Happy Thanksgiving and Happy 10th Anniversary!

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 22nd, 201283 Comments »

The first thing I wanna do is of course wish everyone who’s celebrating a Happy Thanksgiving. I know a lot of you already had your Thanksgiving, so a Happy Belated Thanksgiving to you Canadian folk. I hope everyone has a good holiday and gets to take a break from their busy lives today.

On another note, today we celebrate Synthlight’s 10th anniversary. Now technically FFR has been 10 years old for a few months now, but this site has not. So we decided we were going to wait until Synthlight’s profile turned 10 to celebrate. It’s really amazing to think back over the last 10 years and see how far FFR has come and how it’s still here 10 years later. A lot has happened over the last decade, there’s been FFR relationships (some of which even got married), FFR babies, and we’ve even lost a few good people over the years. The game has changed so much from it’s conception. I’m not sure how many of you remember the old school 2002 engine, but it definitely has come a long way since then. How many of you remember when there was no speed mods, no key setups and av misses? I know I sure do! I remember playing 1x having to screencut and playing with four fingers on the arrow keys. Now we have all that stuff and then some.

Over the years here I’ve made a lot of good friends and I’m sure many others have too. To some people this place may just be “another gaming site” but for a lot of us it’s so much more than that. It has become a home, someplace where we have people we can relate to, and have some fun smashing some keys at the same time. TC_Halogen and I wouldn’t have our daughter had we not joined FFR, same goes for krunkykai22 and ichliebekase. Then there’s nois-or-e who proposed to musical_vampire through a chart here on FFR, now they’re married and expecting a child. Not to mention countless other people who have also started their lives with someone or made a huge life change because of the people they met here on FFR. This place has become so much more than just a gaming site. We’re more like a family. Dysfunctional at times sure, but what family isn’t?

So today is a day that we’re supposed to be thankful for what we have. When it comes to the site I am thankful to all the people that keep it going, even though they don’t earn anything for the hard work they put in. I’m thankful for Synthlight ever starting FFR and keeping it around for an entire decade, all the friends that I have made here, and the users that come here everyday to play or contribute in some way or another. Today I ask that you forget about the flaws that FFR may have, the work that still needs to be done and take a moment to thank the people that have been working so hard to keep FFR going and to bring us new things.

Now what celebration would it be if we didn’t have some special goodies and/or events for you? Well we want you guys to be able to spend today with your families and just be able to chill out today, so we’re going to hold all our event stuff this weekend after everyone’s gotten their fill of turkey and family fun. I will put up one small thing for today for those of you that may not have something going on. I will give 5,000 credits to all those who leave a comment here telling us why FFR has had a positive impact on their lives and what they’re thankful for. I’d love to see what others have gotten out of this site over the years.

So again, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy 10 years FFR!

Songs of the Week (November 17th, 2012)

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 20th, 201217 Comments »

picInformation of the songs released last week and this week.
Depending on which particular version you’re familiar with, the joke entitled “A Man in the Desert” totals in at approximately 10,000 words, thus giving rise to its more well-known title of “The World’s Longest Joke.” At the risk of spoiling the particularly superb punchline, let’s just say that if you’re acquainted with the joke that the ending uncannily relates to the timeliness (or perhaps lack of) when it comes to this front page post. However, such delays should be expected when it comes to this time of year: if you’re like myself or any number of the other FFR denizens who are either actively pursuing or have already achieved a post-secondary diploma, you should know all too well that the tail end of November represents the dreaded era of due dates. Now is the time when libraries and student centers graciously open their doors and invite students to hole themselves up within their depths well into the godless hours of the morning, when professors and teaching assistants alike become swarmed either whenever or if they ever dare to peek their heads out into the public domain, and when the dedicated learner attributes the notion of “fun” in relation to themselves as being as about as likely to occur as going into a cupcake shop and not finding at least one incongruously placed and overly tattooed person working behind the counter. In dire times such as these it’s important to take the occasional break or two, to remind yourself that there does in fact exist a world outside of your dimly-lit study hall, and what better way to be granted relief from the world of bibliographies and multiple choice questions than by enjoying this week’s release of new FFR songs?

C’est la Vie by Protest the Hero (dore) – Very Difficult [51] / 3:29 / Rock / Metal
Louder!! Louder!!!! Louder!!!!!! by The Quick Brown Fox (AlexDest) – Master [70] / 1:19 / Dance2 / Gabba
Lunar Eclipse – a nation of moon #6 by guna (DarkZtar) – Very Difficult [47] / 2:32 / Misc / Instrumental
Pollyanna by Furries in a Blender (YOSHl) – Novice [7] / 0:42 / Classical / Piano Remix
Unicron Barbeque by XACKSECKS (I like it) – Guru [80] / 2:31 / Secret / Dancecore
My Little Pony Medley [Heavy] by Renard (megamon88) – Expert [65] / 1:45 / Skill Token / Happy Techno

We kick off this week’s batch of files with C’est la Vie, a Protest the Hero song stepped by none other dore. If history has taught us anything it’s that the five and a half other files that have been brought to us by the dream team of dore and Protest the Hero are ones that have more often than not been met with polarizing reaction: either people love the files to death and play them over and over into the long hours of the night, or they’re met with such scorn and disdain that players immediately begin weekly contributions to a secret savings account that in time will grant them enough money to cover the cost of flying out to wherever dore lives and giving him a piece of their mind in person. Regardless of your opinion on the song or the steps, players will nevertheless be treated to a high energy, head- and hand-bangingly intense piece in the usual Protest the Hero style. The file features copious amounts of stream and relatively soft layering (save of course for one particular stretch near the end of the file) that should make for a challenging yet enjoyable experience for intermediate players. Veterans can head over to the Rock section if they wish to give this one a try.

Do you have a short attention span? Do you want to hit so many arrows in such a brief period of time that you’ll be left wondering what just happened? Are you up to the challenge of facing upwards of twenty-three notes per second? Have you earned yourself the title of FFR Veteran? Well then indulge your desires with our next file, Louder!! Louder!!!! Louder!!!!!! Created by The Quick Brown Fox, one of Renard’s numerous aliases, and lovingly stepped by AlexDest, this extremely fast-paced file will keep even the most prodigious of arrow-smashers on the edge of their seats. Imagine the faster and denser section of All Y’all Bitches cranked up a notch and without the relief of the softer sections in between and essentially you’ll have LLL. Jumps, bursts intermittent with quick stream runs and a particular malevolent ending that can only be described as the musical equivalent of the song title’s twelve exclamation marks should prove to be a formidable adversary to any player to say the least.

If you’re searching for a piece that’s a bit softer in comparison to the previous two files then you’ll be more than enthralled when you give Lunar Eclipse – a nation of moon #6 a go! Performed by guna and stepped by DarkZtar, this laid-back song bestows the listener with a rather blithe image in their heads, perhaps one of being in and amongst a thick forest in the latter hours of the evening, gazing upwards at radiantly white moonlight streaming through the crevices in the foliage above you. However, rather than lazing around beneath a tree and staring up at the moon like the song may engender you to envision yourself doing, a relatively slow yet lengthy run of technically relevant stream interspersed with the occasional jump, hand or grace note will either provide ample challenge for the novice player or a sublime opportunity for jumpstreaming practice for the intermediate player.

Don’t let the particularly gruesome artist name of Furries in a Blender or the fact that you’re going to be going up against a song that’s created by a Renard alias fool you into thinking that Pollyanna is anywhere near as difficult a file as the majority of FFR’s Renard catalog tends to be. Coming in at only a 7 out of 100 on the new difficulty scale, YOSHl brings us forty-two seconds of blithe, airy piano music that will be enjoyable for even the most uninitiated of FFR players. Check out the very tip of the iceberg that we call the Classical section to give this one a try.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, please welcome to the rapidly increasing FFR repertoire the debut song for musical artist XACKSECKS as well as the debut file for stepartist I like it! When it comes to uniquely spelled Unicron Barbeque, both artists embody the “Go Big Or Go Home” mentality down to a tee: with powerful kicks, very in-your-face vocals and a high BPM on the song side of the spectrum and dense layering, fast 32nd bursts and extended jumptrills and streams on the file side, this file earns its 80 out of 100 difficulty rating with flying colors. If you’re one of the lucky ones who have accumulated 72,000 credits over the course of your FFR career then you can go and check out the Secret section in order to try your hand at this trickster of a file and see if you like it as much as I like it likes it.

Those of you who had seen the [Standard] portion of the previously released iteration of the My Little Pony Medley should have seen this release coming from miles away. Our third Renard release for the week, and the only one that’s actually published under his usual alias to boot, is stepartist megamon88′s answer to those of you who had wanted a little more oompf out of the Standard release from a couple of weeks ago. Unlike its predecessor, the Heavy version of this 8-bit omnibus of songs from the simultaneously beloved and bemoaned television show contains denser layering, both mini and extended jacks, polyrhythms, grace notes, swipes, speedy stream runs and just a light peppering of jumpstream for added measure. Those of you who wish to try your hand at this particular rendition will need to achieve a full combo on the [Standard] version of the chart with nine or less combined goods and averages as well as zero boos in order to unlock the file. Good luck!

And thus ends another week of releases. As always, the previous week’s two veteran files have now been released to the public, so go and play Exotic Matter and Vortex if you haven’t already. Play the files, listen to the songs and leave your opinions or suggestions in either the respective forum thread or in the comments section of this post before taking a deep breath and returning to either the harsh realm of the academic world or the temporarily blissful universe of procrastination.

Reminder: Gamewhore Competition – 5 1/2 hours away

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 16th, 201232 Comments »

At 12am servertime the gamewhoring competition will begin. You all were given just short of two weeks to train yourself for this event. Hopefully you have pushed yourself to having hands, wrists, and forearms of steel. If you want to win one of the ten prizes, you will need to put forth an extreme effort. Being one of the top ten daily keysmashers is only one of the amazing feats that you can do in this competition. If you truly want to hold a place in FFR history and make the top ten all-time, you will need to unlock a true level of patience within. That won’t be the only thing you unlock, though:

What does this mean to you? For the first time ever, a guarantee can be made for the gamewhores: getting top 10 on the all-time daily totals guarantees you the desired Vertex Beta Vrofl token. That’s not even including the other prizes you will win! There are many incentives to shoot for this year, and the players that rack up the highest daily scores will reap the benefits.

You don’t have to sign-up for the Gamewhore competition, but you should make a post in the Gamewhore Competition thread to let everyone know that you’re trying this out!

Songs of the Week (November 10th, 2012)

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 10th, 201225 Comments »

It’s Saturday night and there’s a whole world full of limitless possibilities that are all patiently waiting for you to take the first step towards them. Whether you decide to take full advantage of these opportunities by going out and drowning yourself in cocktail after cocktail until you eventually reach the point that formulating any sort of coherent speech would be nothing more than an act of futility, or whether you take the considerably more relaxing route by opting to stay in and to surround yourself with the objects of your affection, be them physical or otherwise, you’ve nevertheless been granted repose from the drudgery of your everyday life? That is unless of course you have some sort of important engagement to adhere to such as having to go into work or having to craft a lengthy essay that’s due at midnight, in which case the rest of the population will be sure to mourn your plights. If you unfortunately happen to fall under the latter category then try not to feel too down in the dumps, for whenever you return from or finish up whatever it is that you have to do then you’ll have a whole new selection of FFR songs to try out! Hooray! Now then, let’s see what this week has in store for us, shall we?

Can’t Hide Your Love by Kola Kid (Kommisar) – Expert [68] / 2:26 / Arcade / 8-bit Breakcore
Exotic Matter by JT Bruce (Tidus810) – Challenging [56] / 3:00 / Rock / Progressive Rock
Redirected Moonlight by The Leviathan (MarioNintendo) / Very Difficult [51] / 2:02 / Classical / Piano Instrumental
Let’s Go by Blue Stahli (trumaestro) / Standard [30] / 2:31 / Rock / Rock
Vortex by Atomhead (Choofers) – Brutal [86] / 4:06 / Misc / Cyberdelic Flashcore
Korean Madness by TANUKI (_.Spitfire._) – Difficult [44] / 1:45 / Token / K-Core

Our first file of the week can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to the Spaceman file that’s already in-game. Much like its predecessor, Can’t Hide Your Love is also an intense chipbreak song that’s by Kola Kid and has been lovingly stepped by chiptune aficionado Kommisar. Those of you who have played the FFR Community Pack’s Spring 2012 edition should recognize this file, especially if you played it on Stepmania 3.9 or lower. The song itself is quite abrasive and the steps do a superb job of emphasizing the in-your-faceness as well. Fans of brief spurts of moderately dense jumpstream and both the extended and mini variety of trills should have a blast with this file, while those who either dislike or downright loathe said patterns will perhaps turn over a new leaf after giving this song a try.

The next of our files, Exotic Matter, marks Tidus810′s fourth in-game file as well as the very first for artist JT Bruce. This particular instrumental piece is relatively eclectic, featuring very few instances in which a section of the song will repeat itself more than once, if at all for that matter. Make sure to enjoy them before they fade away into nothingness. Tread lightly in your sightreads, for several tricky patterns ranging from 32nd staircases to the occasional mini-jack and even a gsurpriseh ending may catch you off guard and prove to be detrimental to what may have once been a flawless or nearly-flawless run. Veterans can find this bad boy in the Rock section, and those users who aren’t veterans just yet can longingly stare at Rock section for a week until it magically appears for them.

Don’t be fooled by The Leviathan’s particularly imposing moniker: Redirected Moonlight (FFR Cut) is actually quite a blithe and airy piano instrumental. Resident stepartist and simfile judge MarioNintendo employs his usual technically apt style when it comes to working with piano songs and has once again created a file that you and your family will be sure to enjoy time and time again. However, make sure you don’t come in thinking that just because you’re facing a mid-difficulty piano file that you’re only going to be in for 8th notes and the occasional 16th run or grace note to try and trip you up. Patterns as varied as can be work together to build up to a climactic jumpstream run that is admittedly quite satisfying to hit. Adopt your finest piano virtuoso persona and head on down to the Classical section if you want to give this one a try.

The next song in our roster sounds like it would make for the perfect backdrop to a scene in a movie or television show that features a massive fifty person brawl inside of a seedy bar that’s out in the middle of outskirts of town. Songs with headbanging vocals and powerful guitar rifts aren’t usually featured in rhythm games outside of Guitar Hero or Rock Band all that often, but Blue Stahl has managed to create a piece that is able to transcend boundaries and makes for an enjoyable arrow-tapping experience. Let’s Go, stepped by the one and only trumaestro, features minimalistic layering that should be agreeable with beginners and experts alike. Let’s Go to the Rock section (*cough*) and give it a try, shall we?

Continuing on in our FFR Community Pack to FFR itself tradition, Choofers has reworked his Summer 2012 file of Atomhead’s flashcore song Vortex so that all of you lovely folks at home can enjoy it wherever there’s an internet connection and a keyboard. Much like an actual vortex, the song itself is dark and foreboding yet at the same time brimming with energy and life. At times the listener is made to feel as if they’re suspended in an endless void, floating in an darkened abyss that’s far removed from humanity, while at others they’re made to feel as if the universe along with all of its inhabitants are whizzing past them at the speed of light. Intense distortion and glitchy bursts of percussion and rough noise act as auditory epileptic fits to give the song its high intensity and resulting 86 difficulty rating. If you’re a Veteran and feel up to the challenge of tackling colorful bursts and other difficult stepfile shenanigans, descend downwards to the depths of Misc and face your destiny. If you like what you hear and want to imbibe yourself with more experimental electronic music as well, check out Atomhead’s other works at http://www.entity.be/undacova/.

Our final song in this week’s slew of releases is Korean Madness. Rather than being about some sort of disease hailing from Korea that forces people to rip off all of their clothing and run into the streets screaming the lyrics of their favorite SNSD song until a passing motorist puts an end to their suffering, Tanuki instead brings us a much more cheerful and upbeat remix of the synonymous viral video for which the song derives its name. The file, which is brought to us by the master of all things ending in -core himself _.Spitfire._, is fairly straightforward and shouldn’t pose too much of a threat in your AAA’ing, FC’ing or passing endeavors, save of course for one minor detail. If you yearn to discover what this detail actually entails then you’ll have to unlock the token.

By this point in time you’re probably asking yourself something along the lines of, And what, pray tell, are the sorts of rigorous trials that I’ll have to undergo in order to unlock this Korean Madness file of which your speak? Will I have to AAA Starry Sky over and over until I either get mad or go mad? Will I have to play every song that’s made by either a Korean artist or stepartist in a row? Will I have to use the a=1, b=2, c=3 code to achieve a score of 11-15-18-5-1 on any given song so that I can spell out KOREA? Will I have to move to Korea, get a career there, start a family and live a prosperous life for at least twenty years before an official FFR representative comes to check on me and awards me the token manually? Well, luckily for you, nobody at FFR is mean enough to incorporate such demonic skills token requirements as those. In fact, the file in question isn’t even a skill token to begin with! Korean Madness is the first normal token to be released since Sicilian Sun was incorporated into the site almost four years ago. If you wish to unlock this newest addition to the normal token repertoire then you’ll have to do a bit of searching around the site. Might I suggest somewhere that’s apply named in the spirit of the song itself?

That’s it for now! As always, feel free to drop a line in either the comments section of this page or in the Songs of the Week thread. If you haven’t already, you can also enjoy and share your opinions on the past week’s two Veteran files, Alchemy and Tokimori Uta, as they have now been released to the public. Keep in mind as well that there’s a Gamewhore Competition that starts at midnight server time on Saturday November the 17th. Those of you who are able to get the highest grand total score in the course of twenty-four hours will get the chance to be adorned with lavish tokens and bountiful credits, and those of you that fall a bit shy of the top three spots will still have fun anyways.

Gamewhore Competition – Coming November 17th!

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 5th, 201216 Comments »

Some of you gain pleasure by getting the best scores that you possibly can on certain songs. Some of you get pleasure by playing different styles. Some of you get pleasure by handicapping yourselves because you’re so sick and tired playing the same range of songs, over and over again.

…then, there’s that special group. This special group gets pleasure by brutalizing their own hands, potentially playing the same song for upwards of 8 to 10 hours, just to watch a number climb higher, and higher. Rather than grouping you all as the masochists that you are, I’ll consider you all as people that have incredible patience. How you guys do this does not matter, though. What matters is this: some of you will give your keyboards their yearly beating in a single day. That day is November 17th.

The next Gamewhore Competition is coming soon. To make it fair for those of you that haven’t been graced by the presence of Shashakiro’s amazing Vertex BETA Vrofl file, Vrofl will be disabled for this competition! There will no longer be unfair advantages for those who shouldn’t be utilizing them in the first place. You lunatics will have until November 17th to prepare your mind, body, fingers, and your surroundings. Grab the mini-fridge, load it with all of the energy drinks you’ll need for this endless climb to the top of the daily score boards, and brace yourself for a day that will require you to be on your computer as if your life depends it (that is, if you want to win).

For all the details check out the thread here!

Songs of the Week (November 4th, 2012)

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 4th, 201218 Comments »

Depending on where you live in the world, yesterday evening possibly marked the end of daylight savings time. Although most people aren’t going to argue against being granted with an additional hour of sleep, the fact that the average length of any given day has begun to markedly shrink is something that the majority of the population will surely find fault with, unless of course you’re one of lucky ones that are secretly nocturnal. I’m not sure about you, but I certainly find it depressing that once five o’clock rolls around the sun has already been extinguished and the day has come to a premature conclusion. However, rather than moping around in pitch black darkness, you should rejoice as it’s finally time for this week’s batch of new songs!

[Nov. 4th Released Songs]
R176 v2 by Cranky (MrPopadopalis25) – Master [71] / 2:15 / Skill Token / Happy Hardcore
Alchemy by G5 Project (SKG_Skintill) – Expert [66] / 2:06 / Rock / Instrumental Rock
Rarity Attempts 400 Dresses (LOOMING MIX) by Foozogz (megamon88) – Master [75] / 2:33 / Dance 2 / Breakcore
Tokimori Uta by felys feat. Aki Mizawa (bmah) – Difficult [46] / 1:53 / Misc / Vocal Artcore
With a Cherry On Top by flashygoodness (Reshiram) – Light [22] / 0:47 / Misc / Lounge

The first of the week’s releases should be a familiar one for those who have played the Summer 2011 iteration of the FFR Community Pack series. R176 v2 is an updated version of the original file by Exag0n that, at the time of this post, is five years old. The song itself is eclectic just as most of Cranky’s songs tend to be, featuring quite a few variations in terms of structure that should keep those players that find themselves afflicted with short attention spans relatively engaged. The file itself contains a respectable number of hands, quads, 8th jacks, brief jumpstream runs and other challenging patterns that players will either enjoy or despise. In order to unlock this file you must pass R176 (located in Dance 2) with 176 misses, 176 boos and 176 or less combined goods and averages. Unless you’re a prodigious arrow-counting savant, you’ll probably want to make use of the Velocity engine’s “Show PA Count” feature in your unlocking endeavors.

Our next file is a heart pounding, guitar-heavy song by G5 Project that has been brought to us by veteran stepartist SKG_Skintill, who at the time of this update has been single-handedly responsible for bringing all three of FFR’s G5 Project files to fruition. Don’t be fooled by this file’s relatively slow BPM: lots of technically stepped guitar solos that feature all the colors of the FFR rainbow are sure to prove to be challenging regardless of whether you’re aspiring to AAA, FC or simply pass the file. If you’re a Veteran then feel free to mosey on over to the Rock genre to give this one a try; otherwise you’re going to have to wait a week.

Next up we have a My Little Pony breakcore remix for you to smash your keys along to. After reading the previous sentence you’re more than likely either jumping for joy and praising the omniscient Brony Lord for bestowing you with another MLP remix, tearing off your shirt and angrily screaming at your computer screen while attempting to quench the vomit that’s creeping up your throat, or finding yourself so conflicted that all you can do is crumple down onto the floor and solemnly weep for hours on end. Regardless of your opinion on either the file or the song, Rarity Attempts 400 Dresses (LOOMING MIX) is going to pose a considerable challenge regardless of your skill level. A fast BPM combined with a copious amount of 32nd bursts, jump jacks and the occasional trill or two may result in self-inflicted hair loss. Please direct all fan mail and/or hate mail to the song’s artist, Foozogz, or the stepartist, megamon88.

After three relatively difficult releases, bmah brings both us as well as our fingers a bit of much appreciated relief with Tokimori Uta, a soft piece by felys feat. Aki Mizawa. Novice to intermediate players that are looking to improve their jumpstreaming abilities should be satisfied with this file’s relatively slow BPM and occasional jumpstream runs, some of which featuring the odd hand or two. If you’re proficient in Japanese or enjoy pretending that you are then feel free to sing along with the relaxing lyrics of Aki Mizawa. Like Alchemy, Tokimori Uta is the second of this week’s Veteran releases and will be released to the public in a week’s time.

With an aptly fitting title to round out this batch of releases, our final file of the week is With a Cherry On Top. Much like flashygoodness’ other two in-game songs, players will be done and over with this file before the minute is up. Reshiram’s usual penchants for all things colored, including his now infamous usage of white notes, are employed here as well. Although only coming in at a 22 out of 100 in terms of the modern difficulty scale, a healthy dosage of grace notes will be sure to keep anybody on their toes. If you enjoy the file, you should consider also taking a gander at the short animated film “A Cake for Cherry” from which the song itself hails.

And that’s about it for now. For those of you who have yet to earn yourself a fancy FFR Veteran title, last week’s veteran-only songs Internet Heroes and Colibri have now been released to the public. Give them a try if you haven’t already. Also, while you’re at it, consider taking a swing by this iteration of the Songs of the Week thread and share your thoughts, both positive and negative if applicable, on this week’s releases with the rest of the community. Both song artists and stepartists alike highly value your opinion on their works irrespective of whether you’re a well-known FFR guru or somebody who has only played the game once or twice beforehand. Have fun, and try not to let the oppressive darkness brought upon by conclusion of DST keep you down!
