10th Official FFR Tournament – Round 8: FINALS

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on November 20th, 2014

I am literally the best ever at Photoshop.

Here we are at the finals: down to our final three contenders in each division!
Since it’s the last round, our finalists from each division and the charts they will be playing deserve a special front page shoutout:

[D1]
Scrambooch by Cloudspires

Stepartist: Silvuh
Difficulty: 56
Starlight_Pwn-3, funiax, and NomadSix are our three D1 finalists, set to battle it out over the next week on Scrambooch. The song is an upbeat chiptune with a tricky swing rhythm throughout, and the chart brings some of the densest arrow patterns D1 has seen yet.

[D2]
Quad Queens by D.J.Nero

Stepartist: hi19hi19
Difficulty: 64
IwasAsquidOnce, Coldreaver, and alphabet123456 are the select few that have made it to the end in D2. The sounds of horn fanfares, snare drums, and blistering fast piano arpeggios will accompany D2 competitors as they each attempt to claim the gold medal.

[D3]
Chronostasis by LeaF

Stepartist: ilikexd
Difficulty: 74
BRZF, Xtreme2252, and DJzAIKz are the three from D3 who have put themselves above the rest. Their finals song is quite the chameleon, shifting from drum ‘n’ bass to dubstep to delicate piano harmonies to everything in between- and the file reflects that diversity. Be ready for anything!

[D4]
Candy Crack Curtain Call by t+pazolite

Stepartist: DarkZtar
Difficulty: 80
Zerkrome, dha, and ShadowDueler97 have made it to the podium in D4 this tournament, and the song they will be playing to determine the order in which they will stand is quite intense. In typical t+pazolite fashion this song clocks in at 240 bpm, so D4 will need to bring everything they have to tackle tough patterns at this blistering pace.

[D5]
The Labyrinth of Skadi by Blitz Lunar

Stepartist: hi19hi19
Difficulty: 86
rayword45, lurker, and hi19hi19 are the last three standing in D5. They will be battling it out to the sounds of Blitz Lunar’s trademark technical chiptunes, on a unique and exciting file featuring copious amounts of jumpstream and fast burst patterns at 225 bpm for over 4 minutes straight.

[D6]
Serious Shit by The Quick Brown Fox

Stepartist: ilikexd
Difficulty: 91
African Anger, Lambdadelta, and _Zenith_ are our final three from D6. Setting a new record among public FFR files for average arrow density, Serious Shit is absolutely a file that lives up to its name. The 230 bpm sounds of Renard’s speedcore will set a perfect backdrop for the final showdown in D6.

[D7]
Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu -Gekijouban- by cosMo

Stepartist: ilikexd
Difficulty: 97
EtienneSM, samurai7694, and shadow 1800 are the last three standing in D7. To list just a few things, their finals chart features devilishly patterned 200 bpm 32nd bursts, a stream section that speeds up to 343 bpm 16ths, a few dense walls of 12th jumps at 240 bpm, and countless other finger-melting patterns. Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu -Gekijouban- is truly the finals chart D7 deserves.

IMPORTANT:

The D7 finals chart will be turned into a skill token at the end of the tournament. It is public for this one week only.
Scores will be wiped afterwards unless you qualify for the skill token requirement.

The requirement will be: AAA a difficulty 89 or higher file.
Simply stated, but unlocking this token will a true testament to FFR skill. Be sure to enjoy the file while it is public!

  1. Corn Was Here

  2. That D7 file

Please tell me that’s not staying in the game

  3. Hatsune Miku no Serioushitsu -Gekijouban-

  4. its replacing alice’s garden

  5. As worst file of the year? Probably.

  6. Blitz Lunar :D

  7. nice onion middie did you get it from a garage sale

  8. no alice’s garden was voted worst file of last year

  9. I got it from years of playing the game

  10. Which you know, you probably did as well

  11. I don’t think your opinion has any significant weightage if you don’t have much knowledge and understanding on patterns at that speed based on your skill level and your stepping knowledge – would appreciate it if you tone down the bashing

  12. Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu -Gekijouban- is truly the finals chart D7 shits on regardless because they legit are not human.*

  13. So jelly, I have no access to a computer for about 2 weeks so I won’t get to play this song, uggghhhhh

  14. you guys can replace the red arrow in the picture with an image of etienne’s face now

  15. “I don’t think your opinion has any significant weightage if you don’t have much knowledge and understanding on patterns at that speed based on your skill level and your stepping knowledge – would appreciate it if you tone down the bashing”

You want me to bash the file? That’s not bashing it. That’s simply saying I don’t wish to see it stay in the game in a crude manner. Which is an opinion, which is allowed as it does not break any site rules.

Also you don’t need to be D7 to judge hard files. That’s an ignorant load of trash. I also objectively have more know-how to make FFR files than you due to simply having more in game. So please tell me how yours matters more than mine other than through ignorance and personal bias? (Hint: You can’t.)

You have no right to trample my opinion for such nonsense.

  16. For the record my standards for being a good simfile artist are not the ones listed above. I might not like their files, but I can recognize Bmah, Dossar, Hi19 all as great simfile artists.

  17. CHARU

  18. I love how you always went about wishing all the hard files were tokens and we listen to you and make this a skill token and now you decide you don’t even want it in the game

  19. I’m kinda baffled with where to start on how stupid Middie’s post is. I mean by the logic that files in game = knowledge, Synthlight has way more knowledge of how to step files than you Middie. So using your argument, you’re objectively much more ignorant than a guy who made files in notepad 11 years ago. I feel like that line of thinking really sets you up to make a strong case as to why we should respect your opinion on simfiles.

  20. Also the fact that you’re still trying to establish yourself as an authority on exactly how D7 files should be stepped despite not being able to even read D7 files, much less having never made a decent file in that difficulty range yourself (or made a decent file at all, really) is pretty laughable.

  21. So my opinion, which is allowed as it does not break any site rules, is that you should really cut your losses before you get banned, again, for being rude as fuck.

  22. Gee, it’s really annoying spending so many hours on making a chart only to have somebody simply respond with “I hope this isn’t staying in the game.”

It’s not a valid criticism. It’s not even an opinion as you’re calling it, it’s just a big middle finger to me and doesn’t even extend the courtesy to tell me what the problem with it is. I try really hard and put more effort into stepping than I think you could wrap your head around, but please feel free to enlighten me as to where I’ve gone wrong.

I thought you were actually starting to change, but I can see there’s a reason you have this inescapable reputation as an absolute shitlord when it comes to having an “opinion” about simfiles.

  23. Also, D7 players’ opinions regarding high-difficulty songs do have more weight as they can read and play them proficiently. Whether they’ve created dozens of files or no files at all matters little since they’re not the ones creating the files.

  24. It’s like telling a professional food critic that they’re not entitled to an opinion because you’ve cooked for longer than him or her. No one cares about how much cooking experience you have, they care about how your food tastes

  25. It’s nice to know my opinion can just be discarded due to the opinion of someone else. That’s real solid. Good job staff, you guys picked fuckin’ winners.

  26. I’ll take my ban I don’t really deserve now.

  27. shoutouts to ad hominem

  28. ampersand

  29. We’ve reached Dead Sea levels of goddamn salt in here can we use it to salt Alice’s Garden so it never comes back.

  30. Middie you are of course entitled to your opinion, but that does not absolve you from dealing with the consequences. If you continually express opinions that have no factual basis, alienate everyone else, and needlessly antagonize people, then expect people to treat you as poorly as you treat them. Fundamentally I find you to be the biggest piece of trash this site has had to deal with since boogiebear, and accordingly, I belive the site would instantly be better off if you never visited again. How’s that for an opinion?

  31. so this is where the FFR Drama is at, thought it would be in the official tournament thread.

  32. this comment section is some SERIOUS SHIT.

  33. i’ll show myself out.

  34. Hi19 pretty much hit everything on the head with middie, but I’ll elaborate on this point:

“Also you don’t need to be D7 to judge hard files. That’s an ignorant load of trash.”

There are two stages to judging a file. Looking at it, and playing it. If you fail to understand this, then you will absolutely never be a top player, you will never be respected for your opinions, and you will never be a part of the community beyond “an annoying little shit-head with an ego.”

  35. this comment section is some SERIOUS SHIT.

  36. unlike eze you suck at the game xel and not being able to play a cart does not mean its bad lol owned

  37. Mad Cuz Bad Fallacy

  38. @Hi19 It’s not a secret really. I knew that already. Save for maybe the boogiebear part, I have heard of some of the nastier things though I haven’t seen directly though.

@Choof: Knowing how a lower player approaches the file is as good of information to have. You should blend your player pool so you have a wider sample. Having five D7 opinions and one D6 opinion isn’t that good of a pool to get information from. I mean what do you want only lower tiered players for easier files? No, you don’t. Do you want more D7 judges in this case? Yes. But it should probably be like half D7 half a blend of D5 and 6 in the case of a harder file. But this is mostly just speculation. But do you only want D7 level judges on the judge team? I can’t think of why. I’d argue you probably want a few from D4-6 as well.

  39. Blending player pool is great, but why would we ask for a d5 or d6 player to play a high level file that they probably wouldn’t be able to comprehend? Take Odd22 for instance. There were multiple passes on the file, because it was too hard. And to be honest, looking at that with as minimal bias as possible, that is a good thing. This is where we get judges telling simfile artists to “tone down patterns,” and even though there may seem to be an objective reason for saying so, it really boils down to “this is too hard, make it easier.”

Look at what happened with the D7 chart. It was AAA’d within the first day. We -need- higher level charts in the game, to challenge the highest level players, something that you are not.

I don’t think you understand what goes into judging a hard, technical, and good file, and because of this, you are fundamentally unable to understand what makes a hard, technical, and good file. This isn’t even subjective. By being at roughly the same skill level you’ve been at for multiple years, not only does that show how little you understand the mechanics behind making a noteworthy file, but it also shows that you really do not care about this game past the surface level. Hi19 is absolutely right, the site would be far better off without you, even if you simply stopped posting about files.

  40. nobody
    will
    notice
    this

  41. I see you blanky. ;)

also lol at the drama about that miku song. personally i dont like the song choice. the file is i dunno ok i guess? its something i can barely read lol.

  42. I have a lot to say about this, but I am at work and won’t be able to get it all out in one shot, but yeah…

    Essay abound soon.

  43. also, I would like to extend thanks to hi19/Nathan for making files internally specifically for the last round (D2, D5, D7) in addition to their already awesome queue’d files.

  44. Damn people be rude to xenlya, I agree about the part about having some d4,5,6,7 but only for files for their respective level and I think that is what you mean anyway. As stated, getting a d4 to judge a d7 file is pretty lol. I can barely play staple(barely been hanging on for my dear life) I can’t break it down and appreciate sections. I just see a wall and MASH MASH. Any opinion I have on hat file would be, it’s fucking hard.

The part about not needed to be D7 to judge a file unplayable they can’t even read was pretty stupid and guessing you realised that , maybe to a degree you are right but thr only person I would say has that kind of experience and who shows it is hihihi. Seeing as he’s made a bunch of them. Maybe there is a few others but I don’t really pay attention.

I think people could have got the point across without been so damn rude to you, even it you have a reputation for been a peen

  45. i don’t condone the attitude on either sides, but if we’re playing tit-for-tat, he 100% deserves it.

  46. lmaobruh.jpg

  47. yo where’s the SM Orbular noteskin for first place???

  48. i dont rlly think serious shit should be in ffr…all really fast jumpstream makes it feel like a sm file, and those patterns…

  49. I know etienne was good, but a aaa on an 97?? wow.

  50. lmao klimt please stop

  51. I thought all the tournament drama stayed in the Osu! World Cups.

  52. Also I didn’t know that version of Disappearance of Hatsune Miku existed until I looked it up. Huh, I really like it. Fitting final song.

  53. well then

  54. “i don’t condone the attitude on either sides, but if we’re playing tit-for-tat, he 100% deserves it.” Basically this. I’m not (usually) a huge dick but when you get baseless and rude comments on your creative work every single time for years, or see others have to deal with the same, even the nicest person is going to snap. Still not sure why we haven’t IP banned Middie, he’s made it clear that he is fundamentally an impolite and miserable person and has no intentions of ever changing.

  55. xelnya it’s gonna be a token song so it’s ok

  56. hey guys i have some hearts and i wanna share them. <3 <3 <3

  57. like

middie has sent files to a batch under a different username to test if there was no bias upon seeing his previous username “Xx{Midnight}xX” and has made countless attacks towards judges and stepartists

why do you people even give this type of shit-tier, temperamental person the privilege to post anywhere on the site? why hasn’t he been needing permission to post anywhere on the forums? it’s clear that he needs to be get rid of.

  58. Alrighty, then.

First off, Middie: no, the file is not being removed from the game; I am very proud to say that such a brutally technical file such as this one will remain in game unless the stepartist decides to remove it for any reason. The problem with you Middie, is that you’re not only closed-minded, but you have this ridiculous level of self-entitlement and narcissism; I don’t understand how you can, under any situation, put your opinion on such a high pedestal that it flirts with being matter-of-factly given that you’ve far from proven sufficient capability at simfiling. And don’t get me wrong, what I just said is incredibly blunt/rude, but as I said before: tit-for-tat. I actually gave this file some really serious analysis prior to tournament usage, and there were multiple iterations of the file put under reasonable scrutiny before this ended up as the final version. Without going into extremely thorough examination of the file, the structure is extremely clear and very forceful as it needed to be for the final.

A bit earlier in the tournament, when Purgatorium was put into game, bmah actually somewhat expressed some concern not towards the structure of the file, but rather the actual patterning of the file and how some of the patterns were intentionally laced with poor transitioning, and the best that I could tell him was simply to trust me. The skill curve/ceiling for D7 is so incredibly high anymore that the utilization of conventional patterning and structure simply leads to a file being wasted, and hell — as round 7 showed: even being extremely aggressive with patterning, transitions, and layering still leads to D7 absolutely shredding through files if there’s even a minute possibility. The fact of the matter is that experienced simfile artists now need to find ways to make brutally hard files using different methods than they did in the past, because anything that even looks doable probably is doable. The really scary thing about this tournament is that Purgatorium would have been round 7 had hi19hi19 not promised me that he would come through and provide something really challenging for a new round 7, and honestly, given how detailed the file is, I cannot possibly ask him or anyone to do better than he did under such extremely short notice. He actually gave me a number of options to choose from when I had nothing, and for that, I owe him big time.

This leads me to my next point, Middie: you are in absolutely no position to be judging files like the D7 beyond a simple “I hate this file” opinion, as you cannot reasonably justify objective errors within the chart. Any subjective issues you have with the file are very likely null and void given that very few players even the speed to handle a good majority of the patterns in this chart; this isn’t to say that you are not allowed to dislike the file, but to implicitly attack Nathan and call it the worst file of the year is absurd. It is really upsetting to hear that kind of statement in general, but hearing it from you is the ultimate icing on the case given that most of your files are hardly something to talk about. But, I digress.

Something that I feel needs to be explained to the community is that I normally dislike having to use so many really hard files in a tournament situation; when doing some brief number crunching, I came to the conclusion that roughly 2 out of every 3 of the files being used in a tournament setting are FMO range. Normally, I feel some regret. However, I am -really- happy with a lot of the higher level files that were used this tournament because there was a pretty wide range of diversity in the files in the 80+ difficulty range, and seeing players have to contend with so many different techniques was an absolute joy. I personally had a blast playing all of the D7 files in the tournament, and while I know that others might not be able to say they had a great time in the tournament (I still feel somewhat sorry for D4 getting battered with spike after spike), I know that a good majority of this roster was nicely split up with regards to song/chart structure. A lot of the same simfile artists were used, but what can you do? To say that I’m happy with a lot of the upper level files used in this tournament as a person who normally dislikes flooding the game with higher level files speaks volumes about how much I support my stepartists who worked their asses off to get a great file in the queue to potentially be used (externally/internally) in this tournament.

It absolutely chaps my ass to see someone bitching about an extremely hard file that is different in so many respects, and the fact that it comes from Middie… not just Middie as a user, but moreso as a user who has complained about the same shit with regards to simfiling over and over again with the impression that he’s the only one who can do right, complained that there was bias in the judgment system and submitted files under a different alias only to still receive the same rejections, fight with judges and their justified ratings and otherwise cause general unrest in the community with his “factual statements” is really just a testament to how little his opinion should matter.

  59. 10/10 would chap that ass again

  60. So, Middie, being that you’ve been well aware that literally the entire site hates you, what are you doing here still

  61. 8/8 FPP comments, would read again

  62. It’s becoming incredibly clear at this point that you only do this shit for attention anymore Austin. I really can’t see how you consistently follow this same argumentative pattern EVERY FUCKING FIGHT you’re in.

You start off by stating your opinion on a file as literal AIDS as only you can so taciturnly do, followed by everyone jumping on your case for you being rude as fuck to people (surprising, I know). When you’re brought into the spotlight again, you can never explain your reasoning other than “It’s my opinion so deal with it”. It’s this EXACT reason everyone dislikes you, not just because you’re being mean frownie face :CCC

Anytime anyone ever actually makes a valid point to one of your baseless statements (as Hi19 did with Synth files) all you do is respond by either 1) Attacking the person directly, 2) Fall back to your usual 5-year-old tactic of “well its my opinion and that’s your opinion so nyah” or 3) Go off on some other tangent when you know you’re wrong so people don’t keep coming back to it.

Maybe if you wanted people to stop flying off the handle at you everytime you do this shit (which I doubt you honestly care about anymore at this point, which is pretty pathetic) maybe you could have an actual, civilized fucking discussion with someone. You’ve never even stated any reasoning behind your opinion of Gekijouban as trash in the first place. I’m personally waiting for it.

  63. This is now a legendary thread.

  64. It’s really easy to dismiss Middie as “lel he troled u guys” but at a certain point it’s pathological, and damaging to the integrity of the site. I really don’t want to hesitate going into song discussion threads (as I sometimes do) because I just KNOW I’m going to have to deal with his shit. Just because it’s “harmless trolling” doesn’t mean it’s actually harmless- I think Middie forgets the people he’s talking to actually have feelings too, and I think “consistently displaying antagonizing sociopathic behavior” should be explicitly added into the site rules as a banworthy offense, to prevent this.

  65. Has anyone seen Charu? I think I missed him

  66. what is up with these legendary fpp comments and video comments

    /clap

  67. Isn’t making a “AAA a 89″ skill token basically the same as Unconnected’s requirement?

  68. It is not, at all — you can get put into D7 without AAAing an 89; this is essentially going to like other milestone tokens for other divisions of FFR (D3 = Heavy, D4 = Scarhand [S], D5 = Oni, D6 = Scarhand [H], D7 = Miku). Those that are of the D7 level cannot unlock Unconnected. if they a.) don’t sign up for the official tournament or b.) sign up for the official but have a round of inactivity where they could have performed.

  69. my best aaa is still my half and i’m d7 ayyy lmao

  70. my best aaa is still waiwai230 and i’m d7 fuck

  71. Mine is Turbo and i suck!

  72. business be serious

  73. cmon, turn Death Piano into the token and keep this in public. This is hard file that’s actually fun to try to score on and improve with.. /sad

  74. :(

  75. Yeah I’m sad too. This is a file that’s actually fun for people who can’t AAA 89+, as opposed to something like Staple on Smile. I wanted it the other way around but the GMs wanted super Scarhand token to be an “actually good song” which Staple clearly isn’t.

  76. Petition: “Save Miku” sign up pls

  77. “Isn’t making a “AAA a 89? skill token basically the same as Unconnected’s requirement?” na it’s harder. i got into d7 without aaa’ing any 89+ songs.

  78. “The requirement will be: AAA a difficulty 89 or higher file.” I stopped pushing myself after scarhand, thanks for the motivation FFR!

  79. @cornman: staple is an eargasm, how dare you have differing musical preferences! >:|

  80. well that just kinda exploded. good read would read again.

  81. so will everybody who has already AAA’d an 89 or higher get the ST? even if someone’s (i.e. mine) skill is already way below the capability of ever getting one again? huhu

  82. Middie what’s the matter?
Come to Tennessee and I will give you a hug! =]

  83. 2 days until the disappearance of hatsune miku

  84. lol

  85. lol

  86. lol

  87. “this token will a true testament to FFR skill.” testament?

  88. Xiz, what’s up mang? I’m here for u

  89. @klimtkiller: “testament” in the sense of “something that serves as a sign or evidence of a specified fact, event, or quality”

  90. Essentially, used in this way the word means something that shows tangible proof of accomplishment.

  91. Rawr files rawr! Anger!

  92. Congrats to Brandon, D7 Elite Keysmasher!

  93. When new SOTW?

  94. what’s a sotw?

  95. Songs of the Week
