Songs of the Week and Weekly Update 4/1/2023

Posted in FFR News, Flash Flash Revolution, Song of the Week on April 1st, 2023

Welcome to the first post of April! With another new season comes our bigger seasonal update with difficulty changes, a new leaderboard season, an engine update, and some other big news!

FFR Engine v1.5.0

Starting with a new engine update, a quick rundown of what’s coming to the engine is as follows:

Local File Browser
- Local file browser for playing .sm / .osu / .qua files.
- For those that have used the AF2021 engine, this is the same song selector, but is limited to just FFR style charts. (4K, No Mines or Holds)
- There’s a potential desync issue when using Isolation in combination with this, am looking into it.

Song Selection Tags and display toggles:
- Legacy
- Explicit
- Unranked

Reworked Receptor Code:
- Speed Scaler (0.25x – 5x)
- Unify Animations
- Per Judge Score Color and Toggles

Song Rates:
- No longer requires reloading the song when changed.

As with any engine update, you can find it over on our downloads page, and report any issues over on Github.

Season 7

Season 6 has concluded with just over 250 participants this time around. Season 7 has begun and will last until the end of June. Participation badges for Season 6 will automatically be added soon for those that met the requirements for them.

Difficulty Updates

The difficulty changes this season can be found at the usual location of our contested difficulty spreadsheet. In addition to the list of difficulty updates coming out for the new season, we have something a bit different that is happening with a short list of files. These files in particular have a severe difficulty spike, and as a result are frequently brought up for difficulty discussion, with enduring disagreement about whether the files are overrated, underrated, or should be moved to 0. Specifically, these files have a singular difficulty spike that is 1) ~5 seconds or less in duration and 2) 15 or more points more difficult than everything else in the file. We determined that these files are not quite as extreme as other files currently rated 0, and consequently they will be retaining their numerical ratings but will be unranked. This means they will no longer grant AAA equivalency or figure into global or seasonal skill ratings. You’ll be able to identify them in the new engine update by the gray difficulty number on the song selection screen.

The files affected by this change are:
R/\IN
DubstEpic Symph
Entrance [Deemo Cut]
Etude Op. 10, No. 9 in F minor
For FFR
Runny Mornings (SGX Mix)
Jettison

Judgement Updates

On the judgement side of things we have a change in pace. We’re going to temporarily close submissions once the 16th Official Tournament batch closes at the end of April. We’ve built up quite a backlog, and will need to focus on getting OT files judged once that batch closes. There has not been a date set for when when the next batch will open, but we will provide an update on that as soon as it has been determined. The main factors will be how quickly judging proceeds through the current backlog and the quantity of files in the queue.

New Releases

As for the song releases today, we’ve kept this as a secret for awhile now. It took a bit of wrangling with some labels on our founder’s end, as well as a contract to only dedicate a very, very small percentage of his time towards being present on FFR. It doesn’t make much sense to us either, but it got some results!

To start out this month, all of our releases will be new musicians! These were extremely hard to get permissions for artists you may have heard of. As always, check out their socials below! Thanks, Synthlight!!!

  5. Cheers,
    Synthlight

  6. -Mariah Carey Fkkking Dies is actually a legit masterpiece of a meme mashup, great jokes and if it weren’t for the ending I think the actual chart is quite enjoyable too. The ending is funny but yeah a little stupid 7/10
-Space Oddity was a good taste of meme charts for the beginners. Kinda a bop? Way better than I expected, wp dosslar 8/10
-Rap God was unimaginable garbage, didn’t even make me smile, just stop 0/10
-Flames! was a fantastic mashup. Loved the song and the chart was bouncy and fun. Clean up the chart a little (and smooth out the poly section of the solo ) and I would legit want this on FFR. 9/10

three out of four ain’t bad, good event!

    Cheers,
    Synthlight

  7. why does david bowie look like that

  8. -Rap God was unimaginable garbage, but it made me smile, well done 10/10

  11. i fucking hate this event, 10/10

  12. Thanks, Synthlight!!!

  13. If Entrance Deemo Cut is removed from ranking because FFR can’t jack, files like bippity Boop or w.e. should equally be removed for having shoddy at best one handed trill placements. I’d understand if say My Fxxkin Desire For You was for sync issues, and having far too much backloading but not Entrance lol Entrance is a backloaded file that frankly any player who can AAA it should expect that type of ending based on the music and foreshadowed structure.

I’m mad because it’s one of my better works, that I was forced to nerf, wait an elongated time to get in game, and FFR’s current systems make playing it a waste of time now. Thanks for that. I thought antipa tokens were the most useless thing in FFR, but man after years, finally a contender washed forward.

  14. Was pushed forward*

Mobile posting. Good call from me.

  15. But LuzeriA isn’t a new musician

  16. Rest in peace David Bowie, you would have loved Mariah Carey F**king Dies in a Multigenre Death Loop

  17. Xelnya, if I understand the situation correctly, Entrance was not unranked due to the quality of the file or as a commentary on its playability, but rather due to how the difficulty is presented. I think its fair to say that most of the file (outside of the jack section) is free for a low FMO file, anyone thats at least upper d3 / low d4 should be able to handle it with ease. It, like jettison, is a contender for being massive outlier equiv due to its 1-dimensional difficulty via the jack spikes.

If Jettison and Entrance are unranked, I also believe Aim Anthem should be unranked as well.

(Please note that all of this is just my interpretation of the implementation of the system, what I had to say about it could be ill-informed or outright incorrect.)

  18. I so wish Space Oddity and Mariah Carey would stay as unranked joke songs. So fun lol

  19. The difficulty is a scale up, not a short spike. You literally do a deviation of the ending several times before you get there. It’s a 4 section set of long jacks, rather than two short ones you do consistently. Not to mention compared to other files on the list there isn’t a “spike” in NPS, it goes up by 2 for a short time, compared to many others. Another example, even again from my own work, is Sis Puella Magica.

The file should still be ranked based on an actual reasonable look at the file. The team needs to retake a look at this.

  20. Trying to be secretive a see.
Song style “free jack equiv” hahaha
