Songs of the Week (September 29th, 2012) + FFR’s first StepCon
Hey guys! It’s that time of the week again. However, this week comes with an announcement of a new event, in addition to the songs of the week. We’ll talk about that first.

Autumn Insomnia Session is one of our two veteran song releases this week. A very popular song by Benn Jordan (The Flashbulb, as FFR knows him by), Autumn Insomnia Session takes a step away from the extreme sampling and forcefully paced (and sometimes glitchy) IDM-esque style, and brings together a much smoother drum n’ bass track with realistic sounding drum samples and fills. Don’t let the relaxing melodies and structure fool you though, this chart packs a pretty decent punch with a rating of 67 on our 100 point scale. Stepped by samurai7694 and Wayward Vagabond, there’s a good mix of technique in this file. While a good majority of the harder sections mostly lean toward some brisk stream (106 BPM 32nds to be exact), a few mini-jacks and some slower swing are both present. For those of you who are rebels and still refuse to use the extremely convenient song list, this song can be found in the Misc genre.
Connect (HOUSE SOUL REMIX) is the second of our releases for this week. As the remix specifies, the track falls in the house genre — however, it’s also very energetic. Because it features a very active vocalist, Connect actually carries the illusion of sounding considerably faster than it really is. I’d like to write more about the song, but the lyrics are Japanese and I know nothing about the artist, so I’ll get to the chart specifics. Connect (HOUSE SOUL REMIX) is charted our busy game manager and simfiling connoisseur bmah, and it ranks at a 54 on our new scale. While the only runs at 128 BPM, the chart is respectably layered, featuring a large amount of very short jumpstream sequences with jumps following anywhere from one to three sixteenth-note intervals apart. This song can be found in the earlier sections of Dance 2.
Next, we have Galaxy9 by rhythm gaming mastermind Kyle Ward (under the KaW alias). Kyle Ward is very well known for his large contributions to modern rhythm gaming – in addition to providing rhythm gaming communities with large quantities of steppable music, he’s also stepped a few charts in the official In The Groove games. Galaxy9 is not very well known under its current title – however, regular In The Groove players might recognize the second half of this song as the music you hear during the high scores screen. bob bob brings us the chart for this memorable song, and it lands on a difficulty rating of 40 on the new 100 point scale. The simfile doesn’t present much layering – it actually plays like a more old fashioned file, following a few instruments at once without doosting layering unnecessarily. This can be found in the later area of the Dance genre.
May the Triforce Be With You is another song by Chilean VGM band ThePlasmas. Similiarly to our other ThePlasmas songs, this song moves at a reasonable pace and carries a very harsh but strong sound to it. In this particular rock rendition, we get a taste of the Corneria theme from a very important game to a lot of us (and for those of you who don’t know Star Fox… I’m so sorry). It has come to my attention that I completely mixed up two games, with no real reason because those songs sound TOTALLY different. HURRRRRRRR I’M DUMB. A great composition and performance of this song comes with a high price to a lot of people on FFR, and that price is difficulty. Sitting at a 68 on our new scale, this song could be a very intense Otaku Speedvibe [Oni] unlock for some of you guys. This song, like all of the other ThePlasmas songs, is charted by woker-X. The rating of this file is justified by some pretty rough 16th jumpstream, occcasionally interrupted by triples mid-stream. If you aren’t intimidated yet, it’s somewhat quick, running at 170 BPM. Being that this is a remix of a very popular video game theme, it sits in the Arcade genre.
EDIT: I’m a moron and completely mixed up two songs — credit to igotrhythm for pointing out my stupidity — the Corneria theme is completely different and I’m totally looking at the wrong game right now. For those of you who haven’t played Zelda II (The Adventure of Link), I’m so sorry!
But wait, there’s more! The video game tracks don’t start yet — Protodome makes a debut on FFR with On the Origin of Species (Evolution). Take a quick trip to somewhere in the Johto region and catch your breath. On the Origin of Species (Evolution) appeared on a free album titled “The Missingno Tracks”, a 28-track album collaboration between multiple OCRemixers, based on the theme of Pokemon. At 100 BPM, this song is way more relaxed than the more furious Triforce. On the 100 point scale, it sits right at the middle with a rating of 50. The file does require some attention to technique, as it has a little bit of everything in it. Credit to this simfile goes to Tidus810, who seems to be catching his stride in simfiling and is slowly becoming a resident FFR simfile artist. Keep up the great work. Just like May the Triforce Be With You, this song can also be found in the Arcade genre.
The release is concluded with Syntax, a very different sounding xKore track that also happens to be our second veteran song of the week. xKore is very well known for intense drumstep or pounding dubstep (see: Magnum or Never Enough?), but this song drifts away from that. Syntax has a very omnious introduction that leads into a filtered percussive buildup, and just when it feels like it’s going to have this incredible drop… something else happens. I can’t even think of a way to describe this song — it does have the typical bass, but the choice of synthesizer for the melody makes it sound more like a puzzle or thought than an actual drop. Faster than your typical dubstep track at 153, simfile artist/judge 00Razor00 utilizes some moderate layering and bits of broken jumpstream to give you a file that sits at 56 out of 100 in difficulty measurement. Also look around for some very tasteful (or tasty?) colored note usage. One last thing though: this file is in the Secret genre, and you’ll need 6,800 credits stashed on your account to play it.
For those of you that were waiting patiently for last week’s veteran songs, Danzai Yamaxanadu and Intersect Thunderbolt are now accessible for everyone on FFR. Have fun!

Connect is the opening song to Madoka Magica, the most popular anime of 2011 (and to date), it’s practically running japan’s anime industry now. The original song is sung by Clarice, a duo of apparently middle school girls who are among Japans best up and coming artists and remain one of the most prolific artists currently in the industry, making many opening songs for very successful anime and pop chart hits. My personal fav of theirs would have to be Nexus and their collab with Supercell kimi no shiranai monogatari
