LOVED to protect his big blind. He knows I've been playing tighter than a 12 year old, yet decides to call my 16k all-in raise over his BB with A7o (for 3/4 of his stack, no less). Of course, his A7o holds up and I'm out in 56th. 9+ hours of playing, only 2 or 3 bad plays, imo, hours and hours of nothing cards... and I go home empty handed. That sucks big time. Only the top 27 got paid out. Oh well. There will be more trips to Vegas with more tournaments at the Venetian. I was also at a table with a pro I recognized from TV for about an hour... but I couldn't recall his name for the life of me. Middle eastern guy. -Tass blog. |

Sounds like FFR Gambling stories, only with real currency.
Posted at 9:32pm on February 17th, 2009
Shit I was waitin for you to hit the jackpot but it turns out you got sharked just like the rest of 'em. Oh well better luck next time I know how much of an elitist you are when it comes to games.
Posted at 9:33pm on February 17th, 2009
Wow that's sucks, but I like the comedy in what you were putting in during your bad streaks.
Posted at 9:34pm on February 17th, 2009
337 people were in the tournament... paid out 27 places. bit low, IMO, but even if it had been 36, wouldn't have made a difference for me. of course, i kept second guessing myself after the fact if i should have waited for something better than JQo or not. but i was close to being big blind again, and that would have really eaten in my stack. just sucks to play that long and get nothing to show for it.

I hate losing money. Fuck. Especially when you get fairly deep into a tournament like that and you don't cash. Sucks big time. I've never had any real poker experience...just with my friends and stuff in like 30 person private tourneys, and it pissed me off even then. Can't even imagine getting into a 300+ person tourney and spending $340 to not even cash.
I'll be 21 in May, and going to Vegas as soon as school lets out in June. Can't wait to get some real-time poker action.

play Omaha so that playing tight will win you every time

sucks, bro
Posted at 9:43pm on February 17th, 2009
the subbie funds hath been drained
Posted at 9:47pm on February 17th, 2009
way to turn sub news into your own blog, why do we even pay for this crap
Posted at 9:55pm on February 17th, 2009
then stop paying for it. stop reading it. or stop bitching about it. don't you care about my life? *cry*
Posted at 9:56pm on February 17th, 2009
one of the reasons I'm gonna quit being a sub, pokelda.
Posted at 9:58pm on February 17th, 2009
Lol i find these blogs entertaining actually.
Posted at 10:09pm on February 17th, 2009
It's fun reading about how Tass epically loses money. Sucks though. Life lesson, don't gamble.
Posted at 10:13pm on February 17th, 2009
tl;dr because in my quick glance of the comments... I didn't see anyone say it... though I'm sure someone did...
Posted at 10:15pm on February 17th, 2009
I agree with Dylan. It's better than seeing one subscriber post a month, and seeing the same thing every day. I'd rather have something new to see / read about instead of "2 new songs added" and nothing for 3-4 weeks.
Now, an on topic post.. Sucks about the loss of $340 but it still sounds like it was a hell of a time.
Posted at 10:27pm on February 17th, 2009
wow the middle eastern guy short and hefty or skinny?
Posted at 10:34pm on February 17th, 2009
don't be silly, poke. we paid tass to go to vegas. that's obv what a subbie is for
Posted at 10:54pm on February 17th, 2009
Like i said in the previous newspost, I don't mind it if tass posts about his side projects as long as he makes sure to inform us about ffr updates. This however, serves no purpose for ffr or even flash games even so I can't even fathom why its on the front page.
Posted at 10:55pm on February 17th, 2009
even
Posted at 11:07pm on February 17th, 2009
i would've backed out at the 40k mark...
Posted at 11:09pm on February 17th, 2009
or how ever big money you got up to. i think i mistook seeing 40 mins as 40k lol but still if i got to 1000 i would've even backed out specially for only entering with just $340
Posted at 11:13pm on February 17th, 2009
Argh whatever happened to what happens in vegas stays in vegas.... Or.... Is this organization known as FFR run by a bunch of elves that occupy the area of Las vegas?
Posted at 11:20pm on February 17th, 2009
Dang. I personally wouldn't stick in 340 bucks.. But you sound like you had some fun so hell, that's good to hear. :)
/ignore people flaming -.-
Posted at 11:34pm on February 17th, 2009
neobluedragon, it's not that kind of poker. You don't just 'back out'. In fact, you can't. It's a tournament, so you play until you lose your chips.
Posted at 11:34pm on February 17th, 2009
Hey tass, being a seasoned poker player myself i feel your pain. nh with the jacks, i hate them for personal reasons. Last brick and mortar tourney i played was a little $100 sunday lunchtime tourney @ crown casino (melbourne). Problem was when it started, i was at the tail end of a 26hr cash game session. Made final table as big stack (72k-ish) with blinds @ 2k/4k. I lay down Queens preflop at the cost of 1/4 my stack, (he had aces however and 9's got drilled xD). But in a matter of hands i copped 3 bad beats, 2 of them were 2-outers for runner runner.
At the end of the day, 5th wasn't so bad. But the payout was a lot nicer for top 2. gg tass, let me know if you ever to an australian casino run, i'm there. :p

who keeps upvoting my comments rofl

Dang, that must have been a really rough tourney. I'm not old enough to gamble, but I like to play free money online poker tournaments, and I too, play really tight poker. It sucks to make an attempt at gaining chips when you are card dead. =/
Posted at 1:14am on February 18th, 2009
don't get me wrong... nowhere was i complaining about losing 340 bucks. i wouldn't have entered if i'd get upset at losing it. in the long run, i've made thousands and thousands of dollars playing poker. you won't ever finish in the money at every tournament, or have a winning session every time. getting upset at not winning is a really bad mentality. it was more of the fact that i played for 9+ hours and didn't cash... i've played for 9+ hours in tournaments before, but i've usually won them or finished top 2-3.
---
and to the "haters"... as i said in the previous one... anything i post in my random comments gets put on the main page. i don't have control over it. if you don't want to read it, don't. hit the "hide" button. or don't post about it. or unsubscribe. trust me, your money did not go to me playing in this tournament or me going to vegas at all (i didn't even pay for the trip to vegas... whorli is here for a convention and took me along for my b-day).
Posted at 1:26am on February 18th, 2009
That was a good story, too bad I know nothing about poker.
Posted at 4:32am on February 18th, 2009
Wow you did really good actually. Sure you lost the $340 but you are definatly quite a smart/skilled player. Good luck in fucher tournements. (sorry about the spelling)
Posted at 4:38am on February 18th, 2009
Lawl, quite a night. In a year I'll be old enough to gamble, though since I live in Vegas that would be a bad thing for me to get into it.
Posted at 7:39am on February 18th, 2009
seems like your play the best you could. <3
Posted at 8:29am on February 18th, 2009
I love you TASS. Be my belated VALENTINE!!
Posted at 11:37am on February 18th, 2009
Ugh,D: thats the downside about poker. Too bad you lost the $340. Wish you luck on future Tournaments.
Posted at 12:14pm on February 18th, 2009
I guess i'll never play in a tourney then lol
Posted at 12:31pm on February 18th, 2009
hahaha poor tass.
Posted at 3:46pm on February 18th, 2009
Fail.
Posted at 4:49pm on February 18th, 2009
Sorry about that, Tass :(
Posted at 5:08pm on February 18th, 2009
lol not many other people understand all this... that's a pretty rough beat. QJ isn't exactly a hand you'd want to shove with though, especially if it was a 9 man table. man if only i was 21...
Posted at 5:47pm on February 18th, 2009
The hick idiot made it deep enough in the tournament to still be alive when you pushed, so he's either among the luckiest idiots in vegas or he knew what he was doing. A7 off is probably a pretty loose call, but maybe he was in a desperate position too.
PS let's play poker we'll have a tightness pissing contest.
Posted at 8:05pm on February 18th, 2009
lump: i'm aware, but with the blinds coming in 2 more hands, and getting eaten for 9000 chips per 9 hands... i had to make a move before the big blind hit me. i figured QJo was the best i'd get, and even if i was called, i'd likely have 2 live cards.
---
chaz: surviving != skill. trust me, i played with the guy for 2-3 hours, he was not a good player. if anything, i should have folded because of how overly protective he was of his bb, including multiple donkey calls previously to protect it. i figured given how tight i was playing, the fact that it was 3/4 of his stack, etc... that he'd be willing to give it up. not like it's an amazing hand, about 60-40. he nearly folded, but he was definitely a gambler and loose player, so meh. oh well.
Posted at 12:26pm on February 19th, 2009
Meh, I mean I just figure if he had 4/3rds your stack, he was getting close to desperation too, and if it's just down to his big blind and you, A7o isn't a horrendous call for protecting. Not just that, it's an opportunity to eliminate a player, getting you that much closer to the money.
I'm only playing devil's advocate because whenever I find myself really mad at someone for what seems like an atrocious call, I usually find out later that the guy was the shark of the table and got a read on me.
