It’s About That Time Again. New Server on it’s Way.
Most of you remember last year when we set out and secured financing for a rather large server to ease the growing pains around here at FFR. Well, that time is upon us again. I have found myself working longer and longer days just to keep our beast of a server load balanced. We have now ordered another, more powerful server that will be used exclusively for the database side of FFR. This baby will have 4 cores of the latest Opteron AM2 socket CPUs, another raid array built with 15k rpm drives and 16GB of ram all in a nice 1U rack again.
The new 1U rack last spring allowed us to double our traffic. We are hoping for similiar results again with this machine. This means more features for the site like 100% realtime siggy’s, more reliable server, faster retrieval of records and most importantly it allows us to work on the site and games more and watch the server less.
We are also going to be switching over from our 800×600 site size to a more comfortable 1024×768 size. This will allow us to put more information above the fold on the page so that you don’t have to scroll around as much. It also allows for an additional ad on the right side. (believe me, we need it).

I like the layout, it’s pretty sweet. Can’t wait. With this new server does this mean that all of the non-recorded scores will be more reliable to record? Because it’s been getting really annoying lately.

definitely, you have to realize that anytime we have to restart the database or web server, that could take 10-15 seconds. In that time up to 100 games of FFR could be played and lost. We have outgrown ourselves at a pace that we didn’t expect. This is good though right?

I like the layout at the top, especially, where everything is smaller, and our statistics for games played, etc. are listed. Can you perhaps change the order of the Sponsors and the profiles/forum posts?

yay new server!!
hopefully FFR’s R1 page loads a bit faster during the prime time of the day, and MP be at least somewhat less laggy.
But for some of us that like 800×600 or forced to it (I personally like 1600×1200+, but school has 800×600), you should keep one or two mirrors in 800, just so people can adjust at their pace, I hated various sites because my screen before couldn’t go past 800.

I’m liking this layout alot more,
Ontop of that, A new server would help out alot =)
Make sure to cram the ads in though..
I can’t even begin to imagine what the costs of running a site like this would raise to be.

A few comments:
-(In Firefox at least) the top banner is misaligned to the sides.
-The top banner looks weird in the forums. I’d personally use a different one for the forum. Also, fix up the CSS on the forum and make it so the banner doesn’t have that border around it because it’s a link.
-Give the forum layout a facelift and make it match that of the rest of the site!

i always update hardware components in leaps and bounds ” , its defenetly the most cost effective way of doing things .
having said that , if i were you guys i would hold out until intel’s conroe and kentfield chips verge into the server market , wich they have already got the process under way
amd is dead , atleast for the next year or so .
reality – conroe up to 42 % faster than amd, -kentsfield even faster . either way you guys rock
