Sky Invasion Trailer
Posted on: February 14, 2009, at 01:10:55am

I was asked by Rudy Sudarto (the guy who made Epic War 1/2 and Kingdom of the Wind) to make a trailer of his upcoming game, Sky Invasion. This is what I came up with:

Give me some feedback on the quality of the trailer, please. It's the first one I've made.

I also make tons of flash game walkthroughs in my spare time, if you didn't already know that. You can view this trailer and all my walkthroughs on http://www.youtube.com/tasselfoot

-Tass

  1. 1st lolololololololololol

  2. COOL! 1st!

  3. DAMN!!!!!

  4. thats looks really good for a flash game =D
i mean it's no FFR or anything xD but yeah i'd give it a 10/10 i see nothing wrong with it
    great job =D

  5. i'd like to get feedback on the quality of the video, the editing, how well it works as a trailer, etc. don't care what you think about the game's graphics, looks, etc. any advice/suggestions/etc on how to improve as a trailer maker, plz.

  6. It's pretty impossible to make a good looking trailer for a flash game, especially when there really isn't even a story line. Though as a trailer in general, it gets the point of the game across pretty well, know what to expect when actually going to play it yourself. I guess adding some BG music would be one of the best things to do for a trailer. Not really sure what else to say on how to improve it being I'm no pro at this either >_<

  7. I suggest starcraft 2 demo method. Where the developers play through a lvl of the game while discussing the features.

  8. tera: i took the music from the game... so, there IS music playing.
Android: that is a possibility. except i'm not one of the devs of the game, so it might be a bit awkward. that would have to be something that a dev would tell me he wanted me to do, otherwise i wouldn't.

  9. kfine, more exciting music :<

  10. poorly edited, the transition of the music was so clashy, that trailer made the game look horrible, although it doesn't look bad for a flash game of that sort. it actually looks like u recorded game play and then put it together lmao. i say just get some wicked music, music that may even overexagerate the gampeplay but trailers are all about hard hitting material. As a flash game its best to show the best things about it in the trailer otherwise some lazy fuck will look at it and say no thanks, thats like any other game, etc. So exciting music, better transition, maybe some effects whilst previewing the features the game holds.

  11. appreciate the criticism, froston. as far as transitions... i had them in between clips, but as most are 5-6 seconds long, the transitions cut heavily into the gameplay and took away from the trailer, overall... so i removed them. as far as the music, that's on the developer... i took the in-game music, and wouldn't use music that i didn't have permission to use, so that would limit my selection... in-game music is by far the easiest.
and, i did record my gameplay and put it together. i'm not really sure how else i would go about doing it?

  12. Showing the upgrades or new weapons. Show the menu where you highlight a weapon of choice, then show a piece of game play to show off the special ability of the weapon maybe? I'm liking it though, showed me enough to want to give it a go.

  13. i definately think you should stick with 1 song throughout the whole trailer, NOT a song from in the game (unless theres a really catchy one in the game) but just something fast and fun and stays the same throughout the trailer, otherwise, its fine

  14. that's the thing Fallen... i showed the upgrade screen twice... but it doesn't unlock anything. all the ships and towers are unlockable via level. it's static. so i tried to show off all of the ships in different clips, plus all the towers from the enemey's defenses. it was hard showing my own base being attacked, because it happened so infrequently. the upgrades just make your stuff stronger: increase hp/damage to ships, to towers, increase base hp, faster production of ships, faster towers, and faster gold interest, more gold per kill. those are all the upgrades. very different from his previous games in that way; previous games had unlockables via the upgrade menu, but not this one.
    ---
glad that the majority of the responses are positive, and appreciate the tips. i'll be using them and building to make future trailers better. never going to get it perfect on the first attempt. but this is why i agreed to make the trailer for this guy for free... so that when i st

  15. so that when i start making them for Armor, they'll be of higher quality.
    ---
bolth: noted. as above, that'll be a call for the developer to make going forward.

  16. hmmm well im guessing your main goal was to get people to want to play the game. i would have to say that you made the game look pretty insane which makes me want to try it.

  17. try to add a little bit of a Movie-type trailer too. Instead of showing a 10 second sequence of a ship blowing up put up a 2-3 second screen that gives a very short and captivating explanation of the game feature that's about to be viewed. This will shorten a little bit your fighting sequences and force them to read the text listed and keep em more captivated. It will alow the trailer to have a bit more of a flow.
When I watched it and saw the ship shooting for 7 8 seconds I was starting to wonder what was coming up at the end of the sequence and nothing did.
    To Sum it up:
    - Add some very short captivating/explanatory sequence text screen(can be done in a vid editor).
I'm no expert but I hope I can give you an idea or two to continue.

  18. To add to my above statement, here is an excellent trailor of a game explanation of True Combat Elite that I have played for years
The video does not entirely apply to this game as it is an FPS but if you check out the first scenes it might give you ideas. feel free to watch it all though.

  19. In a trailer. I'm looking for about half a minute of awesomeness. The clips are just a bit too long, there's a LOT of dead time that you could lop off. I wouldn't even bother with that upgrade screens, just show different enemies. Also, for people who haven't played kingdom of the wind, it would be nice to know which base is home and which is the enemies... I'm not exactly sure how you'd do that, though.
Not bad. The game looks identical to kingdom of the wind, though.

  20. Maybe it's just because it's early, but I felt lost through most of the trailer. I feel like adding some text to explain what's going on and to further hype the game might be a good idea. I understand that you don't want to break up the gameplay. Maybe if you can do it professionally enough you can overlay the text over a corner of the screen while the action is going. Like perhaps the style of courier letters rolling out with a blinking cursor.
    Things like:
    "Realtime Aerial Warfare!"
"Unlock New Weapons With Each New Level!"

  21. 1.ya need some script to explain what the game is doing 'cause I have no idea what the hell is going on.
    and
2.create some opening feature that doesn't show the title screen of the game for 5 seconds without anything moving rofl.
    also
    3. if ya already shown it, ya've already shown it. I've seen you went back to the same place over and over again. BOOORING
    and for more frosting
    4. pick some music that remains consistent with the game, i just hear random game music everytime a scene changes!!! wtf adds more confusion

  22. Hey you guys shouldn't be too hard on Tass, I mean this was his first time doing a trailer video. I believe the quality was excellent and overall I think it would make a great trailer.

  23. i agree wif justin. ^

  24. he wanted honest feedback. he got some.
it's opinions like yours that gets things NO WHERE

  25. i agree hurf durf murf wif irish. ^

  26. It's fine, it looks JUST like Kingdom of the Wind though, with the right side and those polygons.

  27. It took a couple views of the video to really understand what the concept of the game was..
I just saw tons of ships flying everywhere and got confused as to which were yours and which were the enemies.. :x
Perhaps making your own intro, or sticking in the intro from the people that made it at the start of it might help? Like, how armor games has their little "splash screen" with their logo before their games. Cept it moves. Which would be a plus for visual appeal. :P

  28. since most of the action occured down at the bottom, I'm assuming the player is the goldish base and you merely have fend off all the stuff that comes from up above. do you get bonuses if the top one is destroyed, if it is destroyable at all. All in all, it's a good gameplay trailer and you took it as far as your limitations allowed you. subtitles would help a bunch in what was going on in each transition, probably before the actual action.

  29. red: the opposite... your base is the top, and you have to destroy the bottom base. seeing as i dominated the game, there was almost no video of fighting going on at the top for me to use.
    ---
for the title screen... i worked with what i had. wasn't given any more.
    ---
    audio, see above.
    ---
for adding text... i definitely can do that for future ones.
    ---
irish, not sure what you meant about "if you've shown it, you've shown it"... the only thing you could say that i showed twice was the upgrade screen, and that was at 2 different points in the game. everything else showed off different areas of the game or different ships/towers. there are 12 levels, but only 3 backgrounds.

  30. Only 3 backgrounds? A game with minimal variety/content deserves a minimal trailer length.
    -
A quick 15 second trailer would be your best bet if you're dealing with so little game.
    -
If you go over the 15 sec mark with this, it becomes very monotonous and mundane. Like the trailer you've shown.

  31. Is there a way to turn music off in the game? Because maybe you can record the game play without music and record in game music if possible that doesn't have any other sounds going on and add the music on top of the whole video later so it doesn't change.
    --
As already mentioned by several others I think text added on top of the video would be a nice addition.
    --
The first clip of the home base doesn't seem to be needed or should have been longer since it doesn't look like anything is happening. I think it would be better to show the base with some units being built like 18 seconds into the video.
    --
I think the select target screen at the end might be better as one of the first clips with you selecting the first chapter. How the target screen currently is just doesn't seem fitting for a trailer.
    --
The video makes me want to play the game, so you did a good job.

  32. I don't know if thi was said yet, but I think you should limit moving the screen up, seeing how choppy it was in places like :16.

  33. I was confused, but great job Tass.

  34. I think it would do more good to refer to it as a preview as opposed to a trailor.

  35. Though Irish was being a bit of a !@#$.. I slightly agree with what he said. But not the the full extent..
Perhaps with a smaller game you need to make the trailer a bit shorter. Get into the mind set of showing each feature quickly, but emphasizing them so that the viewer understands what the feature is. It WAS a bit long.
I know Irish is just being critical, but no need for the harshness man. XD

  36. The game looks amazing! I wanna go try it out. Where to play?
And yeah, the trailer seemed pretty cool, but like think someone mentioned, you should add text and stuff. I dunno what sort of things you would put, but just explain more or less what you do in the game, and describe some of the features.
Maybe not the best trailer in the world, but good enough to get me interested in the game. :p Can't wait to try it out.
