Tales of Symphonia Update (9/16) Posted on: August 29, 2008, at 09:38:28pm You had better be happy, SacredMidnight, becuase I just endured -hours- of laborious, arduous bouts of button pressing in front of my television for this! Ahem. So, after a long, winding descent from the curiously named Fooji Mountains (remind you of a certain landmark?) and a few simple battles with some curiously tinted creatures (remind you of certain monsters?), our glorious heroes make their way to Meltokio (remind- okay, I'll stop), "The Imperial City". There, they spent all of next wekk's salary on pretty baubles and trinkets at the local store, and met up with a charming young man and his... harem? Skipping ahead a bit, apathetic ax-girl Presea (that scene with Genis and the sacred wood was hilarious!) and rambunctious, flirtatious Zelos join the group, adding some much-needed spice to the protagonists, who, frankly, save for Sheena, are in desperate need of it. More on that later. A few trips across the lengthy Tethe'alla bridge (to Sybak and back) later, our favorite outfit of misfits find themselves back atop the Fooji Mountains, facing off against the dreadfully-dressed Pronyma - who must be the easiest boss ever. Which is closely followed by one of the most difficult dungeon puzzles so far: Meltokio Sewers. I still shudder at the amount of times I had to backtrack to figure everything out. The battles against the Fake and the Convict were fairly routine fare (haha puns), though. Next up: sailing the deep blue sea - much to Raine's dismay - in the EC (haha more bad puns)! Okay, as for my impressions on the new additions... Presea is hilarious simply because of her little scenes with Genis - some of the one-liners are priceless! "I've lost all confidence as a man," haha. They are undeniably cute though. Regarding Zelos, I usually don't take to his type of character, but I find him pretty refreshing and irresistible here. I love his carefee attitude, as well as his lively banter with Sheena. Questions, questions, questions: 1) Is there any benefit to raising the number of "stars" on a character's cooking rating - I haven't really been paying close attention to it. 2) Is there any way to "fix" disparities in level in my party - for example, Presea and Raine seem to lag behind the others a bit. 3) Also, what is up with the pellets and figurines? I can't remember for the life of me. |

I need to restart Symphonia to help you a bit better xD.

Don't feel obligated, now.

Yeah, Sword Dancer (if I remember its name correctly, it's been a year) is no pushover. It really IS dealing ridiculous amounts of damage and you really ARE barely scratching it. I highly suggest beating a couple more bosses before you take it on. Beating it right after you pass Ossa Trail is very hard. You know your level at that point?
Keep in mind, though, that if you wait too long to beat it, it disappears forever and anything that comes with a victory over it is lost.

Oh, and I don't know if you knew this or not but if you use a Magic Lens (preferably with Raine), you can see its HP during the battle, and it fills a slot in your monster book for it. Using a Magic Lens can help you gauge your performance over boss battles (or make you really depressed at how much life an enemy has left XD).
Posted at 10:29pm on September 2nd, 2008
Hmm, since i'm going to restart want to have a friendly competition over who finishes first? xD
Posted at 11:04pm on September 2nd, 2008
-Yukari-: Oh, that -really- makes me feel better. My party consists of a level 15 (Lloyd), two level 14s (Genis, Raine), and a level 13 (Colette). How long do you suggest I wait?
My strategy basically consists of using Lloyd as a flesh wall, blasting away with Genis, having Raine stay in the back lines to heal, and using Colette to use items, attack from mid-range, and popping in an Angel Feathers spell every now and then. It's not working very well...
Also, good call on the Magic Lens. After using it once on a monster, will it show the HP of all of its brethren in future battles?
Posted at 11:04pm on September 2nd, 2008
SacredMidnight: Sure. Undoubtedly you'll finish first, since I play at a pretty slow pace.
Posted at 11:16pm on September 2nd, 2008
Level 18 is a fine level to start taking him seriously.
Angel Feathers is an excellent spell to cast. Since Sword Dancer is dark elemented and Angel feathers is light, it does double damage. I recommend putting Colette on "Do Not Move" mode in the Strat menu and commanding the spell yourself using a C-stick shortcut. If you need even more healing magic, you can switch Genis out for Kratos (that's depends on your playing style though).
Magic Lens question: that's a negative. You get to keep the book data forever (Raine records extra data), but in-battle HP is shown only on the particular monster you used it on. So if there are two Rabbits and you use it on one, it only shows that one's HP.

Unless my game glitches again and i have to restart D:.
Posted at 5:01pm on September 4th, 2008
Oh, i'm going to do the same thing you did and keep an update up to where i am in the game. I started school today so i might have less time to be play.
Posted at 8:55pm on September 4th, 2008
Ah, so your up to Palmacosta. Oh, if you haven't noticed already, frequently check any character's moves. If there is a colored one then that means that it's going to learn that move and let's say it's a water move, i suggest you make that char use only water moves until it learns it. As for Raine, her moves will be a bit useful later and she will acquire better moves if i remember correctly.
Posted at 10:38pm on September 4th, 2008
Oh, that's a good thought! I'm not really -that- worried about Raine, since her main purpose is to heal anyway - plus, I just happen to like her character (watching her smack Genis around never fails to bring a smile to my face).
Posted at 11:37am on September 6th, 2008
Oh, how could i forget to tell you! In battles i'm sure you've noticed that you acquire a certain amount of grade. Try to get ALOT of grade because you will need it. Trust me xD
Posted at 7:36pm on September 6th, 2008
Oh? The only use I've seen for grade thus far was in exchanging it for materials for customization... I don't get much of it anyway - sometimes even in the negative values!
Posted at 7:52pm on September 6th, 2008
You'll see at the end of the game ^^;.
Posted at 5:35pm on September 7th, 2008
How did this pass me :O
Posted at 5:45pm on September 7th, 2008
Look more closely.
Also, have any tips?
Posted at 11:19am on September 8th, 2008
Read my random thought XD
Posted at 10:47pm on September 8th, 2008
1) If a character is amore of a frontline fighter (Lloyd and Kratos), I recommend Strike. If a character us more magical (Genis and Raine), I recommend Technical. Colette I recommend Technical as well. Seeing as how the more physical EX Skills lean towards Strike and the more magical EX Skills lean towards Technical, this shouldn't be a problem to put into effect.
2) Don't worry about using techs like Recover. Tech count does three specific things. 1: Allows a "sequel tech" to be learned from the used tech (ex. it takes 50 uses of Demon Fang to learn Fierce Demon Fang); the amount required is always 50. 2: Increases the power of a move very slightly; maxes at 250 uses. Since moves like Recover don't teach anything or have any power (it's a 100% success rate), don't worry about it. 3: Uses a special version of the tech with an elemented weapon with 200+ uses (ex. equip an ice weapon on Colette and use Pow Hammer with 200+ uses and it's Ice Pow Hammer; only works with a few tech
Posted at 10:48pm on September 8th, 2008
*only works with a few techs in the game).
3: Pretty sure that's random.
Sorry about the long comment ;__;

Woah, you did make ALOT of progress. I need to catch up D:. For the moves i'm not really sure there is a way to find out. My demon fang should have upgraded by now, but it didn't. I really don't know why x.x. I just use the moves and if it upgrades then yay~. About Colette i can't really say since i usually don't include her in battles unless i'm forced too. For overlimit i'm not really sure, but i usually get that when the enemy hits me alot. For me it seems that the char i use to fight..which is Lloyd gets a bit stronger. Well that's what i think at least o.o. About Sheena, yeah she's a good char. About the plot twists...just expect ALOT of them. There is one which i won't mention, but i'm just going to say when you reach a certain place choose your actions wisely. That's all i can say for now. If i start playing now (4:34 pm) i will plan on catching up to you ;].

1) There's no way to know in advance.
2) Occasionally an item will come along that's worth stealing, but a lot of items are very generic, even the ones that take a lot of time to steal. You'd have to steal every item from every enemy to really find out yourself.
3) Overlimit prevents a character from staggering when being hit, reduces the amount of damage a character takes, and reduces the amount of time it takes to cast spells. Sheena must also be in Overlimit to summon anything besides Corrine.

Also, I personally feel the Triet boss (the trio of dogs) is one of the hardest bosses in the game, but probably for a similar reason; I wasn't use to the game then. Great job on beating Kvar, he's really tough.
Posted at 10:07pm on September 9th, 2008
You don't include Colette in battles? Considering she was the character I controlled for most of the game (until recently), I'm a little insulted! How do you make do without her damage output - she probably packs more of a punch than anyone else in my party.
Also, I can't believe I never noticed that about Overlimit mode! Is there a way to induce it more frequently?
Posted at 6:02pm on September 11th, 2008
Not really... I got used to having Lloyd as my main, Genis as the magic user, Raine as healer, and Kratos as healer+fighter. I didn't really notice that about Overlimit mode either D:. I think that Abyssion is a hard boss. I think that was his name. I believe you fight him if you do a certain sidequest later in the game.
Posted at 9:47pm on September 11th, 2008
Haha, I don't actually even use Lloyd in my party anymore, unless I have to for storyline reasons.
Posted at 2:59pm on September 12th, 2008
1) Yggdrasill is beatable. 2) I think Colette talking to the dogs is the only one.. but i'm not so sure.. 3) I don't know ._.; . I need to catch up now that i see your in Tethe'alla. Get ready to meet some new and stronger characters. :3
Posted at 4:54pm on September 15th, 2008
Wait, how?! You don't do any damage to him! So, what do you receive for defeating him (in terms of experience, rewards)?
Posted at 9:25pm on September 16th, 2008
Yggdrasill is not beatable at that point in the game unless you cheat.
Posted at 2:47pm on September 17th, 2008
I meant later in the game he's beatable xD. For the stars on the cooking- the higher it is the better the cooking. I think at one point you have a cook-off against the wonder chef, but you don't have to do that. I'm not sure if it's this game or i'm thinking of another one. I'm not too sure about the disparities of Raine and Presea.. I don't use Presea much anymore.. As for the pellets and figurines, they are for customizing, but i have not really seen anyone needing them lately... And btw, yes I am very happy <3. I'll post an update later today or perhaps tommorow.
Posted at 10:32pm on September 17th, 2008
Ah, thank you.
Even though you may not use a character much, don't they still gain experience at the same rate as the other characters?
Posted at 11:17pm on September 17th, 2008
"I've lost all confidence as a man."
Posted at 11:18pm on September 17th, 2008
P.S. To fix extreme level differences, kill off higher-level party members, or equip something that earns a character more experience (you may have to wait until later to get an accessory like that).
Posted at 11:25pm on September 17th, 2008
ahem, sora and riku go back to the islands with kairi. Then king mickey, donald, and goofy too.But at the end they get a bottle with a message in it.Will there be a kh3 soon? o i cant beat shepiroth =( on kh,kh2,kh COM, and FF7
Posted at 6:52pm on September 18th, 2008
Haha, that is one of my favorite quotes from the game, along with "Is your chest the only thing that's well-endowed?"
Oh, I didn't know that killing off characters prevented them from getting experience from battles! That should help a lot.

Update please!
Posted at 12:48am on February 4th, 2009
Unfortunately, I've been playing so much Rappelz that I haven't had the chance to get back into Tales of Symphonia yet, haha. Never fear though, I'll most definitely finish it someday!
Posted at 2:44pm on February 4th, 2009
xD -looks at the someday part- I've been playing FFR again D; and been playing TalesRunner from Gpotato as well. I've also played some Fiesta. Come join me on one of those two! D;
Posted at 5:10pm on February 9th, 2009
Haha, I don't think I have enough time for all of that. One game is more than enough for me, haha.
