Saying emo isn't a genre makes just as much sense as saying metal or punk or grunge aren't genres.

By the by, I checked out that Envy link. The music was all good until the guy started screaming. Honestly, the screaming is horrible and sounds completely off-key. I had to turn it off once he started screaming.

Honestly, I like death metal and whatnot. That's better screaming.

What does the Emo genre sound like? For some reason I can only imagine crying sounds.

SnS - Well done, you know, reading the thread and all.

Q: So I'm new to emo and have no idea where to start. What do I do?
          A: Listen to this song:

            :s I don't want to be brainwashed.

EDIT: Yeah I just saw that on the main page before I saw you post it. Gonna check it out.

EDIT2: I kind of like it. I've heard stuff like this before, didn't know it's classified as emo.

Re: A n00bies guide to emo and screamo music

Death Metal generally growls doesn't it?

This may sound really stupid but do screams usually go in a key?

Also, is there a way to delete threads? After TRD uploads his stuff I'm probably going to delete this thread for obvious reasons.

To SnS, I can hook you up with some stuff if you'd like.

Re: A n00bies guide to emo and screamo music

You can't delete threads, no. However you can ask a staff member to lock it and I'm sure they will.

If that's the case I'll probably give my uploaded file in a new thread for people to download and just reference this (with a link or whatnot).

Also, yes, death metal is generally growling more than screaming. Yes, it can also be done "in key". As in you aren't just screaming in a high whiny voice but are actually sounding good when you do it.

For reference: Mike Patton. He can scream / growl / sing / do opera. All in key.

                  EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPsXRiV6yo4

                  Mike Patton at his craziest.

                    No problem.

I'm actually not sure whether I should get this locked or not. Maybe I could ask the mods to just delete the spam/flame posts?

Death growling is basically the same thing as distorting the sound of a guitar in death metal. It wouldn't sound right to me for somebody to sing clean when you hear the distorsion of a death metal riff.

                        WTF .

I wonder if he actually wrote that all out.

He probably did. I've enjoyed almost all of his work. He's been in Faith No More (Rock), Mr Bungle (Avante-Garde), Fantomas (Extreme Avante-garde, we're talking albums that last around 40 minutes yet have 30+ songs), Tomahawk (Heavy Rock) and has worked with too many people to count. The most well known are probably Eyvind Kang (which was the Opera thing) and John Zorn (which is where that song in the youtube link comes from).

EDIT: I forgot he also collaborated with some guy called Kaada which resulted in an amazing album called "Romances". Sort of ambient / relaxing / avante-garde.

                          Also - 92.7%.

It finished uploading so you can check it out here: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...40#post2212140

Bumped rather than edited because you might miss it otherwise, which would be horrible of course.

Yeah screaming can go in key just like singing, you scream and sing from the same place.
